18 die in rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh in 2 days, says govt

As many as 18 people died in rain-related incidents and after falling into a borewell in Uttar Pradesh in the last two days, the state government said in a statement here on Saturday. Five people died due to heavy rains. This includes two in Muzaffarnagar, and one each in Fatehpur, Aligarh and Gorakhpur, it said. Seven people died after being struck by lightning. This includes three in Prayagraj, and one each in Chandauli, Sitapur, Aligarh and Hardoi. One person each died in Fatehpur, Agra and Amethi due to drowning, the statement said. While two people died in Mathura after falling into a borewell, one person died in Sultanpur due to a snakebite, it said. According to the directions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the kin of the deceased have been given financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh, the statement said. Lumpy disease: UP bans cattle trade with 4 states; limits animal movement

The Uttar Pradesh government has banned cattle trade with four neighbouring states and also imposed a "lockdown" on the intrastate movement of animals from 28 districts to prevent the spread of lumpy skin disease, Animal Husbandry Minister Dharampal Singh said Friday. He said the lumpy skin disease has spread to animals in 14 states of the country and it is "fatal to animals like coronavirus" is to human. The viral disease entered Uttar Pradesh through states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi, the minister told the fifth day of the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Assembly. "In view of this, the import of animals has been banned by sealing the interstate borders for cattle movement," he said. Samajwadi Party boycotts UP assembly session, protests on varied issues

Main opposition Samajwadi Party on Friday boycotted the assembly session and staged a protest alleging the government failed to discuss raging issues of inflation and unemployment in the House. Lucknow Bench sentences Mukhtar Ansari five-year jail in Gangster Act case

The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on Friday sentenced former MLA Mukhtar Ansari to five-year imprisonment in a 23-year-old case related to the Gangster Act. Justice D K Singh passed the order overturning the acquittal by a special MP-MLA court in 2020. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Ansari. State counsel Rao Narendra Singh said the FIR was lodged with the Lucknow's Hazratganj police in 1999 and a special court had acquitted Ansari in 2020. The state had filed an appeal against acquittal in 2021. The High Court on Friday allowed the state government's appeal and sentenced Ansari to five years in jail, he said. BJP spent over Rs 340 cr on poll campaigns in five states, maximum in UP

The Bharatiya Janata Party spent over Rs 340 crore in the assembly polls in five states held earlier this year, while the Congress shelled out more than Rs 194 crore for its campaigning in these states, according to the election expenditure reports of the two parties. Amid the ongoing protest by students against fee hike, Allahabad University Vice Chancellor Sangita Srivastava on Wednesday said their complaint was "misdirected" and promised to waive off the entire fee of those hailing from poor background and orphaned during Covid. The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court on Wednesday convicted former MLA Mukhtar Ansari and sentenced him to two years in prison for threatening a jailer and pointing a pistol at him. Justice DK Singh passed the order while allowing an appeal by the Uttar Pradesh government. The case dates to 2003 when Lucknow district prison jailer SK Awasthi lodged an FIR with Alambagh police alleging that he was threatened for ordering a search of the people who came to meet Ansari in prison. Awasthi also alleged that Ansari had pointed a pistol at him while abusing him. A trial court acquitted Ansari in this case, but the government filed an appeal. River cruise between Varanasi, Bogibeel to begin next year: Minister

India's "longest river cruise service" will begin early next year between Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Bogibeel in Assam, traversing a distance of more than 4,000 km, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Monday.
