The periodic table of chemical elements is having its 150th birthday, and the UN scientific agency is holding a year of events to celebrate. Anyone who has studied chemistry will recognize the table, which organizes all chemical elements by the number of protons in a given atom and other properties. Russian scientist Dmitry Mendeleev published the first such table in 1969. The UN Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization kicked off the "International Year of the Period Table of Chemical Elements" on Tuesday with a ceremony including a Nobel chemistry laureate and Russia's science minister, among other dignitaries. Other activities UNESCO is organizing this year include an online competition to test high school students' knowledge of the table, and scientific experiments brought to schools around the world.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has written to the Delhi government over "bad influence" of election campaigns in government schools here.The letter comes a day after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia, while laying the foundation stone for 11,000 new classrooms across 250 schools at the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya on Monday, asked people to vote for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).As per the child rights body, election campaign and unannounced visits by ministers and party workers to Delhi government schools interrupt the studies of children and prove to be a bad influence on the students.It further said such visits should be undertaken keeping in mind the safety and security of the students in these schools."It has been requested that identity and purpose of the visit are to be verified thoroughly from any visitor in the school and proper entry registers are to be maintained at the main gate," the NCPCR said in its letter.
The Tamil Nadu government Tuesday informed the Madras high court that the state was not ready to hold talks with the protesting government employees or striking teachers. There were cases pending before the court challenging the strike and the government cannot hold talks with the protesters, advocate-general Vijay Narayan said. Narayan made the submission before Justice N Kirubakaran who asked the Joint Action Committee of Teachers OrganisationsGovernment Employees Organisations (JACTO-GEO) to inform the court if the protesting teachers were willing to withdraw the strike and resume work at least till the exams are over. Advocate NGR Prasad representing the unions submitted that they were ready to withdraw the strike immediately if the government was ready to hold talks with them. West Bengal Education minister Partha Chatterjee Tuesday said the government will ensure that new English medium schools have the requisite infrastructure before giving no objection certificate (NOC) to the institute. Chatterjee, after attending a review meeting of School Education department here, said before giving the NOC to an application for any new private English medium school, the state government will ensure that the concerned institute have the requisite infrastructure. "We will see if there is adequate building and accommodation, if there will be appropriate number of teachers. Whether the new institute will go by all the prescribed norms laid down by the government," the minister told reporters. : Four women students of city based NALSAR University of Law tested positive for swine flu and have been admitted to the state-run Gandhi Hospital here, University officials said Tuesday. The condition of all four students is stable and one of them is likely to be discharged by Tuesday evening, they said. Troubled by the influx of stray cattle which are majorly damaging crops, farmers in Jikhan Gaon village here revived their agitation and locked bovines in schools and public health centres. However, the district magistrate has taken exception to the conduct of villagers since alternate arrangements are already available. "SDM Mathura Kranti Shekhar was sent to ensure shifting of cattle from the Junior High school to gaushalas earmarked earlier for the purpose," District Magistrate Sarvagy Ram Mishra said.
