Tight security arrangements will remain in place at Turkman Gate in central Delhi after a court-ordered anti-encroachment drive triggered clashes and stone pelting in the area early Wednesday, police said on Thursday. Adequate deployment of police personnel and paramilitary forces has been made to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident, they said. Gulfisha Fatima, one of the accused in the 2020 northeast Delhi riots conspiracy case, walked out of Tihar Jail on Wednesday, hours after a Delhi court issued her release orders following bail from the Supreme Court, jail sources said. The remaining three accused, for whom the release orders were issued early Wednesday, are also expected to be freed once all procedural formalities are completed. Earlier in the day, a Delhi court issued release orders for the four accused after they furnished bail bonds of Rs 2 lakh each with two local sureties, as directed by the Supreme Court. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) presented a surplus budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year on Wednesday, forecasting a net surplus of Rs 143.05 crore. During the announcement, the council also revealed plans to install 2,000 CCTVs throughout Lutyens Delhi, while confirming that property tax rates will remain unchanged. Presenting the budget at a special council meeting, NDMC Chairman Keshav Chandra said that for 2026-27, it has projected total receipts of Rs 5,953.07 crore and total expenditure of Rs 5,810.02 crore, maintaining its trend of surplus budgeting. Chandra stated that the budget also outlines plans for over 2,000 additional CCTV cameras under the Safe City project. At least five police personnel were injured after some people allegedly pelted stones and glass bottles at the police during the demolition drive carried out on the land adjoining the Syed Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque and a nearby graveyard. The winter tightened its hold across North India on Tuesday with snowfall in hilly states and lowering temperatures across northern India, including the national capital which recorded its first cold day of the year. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted more light rainfall or snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Delhi saw a marginal respite in air quality on Monday as the 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) improved to 244, in the poor' category, after lingering in the very poor' range a day earlier. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board's Sameer app showed that four stations recorded very poor' air quality, with Chandni Chowk logging the worst AQI at 321, while 25 stations remained in the poor' category and nine recorded moderate' air quality. According to the CPCB classification, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered good', 51 to 100 satisfactory', 101 to 200 moderate', 201 to 300 poor', 301 to 400 very poor' and 401 to 500 severe'. A Delhi court on Saturday remanded Dr Bilal Naseer Malla, one of the accused in the November 10 Red Fort blast case, to judicial custody for 13 days till January 16. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) produced Malla at the Patiala House Court amid tight security on Saturday, upon the expiry of his 8-day NIA custody granted on December 26. Mediapersons were barred from covering the proceedings. The accused was produced before Principal District and Sessions Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna, who sent Malla to judicial custody till January 16. NIA arrested Malla in Delhi on December 9 and termed him a key accused in the conspiracy. The cooperatives-backed ride-hailing service Bharat Taxi will be officially launched in Delhi and other cities by the end of January, following an encouraging response during its soft launch, a senior cooperation ministry official said on Thursday. The digital platform, operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Ltd, was introduced in the capital on a pilot basis on December 2, 2024. "We have received a very good response for the Bharat Taxi service during the soft launch. The official launch will be done by month-end," Panjak Kumar Bansal, Additional Secretary in the Cooperation Ministry, told PTI. The service has been recording an average of 5,500 rides daily, including 4,000 from the airport and 1,500 from other locations across cab, auto and bike categories, Bansal said.
