Two members of an inter-state gang of smugglers were arrested and 90 kg cannabis was recovered from them on Monday, police said."On credit input, police raided a house in Dumka and arrested two people from there. We have also taken into custody a car, a motorcycle, and a few SIM cards," said YS Ramesh, Superintendent of Police, Dumka.The police have registered a case under different Sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.Further investigation is currently underway.
At least 42 inmates were killed in clashes in four prisons in northern Brazil on Monday, authorities said, a day after violence in one of the jails left 15 people dead. At least 27 of the victims were in the Antonio Trindade Penal Institute near Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state, where all four prisons are located. The federal government said it was sending reinforcements to boost security in the state's prisons. Brazil has the world's third largest prison population, with 7,26,712 inmates as of June 2016, according to official statistics. The population is double the capacity of the nation's prisons, which in the same year was estimated to be 3,68,049 inmates. Along with severe overcrowding, Brazil's prisons are plagued by gang violence, while riots and breakout attempts are not uncommon.
A woman who attempted to commit suicide along with her husband here on Monday was saved by the police. Her husband, however, was found dead."A married couple, identified as Murli and Priyanka, attempted to commit suicide at their residence. After getting alerted by neighbours, two police personnel reached the spot and found the woman alive," said Mahesh Bhagwat, Police Commissioner Rachakonda.Constable Mahipal rushed the woman to the patrol van and saved her life, said Bhagwat appreciating the efforts of the two police personnel.
A man allegedly committed suicide in police custody in New Delhi's Bawana area.In the incident reported on Sunday, the deceased, identified as Balraj, was called for interrogation in connection with a murder case registered against his son."Balraj jumped off the balcony of Bawana police station when he had gone out on the pretext of drinking water. We have not found any foul play in the incident," police said.An enquiry has been ordered in the suicide case. A Hindu veterinary doctor was arrested on Monday after a local cleric filed a police complaint accusing him of committing blasphemy in Pakistan's southern Sindh province. The doctor, identified as Ramesh Kumar, was taken into custody while angry protestors set fire to shops owned by Hindus and burnt tyres on road in Phuladyon town in Mirpurkhas district in the province, media reports said. The head cleric of the local mosque, Maulvi Ishaq Nohri, filed the complaint with the police alleging that the doctor had torn pages of a holy book and wrapped medicines in them. Zahid Hussain Leghari, the Station House Officer of the local police station, said that a case was registered against the doctor. Leghari said a proper investigation would be carried out and the doctor had been taken to a safe location after the unrest broke out in the town. The Congress in Maharashtra Monday demanded immediate arrest of those responsible for driving a doctor in a civic-run hospital here to commit suicide allegedly by harassing her over her caste. Maharashtra Congress unit president Ashok Chavan said the doctor, Payal Tadvi, had repeatedly flagged the issue but her complaints were allegedly not taken note of. Tadvi, 26, killed herself on May 22. Her family has alleged that her doctor colleagues had taunted her for belonging to a scheduled tribe (ST). A 28-year-old married woman allegedly committed suicide at her residence in East Delhi's New Ashok Nagar on Monday, police said.The deceased, Ankita, was recently married to one Mukesh Pandey. A 53-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide here Monday along with her daughter by consuming poison, a police official said. Rambagh police station in-charge Mehar Singh said Santosh Sharma, a housewife, committed suicide along with her 28-year-old daughter Shilpa Sharma allegedly out of depression over some family dispute. "While Santosh Sharma died on the spot, Shilpa died while undergoing treatment in a hospital here," he said. The Haryana government has enhanced Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees, pensioners and family pensioners to 12 per cent from 9 per cent, with effect from January 1, 2019. The hike is estimated to cost state exchequer an extra Rs 17.70 crore per month approximately, Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu said here Monday. He said the burden during current financial year (2019-20) on the exchequer for 14 months from January 2019 to February 2020 would be Rs 247.80 crore. He said the state government has also enhanced DA by 6 per cent for state government employees, who continue to draw their pay in the pre-revised pay scale or grade as per the 6thPay Commission, from existing 148 per cent to 154 per cent of the basic pay, with effect from January 1, 2019. This DA enhancement would entail an extra financial liability of approximately Rs 63.55 lakh per month, he said. Delhi High Court on Monday deferred the hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Indian Premier League's (IPL) auction process.The plea which was filed by social activist Sudhir Sharma alleged that auctioning of players in the IPL is illegal and should be stopped.Cricket players are purchased and sold through bidding by corporate houses and the petition sought to scrap the auction process as that amount to illegal human trafficking and sale of human beings.
