DoT panel on scope of 5G trials, experimental spectrum submits report

A panel set up to recommend the scope of 5G trials in the country has submitted its report to the Department of Telecom (DoT), a source said. The DoT-constituted committee chaired by IIT Kanpur Director Abhay Karandikar was tasked to give recommendations on the scope of trials, as well as size, quantum, pricing and other aspects for offering experimental/trial spectrum for 5G and other trials. A DoT source privy to the development said that the report was submitted recently and is currently being examined, but did not divulge details. A section of industry has been of the view that existing validity period of licence for trials and experimentation is too short and should be increased. Some industry representatives had earlier informed the committee, during the past deliberations, that the various stages involved in the process of experimentation and trials such as import and release of equipment, logistic clearance, installation and commission of equipment, network integration, ...

Researchers develop sensors that can be woven into fabrics

Researchers have developed a shrinkable sensor that can be interlaced into clothes, a development which may pave the path for smart clothing, capable of monitoring human movement. The embedded microscopic sensor is able to recognize local motion through the stretching of the woven yarns that are treated with graphene nanoplatelets, which can read the body's activity, according to the study published in the Journal of Small."Microscopic sensors are changing the way we monitor machines and humans. Combining the shrinking of technology along with improved accuracy, the future is very bright in this area," said, lead researcher of the study, Mina Hoorfar. This 'shrinking technology' used a phenomenon called piezo-resistivity, an electromechanical response of a material when it is under strain. These tiny sensors have shown a great promise in detecting human movements and can be used for heart rate monitoring or temperature control, explained Hoorfar. The study showed the potential of a ...

Smart clothes that monitor human movement in the offing

Scientists have developed a low-cost, washable sensor that can be interlaced into textiles and composite materials, paving the way for smart clothing that can monitor human movement. The microscopic sensor, described in the journal 'Small', is able to recognise local motion through the stretching of the woven yarns that are treated with graphene nanoplatelets that can read the body's activity. "Microscopic sensors are changing the way we monitor machines and humans," said Professor Mina Hoorfar, from University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada. "Combining the shrinking of technology along with improved accuracy, the future is very bright in this area," said Hoorfar. This 'shrinking technology' uses a phenomenon called piezo-resistivity -- an electromechanical response of a material when it is under strain. Facebook bans Israeli firm over fake election posts

Facebook, facing criticism for enabling disruption of elections worldwide, said it was taking down hundreds of accounts linked to an Israeli political consultancy. The social media platform said it was banning the Israeli company, Archimedes Group, which on its website boasts of "winning campaigns worldwide". The US giant said Thursday it had removed 265 accounts on its Facebook and Instagram platforms, Facebook Pages, Groups and events "involved in coordinated inauthentic behaviour". The sites' activity focused on several African countries and on Latin America and Southeast Asia, and was intended to sway voters by peddling misinformation. The individuals behind the fake network tried to hide their identities but some of the activity linked back to Archimedes Group, which Facebook said had "repeatedly violated" its policies. "This organisation and all its subsidiaries are now banned from Facebook, and it has been issued a cease and desist letter," the US company's head of ...

Scientists confirm promise of silicon for quantum computing

For the first time, researchers have measured the accuracy of two-qubit logic operations in silicon, an advance that may help develop full-scale quantum processor. All quantum computations can be made up of one-qubit operations and two-qubit operations, which are the central building blocks of quantum computing. In 2015, researchers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia were the first to build a quantum logic gate in silicon, making calculations between two qubits of information possible. The advance cleared a crucial hurdle to making silicon quantum computers a reality, according to the study published in the journal Nature. "Fidelity (accuracy) is a critical parameter which determines how viable a qubit technology is -- you can only tap into the tremendous power of quantum computing if the qubit operations are near perfect, with only tiny errors allowed," said Professor Andrew Dzurak from UNSW. The team used a technique that can assess qubit accuracy across all ...
