Delhi's air quality turned poor on Dussehra, though the early warning system of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology had predicted moderate to satisfactory air quality in the capital. IITM officials said that they did not record any substantial changes in parameters like temperature, wind speed and emissions from farm fires on October 5 and "hyperlocal emissions" could have impacted the air quality. The possible sources of these emissions could be the large number of effigies burnt on the occasion of Dussehra and during a political protest, they said. With the air quality in Delhi dropping to the 'poor' category on Wednesday, authorities in the National Capital Region (NCR) have been asked to strictly implement measures under "Stage 1" of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) which include penal and legal action against polluting industrial units. The Centre's sub-committee on GRAP noted in a meeting that there has been a "sudden dip" in air quality parameters in the regio

With his government at loggerheads with Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena over multiple issues, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said even his wife does not "scold" him as much as the LG. The AAP supremo, tongue firmly in cheek, said in a tweet he has not received as many "love letters" from his wife "in the entire life" as he has from the LG in just six months. "LG sahib, chill a bit!" Kejriwal said in his tweet in Hindi. "And ask your super boss also to chill a bit." Kejriwal's remarks came days after Saxena in a letter accused the chief minister and his ministerial colleagues of showing "utter disregard" towards the commemoration of the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri by not attending events at Raj Ghat and Vijay Ghat. Saxena had termed their absence "unacceptable" and "appalling", saying such events call for "commemoration of much beyond the issuing of symbolic advertisements in newspapers that your government ver
The AAP on Thursday asked Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena why he has not yet ordered a probe into alleged toll tax scam worth Rs 6,000 crore even though Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia sent him a complaint in this connection with documents" two months ago. Addressing a press conference here, AAP's Delhi civic body election in-charge Durgesh Pathak also wondered if Saxena was not able to "muster courage" to order a probe into the alleged scam as some very senior leader of the BJP was involved in it. There was no immediate reaction from the LG office to the AAP's charge. It's been about two months since Deputy CM Manish Sisodia sent a letter to the LG, along with documents, asking for a probe into the scam. Leave aside ordering a probe, LG has not even sent an acknowledgment of Sisodia's letter so far, Pathak said. He said Lieutenant Governor Saxena has ordered several probes against the AAP government in Delhi so far since he assumed charge and authorities investigating th

Effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhakarna went up in flames at various places in the national capital during Ramlila celebrations, which were held with great pomp and show and without Covid restrictions on Wednesday. The festivities were low key events in the last two years due to COVID-19. The Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday burnt effigies of Ravana at about 3,500 locations here in a symbolic protest against the BJP's "failure" in maintaining cleanliness in the capital. However, the effigies burnt by party leaders and workers were not made of garbage as announced by AAP's MCD poll incharge Dugesh Pathak on Monday. 'Ravana made of BJP's garbage' was written on all the effigies burnt during the protest, the party said. The party changed its plan to burn Ravana's effigies made of garbage in view of the ban on their open burning in the capital, according to party sources. All three erstwhile municipal corporations were ruled by the BJP till they were unified and renamed as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in May. "We got the feedback yesterday itself. That's why smaller effigies were used for a symbolic protest with a writing on them 'BJP Ke Koode Ka Ravan' so that they do not cause air pollution," a source in the party said. In a statement, the AAP said party leade
