HC puts in abeyance CCPA order against Flipkart for selling faulty cooker

The Delhi High Court on Friday put in abeyance an order of the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) asking online marketplace Flipkart to recall certain sold pressure cookers that allegedly did not meet quality standards. While directing that Flipkart's petition against the CCPA order be tagged along with a similar plea by e-commerce giant Amazon, Justice Yashwant Varma asked Flipkart to deposit the penalty of Rs 1 lakh imposed on it by CCPA and also notify the buyers of all the pressure cookers in question. The court sought CCPA's response to the plea by Flipkart and said the interim order which was passed in Amazon's case will also be extended the present matter. The petitioner is entitled to the interim relief (as granted to Amazon earlier) on identical terms, the court said. Amazon claims to sale of 1 mn unique products of SMBs, startup in 36 hrs

E-commerce firm Amazon on Friday claimed to have recorded sale of 10 lakh unique products offered by small and medium business, startups etc from its platform during the first 36 hours of festive season sale. The company's festive season sale "Great Indian Festival" started from September 22 as it gave early access to paid users. The company said that its Prime users, who are paid members, grew 1.9 times than last year and 68 per cent of the total new sign ups were from Tier 2 and 3 cities. "It is encouraging to witness small and medium businesses, startups, artisans, women entrepreneurs offer a wide selection of products to our customer across India. HC puts in abeyance CCPA order asking Amazon to recall pressure cookers

The Delhi High Court Tuesday kept in abeyance an order of the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) asking US-based e-commerce giant Amazon to recall sold domestic pressure cookers that did not meet quality standards. The high court, however, asked Amazon to deposit within a week Rs one lakh penalty imposed on Amazon by CCPA for selling cookers, which violate mandatory standards, on its platform. Justice Yashwant Varma said Amazon shall be liable to notify buyers of all these 2,265 pressure cookers that these items do not meet the required quality standards. The high court said the issues raised in the petition require consideration and till the next date of hearing, while the petitioner (Amazon) shall be liable to notify buyers of 2,265 pressure cookers, the CCPA order on recall of products and reimbursement of prices to buyers is placed in abeyance.
