Heatwave leads to water crisis in Coimbatore

Water bodies have gone dry and groundwater levels have plummeted as unprecedented heatwave conditions persist in Coimbatore.Locals also blame repeated monsoon failure for the condition in the city."We have been witnessing monsoon failure for the past three seasons, we urge the government to clean all ponds, tanks and construct more check dams to save water during rains," Abdul Jaffar, a local resident told ANI.Environmentalist Syed said that this was the worst crisis the city had witnessed and that people were eagerly waiting for the south-west monsoons to provide some relief."With the monsoons hitting Kerala it is high time the Public Works Department (PWD) begins cleaning the tanks and also clear encroachments on the water paths reaching various water bodies," said Syed.Due to the heatwave in Coimbatore, more than 10 out of 20 tanks around the city have become dry. Massive fire breaks out in eastern London

A massive fire broke out at a block of luxury flats in eastern London on Sunday.Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters are currently at the scene of the incident to douse the blaze, said London Fire Brigade (LFB).There have been no reports of any casualties or injuries yet. The cause of the fire is not yet known.The blaze took hold from the ground to the sixth floor of the building situated in De Pass Gardens, Barking, at around 3:30 pm (local time).Further details into the matter are awaited.

Due to poor weather conditions, search operations to locate the missing AN-32 aircraft by aerial platforms were severely hampered on Sunday."IAF committed to searching for the missing AN32: The search for the aircraft continues. Today the weather in the area was poor thus, hampering by aerial platforms. Helicopters and transport aircraft carried out very limited operations due to low clouds and rain," the IAF said in a tweet."Ground teams have continued the search in full force. One killed in explosion at NLC plant in TN

One person was killed and two others seriously injured in an explosion at a thermal power unit of Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) here Sunday, police said. The NLC worker identified as Velmurugan of Periyakapankulam died after the safety valve of the second thermal power unit exploded, they said. The injured have been admitted to the Neyveli government hospital, they added. A case has been registered and investigation is on.

One dead, five injured in road accident in Mumbai

At least one person died while five others were injured when a car rammed over the people standing at a bus stand in Sewri area on Sunday.The deceased has been identified as Darpan Dipak Patil (18).All five injured -- Kalpesh Prakash Gharse (25), Swati Dipak Patil (40), Nidhi Dipak Patil (12), Gauri Mahesh Nandavkar (40), and Jay Mahesh Mandavkar (13) -- were admitted to the nearby KEM hospital.The driver Shahbaz and his wife were also injured in the accident.Police took Shahbaz Iliyas in its custody. Aerial search for missing AN-32 stalled for second day Sunday

Aerial search operation to trace a missing transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force could not be undertaken for the second consecutive day on Sunday due to bad weather in remote Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh. However, ground troops continued their search for the missing aircraft in the mountainous area for the seventh consecutive day. "No search and rescue operation could take place on Sunday due to bad weather and low clouds," a Shillong-based spokesperson of the Indian Air Force said. He said a fleet of helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicle and C-130J aircraft had taken to the skies but they landed back due to rain and poor weather. The aerial search operation could not take place on Saturday as well. J-K announces Rs 2 lakh compensation for each of 9 killed in Ladakh road mishap

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik Sunday announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of nine persons killed in a road accident in Ladakh region of the state. Nine labourers from Rajasthan were killed in the accident after a truck they were travelling in plunged into a deep gorge at Lamayuru in Leh district on Saturday. An official spokesperson sad, the governor has conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families and wished speedy recovery to the injured. The governor has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 20,000 each to those injured in the accident, he said.

Another victim found from Hungary tourist boat disaster

Another victim of the sinking of a sightseeing boat in Budapest has been found, Hungarian police said Sunday, bringing the death toll to 20 with eight people still missing. The woman's body was "pulled from the Danube near Szazhalombatta" on Saturday, around 21 kilometres (13 miles) south of Budapest, police said in a statement. She was identified as one of the South Koreans missing after the accident. The Mermaid tourist boat was carrying mostly South Korean tourists when it sank seconds after colliding with the bigger Viking Sigyn vessel on a busy stretch of the Danube river on May 29. "The authorities continue the search for seven missing South Korean passengers and the Hungarian captain of the boat on the whole southern section of the Danube," police said. Pre-monsoon showers experienced in some parts of Maha

Pre-monsoon showers hit hilly regions of Maharashtra's Satara district Sunday slowing down traffic on National Highway 4 connecting Mumbai to Bengaluru, officials said. IMD officials said some parts of Aurangabad and Jalna received showers accompanied by thunderstorms in the evening, adding that Pune, especially Baramati and Indapur towns, also experienced rain and lightning. They said Shirdi in Ahmednagar district received heavy showers along with gusty winds and lightning. The pre-monsoon showers led to power outages in some parts of the state, they added.

Mumbai: Two including an 11-year-old boy die of drowning

Two people including an 11-year-old boy died after drowning at two separate places in the city on Sunday.The first incident was reported at around 2:30 pm when a man drowned in the sea at Juhu Silver Bridge (Godrej Chowpati), near Iskon temple, Juhu, Andheri (West).The second incident occurred near the marine beach where a boy drowned in the sea, at Sundar Mahal junction at around 3:15 pm. The boy was identified as Bhairava Ramesh Bariya and was declared dead after he was brought to the hospital.

The Himalayan Adventure Rescue team rescued two Israeli trekkers from the Manikarna valley in the hills of Rasol on Sunday.Himalayan rescue team member Chandrapal informed, "22-year-old Yorval Binder and 24-year-old Yalia Shalamo, hailing from Israel, had lost their way on the trek up the Manikarna valley."They were caught in a difficult spot before being rescued.The trekkers expressed their gratitude to the rescue team for saving them.

Poland: Cars collide with truck, killing 6 and injuring 11

Polish media are reporting that a collision involving six cars and a truck on a highway in western Poland killed six people and injured 11 others. The accident happened early Sunday afternoon on a highway near the city of Szczecin, which is close to the border with Germany. Private television station TVN24 broadcast images showing fire and heavy plumes of black smoke rising from the accident site. Local fire brigade spokesman Tomasz Kubiak told TVN24 that firefighters found the six victims after extinguishing the fire.
