New fish species discovered that can detect wavelengths

The deep sea is home to fish species that can detect various wavelengths in near-total darkness, discovered researchers. The deep sea is the largest habitat on Earth and yet one of the least explored due to its inaccessibility.According to the study published in the Journal of Science, many organisms have adapted to life in the near-total darkness of this inhospitable environment. For example, many fish have developed highly sensitive telescope eyes that allow them to detect the tiny amount of residual light that makes it to the depths of the ocean.A team of researchers led by Professor Walter Salzburger from the University of Basel recently analysed fish living in deep-sea habitat and discovered that certain deep-sea fish have expanded their rhodopsin genes.Researchers found not less than 38 copies of the gene, in addition to two other opsins of a different type. "This makes the darkness-dwelling silver spiny fin the vertebrate with the most photopigment genes by far," explained ...

Competition Comm probes Google for unfair biz ways regarding Android platform

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has started a probe against Google for alleged anti-competitive practices with respect to its popular Android platform for mobile phones, an official said Friday. The fair trade watchdog has been looking into the matter for sometime, especially after a European Commission ruling last year. The official said the regulator has started investigation into alleged abuse of Android platform and the issues are similar to those dealt with by the European Commission. A majority of smartphones in India are powered by the Android platform. Other mobile platforms include iOS (Apple), among others. The CCI starts probe into a matter only when there is prima-facie evidence of violation of competition rules. "Android has enabled millions of Indians to connect to the internet by making mobile devices more affordable. We look forward to working with the Competition Commission of India to demonstrate how Android has led to more competition and innovation, not .

As Zuckerberg visits, France threatens new rules on Facebook

France welcomed Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg on Friday with a threat of sweeping new regulation. With Facebook under fire on multiple fronts, Zuckerberg is in Paris to show that his social media giant is working hard to limit violent extremism and hate speech shared online. But a group of French regulators and experts who spent weeks inside Facebook facilities in Paris, Dublin and Barcelona say the company isn't working hard enough. Just before Zuckerberg met French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, the 10 officials released a report calling for laws allowing the government to investigate and fine social networks that don't take responsibility for the content that makes them money. The French government wants the legislation to serve as a model for Europe-wide management of social networks. Several countries have introduced similar legislation, some tougher than what France is proposing. To an average user, it seems like the problem is intractable. Mass shootings are live-streamed, ...

Novel method to detect, trace homemade bombs

A new method of detecting homemade explosives will help forensic experts trace where they came from, scientists said Friday. The approach, described in the journal Analytica Chimica Acta, uses ion chromatography -- high resolution mass spectrometry. Scientists at King's College London Northumbria University in the UK found that using this technique, they can detect a very large number of components of homemade explosives down to very low trace amounts. Homemade explosives are frequently used in a number of different crimes, including ATM robberies. They have traditionally been very challenging to detect and trace in samples submitted for forensic analysis. "The method we developed is less time consuming and represents a viable solution for challenging explosives like these," said Matteo Gallidabino from King's College London. "By combining this approach with advanced data analytics, added intelligence can be retrieved from any evidence recovered," Gallidabino said. "This has the ...

Gravitational waves leave detectable mark: Study

Gravitational waves -- ripples in the fabric of spacetime -- leave behind plenty of "memories" that could help detect them even after they have passed, according to a study. These waves, first detected in 2016, offer a new window on the universe, with the potential to tell us about everything from the time following the Big Bang to more recent events in galaxy centres. The billion-dollar Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detector watches 24/7 for gravitational waves to pass through the Earth. "That gravitational waves can leave permanent changes to a detector after the gravitational waves have passed is one of the rather unusual predictions of general relativity," said Alexander Grant, doctoral candidate at Cornell University in the US. Physicists have long known that gravitational waves leave a memory on the particles along their path, and have identified five such memories. The study, published in the journal Physical Review D, found three more aftereffects .

It's time to break up Facebook, says co-founder Chris Hughes

Mark Zuckerberg's power and staggering influence go far beyond "that of anyone else in the private sector or in government," opined Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, while calling for the government to break up the tech giant. In a lengthy opinion piece published by the New York Times on Thursday, Hughes -- who helped Zuckerberg transform Facebook from their dorm room back in 2004 to the social media giant it has transformed into -- is calling for stricter regulations against the company that holds a "powerful monopoly" in its domain."Mark's influence is staggering, far beyond that of anyone else in the private sector or in government. He controls three core communications platforms -- Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp -- that billions of people use every day. Facebook's board works more like an advisory committee than an overseer, because Mark controls around 60 per cent of voting shares." wrote Hughes. Break up Facebook, says company's co-founder

One of the co-founders of Facebook called on Thursday for the social media behemoth to be broken up, warning that the company's head, Mark Zuckerberg, had become far too powerful. "It's time to break up Facebook," said Chris Hughes, who along with Zuckerberg founded the online network in their dorm room while both were students at Harvard University in 2004. In an editorial published in The New York Times, Hughes said that Zuckerberg's "focus on growth led him to sacrifice security and civility for clicks," and warned that his global influence had become "staggering." Zuckerberg not only controls Facebook but also the widely used Instagram and WhatsApp platforms, and Hughes said that "Facebook's board works more like an advisory committee than an overseer." Hughes, who quit Facebook more than a decade ago, was pictured in the newspaper together with Zuckerberg when both were fresh-faced students launching Facebook as a campus networking tool. He accused Facebook of acquiring or ...
