Hyperlocal emissions behind spike in Delhi's air pollution after Dussehra

Delhi's air quality turned poor on Dussehra, though the early warning system of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology had predicted moderate to satisfactory air quality in the capital. IITM officials said that they did not record any substantial changes in parameters like temperature, wind speed and emissions from farm fires on October 5 and "hyperlocal emissions" could have impacted the air quality. The possible sources of these emissions could be the large number of effigies burnt on the occasion of Dussehra and during a political protest, they said. With the air quality in Delhi dropping to the 'poor' category on Wednesday, authorities in the National Capital Region (NCR) have been asked to strictly implement measures under "Stage 1" of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) which include penal and legal action against polluting industrial units. Delhi records 57 new Covid-19 cases, positivity rate at 2.19%, shows data

Delhi on Thursday reported 57 new Covid cases with a positivity rate of 2.19 per cent, according to the data issued by the city health department here. No Covid-related fatality was reported, the department said in its latest bulletin. With the new cases, Delhi's COVID-19 tally has climbed to 20,03,803 while the death toll remains unchanged at 26,503, it said. The new cases were detected from 2,606 tests conducted the previous day, it said. Delhi on Wednesday saw 96 Covid cases with a positivity rate of 1.42 per cent. The capital logged 74 Covid cases with a positivity rate of 1.07 per cent on Tuesday. On Monday, it reported one Covid-related fatality and 39 new cases with a positivity rate of 1.56 per cent. The city on Sunday logged 76 cases with a positivity rate of 1.12 per cent. On Saturday, it saw 92 COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 1.20 per cent, while it recorded 87 infections with a positivity rate of 1.19 per cent, and one fatality due to it on Friday. Delhiites woke up to a pleasant windy and cloudy morning on Thursday as the weather office predicted light rain and thundershowers during the day. Rains are likely to further improve the air quality index (AQI) which according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data was in the moderate category with index value measured at 134 at 8 am on Thursday. According to CPCB's 24 hour AQI bulletin at 4 pm on Wednesday, the air quality was in the poor category with index value at 211. Technical snag affects service on Delhi Metro's Blue line: DMRC Officials

Services have been affected on the Delhi Metro's Blue line on Wednesday due to a technical snag, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials said. "Blue Line Update: Delay in services from Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida Electronic City/Vaishali. Normal service on all other lines," the DMRC tweeted around 7.15 am to alert commuters. The metro services on the line have been affected due to a technical glitch, sources at DMRC said. The Blue line of the Delhi Metro connects Dwarka Sector 21 in Delhi with Noida Electronic City, and also branches off to Vaishali from Yamuna Bank station.

Cloudy weather in Delhi; rain in next 4-5 days to keep temp normal

Cloudy weather and a few sporadic spells of light rain are predicted in Delhi on Wednesday and the next four to five days, which will keep the air clean and temperatures within comfortable levels in the national capital. The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, recorded a minimum temperature of 23.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday morning. The Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday burnt effigies of Ravana at about 3,500 locations here in a symbolic protest against the BJP's "failure" in maintaining cleanliness in the capital. However, the effigies burnt by party leaders and workers were not made of garbage as announced by AAP's MCD poll incharge Dugesh Pathak on Monday. 'Ravana made of BJP's garbage' was written on all the effigies burnt during the protest, the party said. The party changed its plan to burn Ravana's effigies made of garbage in view of the ban on their open burning in the capital, according to party sources. Delhi's GST collection in second quarter of FY23 dips by more than 6%

Delhi's Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection in the second quarter of 2022-23 dipped by more than 6 per cent as compared to the first quarter of the fiscal, according to official figures. However, the combined GST collection of the first two quarters of 2022-23 was 28 per cent higher than the corresponding period of financial year 2021-22, showing that the economic situation is recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials said. The GST collection in the third quarter (October-December) is expected to be higher with a spur in trade and business during the festive season, they added. The GST collection of Rs 14,297 crore in the first quarter (April-June) was Rs 880 crore more than the Rs 13,417 crore collected in July-September. According to the officials, the Delhi government collected Rs 5,871 crore from GST in April, Rs 4,113 crore in May, Rs 4,313 in June, Rs 4,327 crore in July, Rs 4,349 crore in August and Rs 4,741 crore in September. Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his ministers of showing "utter disregard" towards the commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi and former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries on October 2. In a letter, the LG said neither Kejriwal nor his ministers were present at Raj Ghat and Vijay Ghat, memorials to Gandhi and Shastri, even as President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and representatives of foreign missions in India among others were there to pay homage. The LG noted that Kejriwal's deputy Manish Sisodia was "perfunctorily present" there for a few minutes, but "did not deem the occasion fit enough to stay the course". Delhi Police registers case against PFI under UAPA in Shaheen Bagh

Delhi Police has registered an FIR against the banned outfit Popular Front of India under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in southeast Delhi's Shaheen Bagh area, an official said on Monday. The government has imposed a ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI) and its associates -- Rehab India Foundation (RIF), All India Imams Council (AllC), National Confederation of Human Rights Organisation (NCHRO) and other organisations as unlawful associations for its alleged terror activities. The development also comes after Delhi Police's Special Cell unit along with district police conducted raids across six districts in the city last week and nabbed 30 people allegedly linked with PFI.
