Dubai bus crash: 11 Indian victims' bodies flown home, one cremated in UAE

The mortal remains of 11 Indians killed in a horrific road accident in Dubai were repatriated on Sunday while the body of a 22-year-old Indian was cremated here in the Gulf emirate, an official said. Twelve Indians were among 17 people killed in Dubai Thursday when a bus, mostly with Eid vacationers coming from Oman, entered a restricted lane and rammed into a low-clearance sign. The repatriation of 11 Indians was complete when the last three bodies were flown to Mumbai on an Air India flight, the official who was making arrangements for the flights was quoted as saying by the Gulf News. The flight departed at 3.39am Sunday. "All mortal remains were moved as scheduled. The procedures were completed by 11.45pm," he said. Meanwhile, Roshni Moolchandani, the youngest Indian victim killed in the crash, was cremated here on Saturday at the Jebel Ali crematorium. 5 killed in bus-trailer collision in Pakistan

At least five persons were killed and 20 others injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a trailer in Pakistan's Punjab province, according to a media report. The accident occurred on Friday night when an over-speeding trailer collided with the bus coming from the opposite direction in Bhakkar, a district in the province, Dunya News reported Saturday. The police and rescue teams rushed to the site and shifted the bodies and injured to the District Headquarters Hospital Bhakkar, where the condition of several injured was said to be critical. The bus was going to the country's Mansehra city from the port city of Karachi when the crash happened. Police officials in the area said the accident happened due to over-speeding and negligence of the drivers of the two vehicles and both were being interrogated after registration of the case. Road accidents are common in Pakistan. Most of the mishaps are caused due to reckless driving, over-speeding and bad roads.

Three killed in road accident in Mumbai

Three people, including two minors, were killed in an accident involving two tankers in suburban Vikhroli, a police official said on Sunday. The mishap took place near a hotel in Park Site area of Vikhroli on Saturday night when a roadside dweller's family was sleeping beneath a stationary tanker, he said. Another tanker hit the stationary vehicle from behind and as a result, three of those sleeping got crushed under its wheels, the official said. The deceased included a 50-year-old woman and her two grandchildren aged 15 and three years, he said. The moving tanker's driver, identified as Ashok Sahu, fled from the spot but was later arrested. He was booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304-A (causing death by negligence), he added.

Bride among 13 killed in Philippine truck accident: police

Thirteen people including a bride-to-be and two children were killed when the truck they were riding on after attending a traditional pre-wedding ceremony rolled over on a mountain road, police said Sunday. The dump truck was carrying 53 passengers in eastern Camarines Sur province on Saturday and was going down the highway when it lost control, injuring dozens of other people, said San Fernando town police investigator Victor Quinao. The group had come from participating in a Filipino tradition where a man and his family visit the home of a woman to formally ask for her hand in marriage, Quinao said, adding the bride was among those killed. "The truck lost control and rolled over, throwing off some of the passengers while others were crushed," Quinao told AFP, adding it was unclear why the bride-to-be was on the vehicle. Chittoor: 3 killed after bus rams into auto

Three persons were killed after an over speeding bus rammed into an auto here near Bhakarapet village of Chittoor district.Two of the deceased have been identified as Venkata Ramana and Ramanareddy, residents of Battinivaripalle village.According to officials, the duo, who had gone to Tirupati for a weekend animal market, was returning in an auto. When their vehicle reached Bhakarapet ghat road, an RTC bus, which was trying to cross a car in front of it, rammed into the auto.In the collision, the auto driver and both the passengers died on the spot, while the driver of the bus was beaten up by furious locals. However, the driver fled the spot.Bhakarapet police reached the spot and sent the bodies of the deceased to a hospital for post mortem.A case has been filed and investigation in the matter is underway.

9 hospitalised when subway car derails in Boston

A subway car has derailed in Boston, sending nine people to the hospital. Local emergency officials said none of the injuries are life-threatening. Officials with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said the accident occurred at about 11 a.m. Saturday when a Green Line subway car derailed in a tunnel near Kenmore Square. A 10th individual was reported injured but declined treatment. Emergency workers said they were told by witnesses that everything went dark and they were thrown around the train car. The cause of the derailment is under investigation. The derailment caused major delays on the public transit system.

Two injured as fire breaks out in godown

Two fire fighters were injured in an effort to douse a massive blaze at a godown filled with different chemicals near Jagannath ghat here on Saturday, officials said. Altogether 20 fire tenders managed to extinguish the flame around 2.45 pm, almost 12 hours after the fire broke out at the godown in the city's business hub, they said. Police said there was no report of any casualty or any person being trapped. The injury to the two fire fighters is not serious, the officials said. Initial investigation has revealed that the fire emanated from a nearby shanty, eventually spreading to the godown, located near the Howrah bridge. A forensic team has collected samples for a detailed probe, they said. West Bengal Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose had earlier in the day visited the site and took stock of the situation.

Toddler stuck in borewell, expected to be rescued early Sunday morning

Large-scale rescue operation continued on Saturday to pull out a two-year-old boy who fell into an over 150-foot-deep borewell in Punjab's Sangrur district. Authorities are expecting to retrieve the toddler, Fatehvir Singh, by early Sunday morning. With Singh remaining unconscious, family members and villagers were offering prayers for the safety of the child, who has been stuck in the borewell for over 55 hours now. Fatehvir, who is the only child of his parents and would turn three next week, fell into the unused borewell in a field when he was playing near his house around 4.00 pm on Thursday, officials said. The borewell was covered with a cloth and the boy accidentally stepped onto it. His mother tried to rescue him, but failed. Missing plane: Aerial search stalled on 6th day due to bad weather, ground troops scour for clues

Aerial search operation could not be undertaken on Saturday to trace the missing transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force in remote Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh due to poor weather conditions, even as ground troops continued combing the mountainous area for the sixth consecutive day. No headway in search for missing IAF aircraft even after six days

Search operations to trace the Indian Air Force (IAF) AN-32 aircraft, which went missing earlier this week, failed to yield any result for the sixth consecutive day on Saturday, despite concerted efforts by various agencies. With eight crew members and five armed forces personnel onboard, the IAF aircraft apparently lost contact with the ground control before it went off radar on June 3. Clean chit for intercepted Kuwait-bound vessel

A joint investigation into interception of a Kuwait-bound vessel by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) off the Gujarat coast has revealed that it was not engaged in any suspicious activities, the agency said Saturday. The ICG said the vessel, which had left Indonesia on April 27, was intercepted when it was being towed off the Mul Dwarka coast under suspicious circumstances, and brought to the Mul Dwarka harbour. Another vessel, which was also sailing towards Kuwait from Indonesia, had sank off the Diu coast in Gujarat, the ICG said in a release. A joint investigation and rummaging of the suspicious vessel, OSV Esnaad 712, by the ICG, the Marine Police, the Customs, and the Anti-Terrorist Squad, has confirmed that it was not engaged in any suspicious activity, it stated. Marathwada water grid blueprint being prepared: Maha CM

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Saturday said his government was preparing a blueprint of the Marathwada Water Grid Project to mitigate drought woes in the region. Marathwada, comprising eight districts including Aurangabad, has traditionally been a low-rainfall area and the grid project aims to create an integrated piped network to supply water for drinking, industrial and agricultural purposes all through the year.
