Bihar: RJD leader Kartik Kumar's portfolio changed amid criminal case row

In a significant development, RJD's Kartik Kumar, who was given the law portfolio earlier in the month, was shifted to the sugarcane department amid the ongoing row over his alleged involvement in a criminal case. Shamim Ahmad, also an RJD leader, replaced Kumar as the law minister, a notification issued by the state Cabinet Secretariat Department said. Ahmad held the sugarcane portfolio before his elevation. The opposition BJP had been demanding Kumar's removal from the cabinet, alleging that an arrest warrant was pending against him in a 2014 kidnapping case. The Congress and CPI-ML (Liberation), constituents of the ruling Grand Alliance, had also asked the Nitish Kumar government to reconsider the decision of inducting Kartik Kumar into the cabinet.

Sushil Modi demands Surendra Prasad Yadav's removal from Nitish's cabinet

Senior BJP leader, Sushil Kumar Modi, on Sunday demanded the removal of Bihar Co-operative minister, Surendra Prasad Yadav, from the Nitish Kumar Cabinet for his alleged involvement in criminal cases. Modi, a former deputy chief minister of Bihar, had recently demanded the resignation of state Agriculture minister Sudhakar Singh for his alleged involvement in the rice scam. Talking to media persons here on Sunday, Modi, said, Yadav, an accused in a case registered on June 15, 2018, under the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, must be dismissed from the Nitish Kumar cabinet. Yadav, an RJD MLA, was recently charge-sheeted by a Pocso court for revealing the identity of a gang rape victim, he alleged. A person like Yadav, who is anti-woman, does not deserve to be a minister at all, said the BJP Rajya Sabha member. CPI asks Bihar govt to use bulldozers against BJP leaders in state

The Communist Party of India on Friday asked the 'Mahagathbandhan' government in Bihar, which it is supporting from outside, to use bulldozers against leaders of the BJP in the state. CPI national secretary Atul Anjan also demanded that a "white paper" on the "ill-gotten" wealth of BJP leaders in the state be brought out to debunk the notion that "only other parties are corrupt". "Let (CM) Nitish Kumar and (deputy CM) Tejashwi Prasad Yadav instruct officials concerned to identify and raze structures belonging to BJP leaders which are found to be encroaching upon public land. Bulldozers should now be used against the party", he told reporters. "If Nitish and Tejashwi baulk, we will take it as a lack of moral courage (naitik saahas) on their part," said Anjan. The CPI leader said his party was still open to joining the cabinet in the state, unlike other Left parties - the CPI(ML) and CPI(M) which have ruled out such a possibility. "But we have received no offer so far. And we do no

Deputy CM Tejashwi is 'fake' Yadav, Nityanand Rai is real, says Bihar BJP

The BJP in Bihar on Thursday alleged that Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav was a "fake", who belonged to a family of "shepherds" but claimed to be a descendant of Lord Krishna's clan. State BJP spokesman and OBC Morcha national general secretary Nikhil Anand came out with a stinging statement against the young RJD leader in response to a press conference held by the latter. In the press meet, Yadav had fulminated against "a Union minister, who was dreaming of becoming the CM and planning a game (khela') in Bihar". Though Yadav had not named anybody, Anand took the bait, saying "Nityanand Rai (MoS for Home) is a real Yadav as he belongs to a family of cowherds and is, therefore, a descendant of Lord Krishna. Tejashwi is farji' (fake) as he belongs to a community of shepherds". It has been widely speculated that were the BJP to win power in Bihar, it might back Rai as the chief minister in a bid to win over the Yadavs, the most populous and politically assertive caste grou

Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi comes out with code of conduct for RJD ministers

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav on Saturday came out with a list of directives for cabinet colleagues belonging to the RJD, in an obvious attempt at image makeover for his party. The RJD heir apparent issued the commandments on his official Twitter handle, whereby party ministers have been forbidden from purchasing new cars and also from allowing visitors to touch feet. Greetings should be exchanged with namaste or aadab, said Yadav, whose party is facing the heat over criminal cases pending against many ministers. He further asked ministers to conduct themselves with dignity and humility and give priority to helping the poor irrespective of their religion and caste. Please also promote exchange of books or pens in place of bouquets, added the leader who now seems intent on projecting a more mature image of himself. In an apparent bid to restrain RJD members from gloating over their party being the largest partner, he used the term under the leadership of honoura
