Facebook hires high-ranking US State Department lawyer
Facebook has said that has hired a high-ranking US State Department lawyer credited with helping craft the controversial Patriot Act as the social network's new general counsel. Jennifer Newstead will replace Colin Stretch, who announced in July that he planned to leave Facebook. Newstead will oversee global legal functions at the California-based social network as it faces continued pressure from regulators regarding how well it safeguards user privacy and protects against the spread of misinformation or abuse on its platform. "Jennifer is a seasoned leader whose global perspective and experience will help us fulfill our mission," Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said in a statement on Monday. "We are also truly grateful to Colin for his dedicated leadership and wise counsel over the past nine years." Samsung delays launch of folding Galaxy smartphone
Samsung on Monday said it is delaying the launch of its folding smartphone after trouble with handsets sent to reviewers. Some reviewers who got their hands on the Galaxy Fold early reported problems with screens breaking. Samsung said it decided to put off this week's planned release of the Fold after some reviews "showed us how the device needs further improvements." The South Korean consumer electronics giant planned to announce a new release date for the Galaxy Fold in the coming weeks. Initial analysis of reported problems with Galaxy Fold screens showed they could be "associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge," Samsung said. There was also an instance where unspecified "substances" were found inside a Galaxy Fold smartphone with a troubled display, according to the company. Google Lens app to get new filters, translate option
Google Lens, an app that uses image recognition to identify objects and provide relevant information, is reportedly getting a few new features.These features, first spotted by 9to5 Google, include various filters for Lens, including Translate, Dining, and Shopping. The new features are aimed at reducing users' dependency on other apps as Google Lens attempts to become a one-stop solution for various search types.The Translate filter would allow Google Lens to translate foreign text into the designated language. The Shopping filter would allow it to identify clothing and furniture, while the Dining filter would likely allow users to point their smartphone camera at the real world to find restaurants highlighted in the viewfinder.

Researchers build new AI that could replace sushi chefs
Researchers are enhancing Artificial intelligence (AI) to aid in tasks earlier deemed challenging for robots to execute, such as preparing sushi rolls.Researchers at the Massachusetts Information of Technology (MIT) have developed a new particle simulator that can help robots grab delicate objects without damaging them by learning how different materials (particles) react to the touch.The new learning-based particle simulator system improves the ability of a robot to mold materials into simulated target shapes and interact with solid objects of liquids, MIT notes in its official blog.Potential applications of the system could allow industrial robots a refined touch. It could prove useful in personal robotics such as clay modelling or rolling sticky rice for sushi.
Tencent invests in app that teaches grannies how to dance
Tencent has reportedly invested in a dance learning app that is not aimed at teens for a change, but to middle-age and elderly users, most of whom are female.The app, called Tangdou, announced that it raised a Series C funding round led by Tencent with participation from other investors including Xiaomi founder Lei Jun's Shunwei Capital, GGV Capital, and IDG Capital, TechCrunch reported.The fresh infusion brings the total funds to nearly USD 100 million.Tangdou, founded four years ago, initially offered video tutorials to teach grannies and aunties how to dance, but soon it started offering news, networking, and other needs for the senior users. The app claims its users spend an average of 33 minutes on it every day.
YouTuber builds world's first pasta PC that works
What happens when your wife casually jokes about a PC made of pasta? You actually build it! This is what happened when YouTuber Micah Laplante, who runs the YouTube channel Laplanet Arts, did when his wife made the seemingly tasty joke.Laplante posted the video of the PC, aptly called The Lasagna PC V.1 (probably there will be more in the making since this is just the first version). The casing of the pasta PC is built entirely out of lasagna and rigatoni glued together.Laplante made the first-ever pasta PC in the world using the motherboard of his previously owned Asus Transformer tablet. The pasta PC is fully functional, but lags during video streaming or gaming owing to the old tablet it is built on.
Harisal dy Sarpanch takes on MNS chief
Deputy Sarpanch of Harisal village in Maharashtra Monday countered Raj Thackeray's claim of dysfunctional services at the first digital village by going live on Facebook. He accused the MNS chief of "maligning" the image of the village. The deputy Sarpanch Ganesh Yevale did a walk-through in a digital training laboratory which conducts some accounting courses in the village. "Raj Thackeray has maligned the image of Harisal. Thackeray brought people from outside and showcased (them) in his rallies to further dent this image," alleged Yevale. He also conducted a couple of short interviews of the students learning in the lab, who maintained that they have been getting good internet connectivity for more than six months. Addressing a rally in Solapur recently, Thackeray had called a man from the village on stage, who had acted in the "Me Labharthi" advertisement of the state government, and alleged that the government's claims of the digital village were false. Jio fastest with 22.2 mbps download speed in Mar, Voda leads in upload: Trai
Reliance Jio emerged as the fastest mobile network in March with an average download speed of 22.2 megabit per second while Vodafone led the chart in terms of upload speed, according to Trai data. Bharti Airtel trailed Jio with less than half of download speed at 9.3 mbps. While Vodafone and Idea Cellular have merged their mobile business, Trai measured their network performances separately. The network performance of Vodafone improved slightly to an average download speed of 7 mbps in March from 6.8 mbps at February end while Idea recorded a marginal dip in download speed to 5.6 mbps. Vodafone maintained its top spot in terms of upload speed after pipping Idea in January. It recorded an upload speed of 7 mbps. Idea followed Vodafone with an upload speed of 5.5 mbps. Jio recorded average upload speed of 4.6 mbps and Airtel 3.6 mbps at the end of March. Trai vows action against cable TV, DTH cos violating new norms
Telecom regulator Trai Monday warned it will come down heavily on cable TV and DTH players who are found to be violating its new tariff order and regulatory regime. The watchdog also promised to shortly begin "audit" of subscriber management and other IT systems of errant operators. Trai Chairman R S Sharma said consumer choice and consumer interest are "non negotiable" and "cannot be compromised" and that companies not adhering to rules will have to face the consequences. "We have received complaints about inconvenience to customers. These complaints relate to software and systems put in place by distributors not enabling true choice for consumers, which is the aim of the whole framework," Sharma told PTI.
