'Fani' may bring light to moderate rains to north TN: Met dept

Light to moderate rainfall is expected in northern parts of Tamil Nadu under the influence of Cyclone 'Fani' which is presently lying over southwest Bay of Bengal, Area Cyclone Warning Centre Director S Balachandran said Tuesday. "Kumarikadal, Mannarvalaikuda and northern parts of the state would be receiving strong winds with speed ranging between 30 and 50 km per hour today," he said. Balachandran said the cyclone has intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm. It would continue to intensify and travel in northwest direction and gradually pass Odisha on May 3 in north and northeast direction, he said. According to the India Meteorological Department, 'Fani' is likely to intensify into an 'extremely severe cyclonic storm' by late Tuesday night and can hit the Odisha coast by Friday afternoon. Fishermen, Balachandran said, are advised not to venture into southwest Bay of Bengal on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Fire breaks out at Shastri Bhawan, 7 fire tenders rushed to spot

A fire broke out at Delhi's Shastri Bhawan on Tuesday afternoon. The fire was immediately doused.The fire fighting department swung into the action and at least seven fire tenders were deployed at the spot to put the blaze out.There were no casualties reported. Lucknow: Ammonia gas leaked in oil mill, no casualties reported

Ammonia gas leaked in an oil mill in Haiderganj area here on Tuesday after a pipe burst open."There was ammonia gas leakage after a pipe burst. It was contained immediately. Agartala-Bangalore Hum Safar Express derailed, none hurt

The 12504 Agartala-Bangalore Hum Safar Express derailed between Churaibari and Kalkalighat stations under Lumding division of Northeast Frontier Railway in Assam along Tripura on Tuesday, an NFR press release said here. There was no causality in the incident, said the release issued by NFR chief public relations officer Pranav Jyoti Sharma. Two wheels of the front trolley of engine got derailed at a location about 26 kms away from Karimganj station at 7.52 AM, the CPRO said. The train was pulled back by a relief engine to Churaibari station in the Assam-Tripura border and passengers were provided with all necessary assistance, Sharma said. Cyclone 'Fani' likely to hit Odisha coast by Friday: Official

Severe cyclonic storm 'Fani' itensified into a very severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday, and is likely hit the Odisha coast between Puri and Kendrapara by Friday, a senior official said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is yet to specify the exact location of landfall. However, in its 12 pm bulletin, the Cyclone Warning Division of the IMD said Fani lays over southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, about 830 km nearly south of Puri, 670 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and about 680 km northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka). "The IMD module indicates that cylone Fani is expected to make a landfall somewhere between Satapada or Chandrabhaga in Puri district and Gupti in Kendrapara late on May 3," Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) B P Sethi said. Cyclone Fani: Odisha CM approaches ECI, wants polls to be postponed

Centre orders release of Rs 1,086 cr to 4 states as advance assistance for cyclone 'Fani'

The Centre Tuesday ordered release of Rs 1,086 crore to four states as advance financial assistance for undertaking preventive and relief measures to deal with cyclone 'Fani', which is approaching the Indian coast. Following a decision of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), the Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered for advance release of financial assistance of Rs 1,086 crore to the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) of four states , an official statement said. Of the sanctioned amount, Odisha will receive Rs 340.87 crore, Tamil Nadu Rs 309.37 crore, West Bengal Rs 235.50 crore and Andhra Pradesh will get Rs 200.25 crore. The move has been made to assist the states for undertaking preventive and relief measures in response to cyclonic storm 'Fani'. The NCMC is the country's top body to deal with emergency situations. 4 killed, several injured in bus-truck crash in Serbia

Police say at least four people have been killed and several injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in southern Serbia. The crash happened early Tuesday near the town of Kursumlija. Police say the bus veered directly into the path of the truck on a local road. State TV says the bus carrying eight passengers caught fire after the accident. Three charred bodies were found inside the bus while the fourth victim is believed to be the truck driver. Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

China launches 2 satellites for 'scientific' pursuits

Eastern Naval Command all geared up for cyclone 'Fani'

Cyclone Kenneth: Death toll mounts to 38
