Patkar NGO issued defamatory press note against KVIC Chief, court told in defamation case

A witness in a criminal defamation case against NBA activist Medha Patkar told a Delhi Court Tuesday that her NGO had issued a libellous press note against KVIC Chairperson V K Saxena, a charge denied by her earlier. Nilesh Sachdev, an architect who appeared as a witness to support the complaint filed by Saxena, placed before the court a copy of the press release issued by the Narmada Bacahao Andolan (NBA) on November 24, 2000. Saxena alleged that the NBA's press release contained defamatory remarks about him and through it spread the falsehood that he made donation to NGO's support group and a news item, based on it, was published in a web portal. However, Patkar in her deposition in November last year denied issuing any kind of press release which allegedly defamed Saxena. 3 of family dead in Hisar accident

Three members of a family died when their car rammed into a truck in Haryana's Hisar district on Tuesday, police said. The incident occurred on the Hisar-Hansi bypass, about 25 km from here, when they were returning from the Delhi airport to the Damdama village in Sirsa district, the police said. Three persons were killed and as many got injured, police said The deceased have been identified as Jaskaran (46), his 11-year-old daughter, Gurgagandeep Kaur, and his brother, Gurmukh Singh (42), police said. Jakaran's wife, Harvinder Kaur, daughter Jai Kaur and son Jaldev Singh were admitted to a hospital, and the condition of the latter is stated to be critical, the police said.

Probing passport officials' role in issuance of passport to Sushil Ansal: Police to HC

The police told the Delhi High Court on Tuesday that it had launched a probe into the role of passport officials in connection with the issuance of the travel document to real estate baron Sushil Ansal, convicted for the 1997 Uphaar cinema fire incident that claimed 59 lives. The Crime Branch of Delhi Police, in a status report placed before Justice Najmi Waziri, said an "investigation regarding the role of passport officials has also been initiated". It added that a notice was served to the Regional Passport Office (RPO) "for the details of all passports issued to Sushil Ansal from 2000 onwards, including the one in 2018". The status report, filed through advocate Trideep Pais, said the police were probing all the aspects as regards the passport issued to Ansal. CBI arrests BSNL engineer for accepting Rs 2.30 lakh bribe

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a sub-divisional engineer of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), Solapur, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2.30 lakh to settle pending RAR bills."The CBI has arrested a sub-divisional engineer of BSNL, Solapur for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2.30 lakh from the complainant to settle pending RAR bills relating to contract work of cable laying," read a statement issued by the probe agency.The CBI team conducted searches at the official and residential premises of the accused, following which incriminating documents were recovered from various places.The arrested accused was produced before the special judge and has been sent to judicial custody till June 7.A case under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 has been registered against the accused.

NCLAT gives 4 weeks to Bakshi to settle dispute with HUDCO

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on Tuesday gave four weeks' time to Vikram Bakshi to settle his dispute with state owned-HUDCO which is claiming dues of Rs 195 crore from the McDonald's estranged partner. A two member bench of the appellate tribunal headed by Chairman Justice S J Mukhopadhaya said this would be the "last chance" to Bakshi to settle the dispute with Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO). "We allow four weeks time to Vikram Bakshi to settle the matter with HUDCO," said the NCLAT. The tribunal also directed Bakshi to file a report on the development by filing an affidavit in the matter before it. Earlier this month, fast-food chain McDonald's and Bakshi had announced to reach an out-of-court settlement, buying out its partner's stake in their JV Connaught Plaza Restaurants Pvt Ltd, which operates fast food chain in northern and eastern India. Hapur lynching case: SC asks victims to move trial court for supplementary charge sheet

The Supreme Court Tuesday asked the 2018 Hapur lynching victim to bring to the notice of the trial court the statements of two crucial witnesses recorded by a judicial magistrate. The trial court will decide the plea seeking direction to the Uttar Pradesh police to file a supplementary charge sheet in view of the statements recorded by two brothers of the deceased Qasim Qureishi, said a vacation bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Aniruddha Bose. While declining to direct trial court to ask the state police to file supplementary charge sheet in the case, the bench allowed the petitioners -- Samaydeen and Mehtab -- to bring the statements of the two brothers, Saleem and Nadeem, to the notice of the Hapur trial court. Delhi HC sets aside 'leave India notice' issued to Pak woman

The Delhi High Court Tuesday set aside the 'leave India notice' issued to a Pakistani woman married to an Indian man and residing here since 2005, saying the Centre did not follow procedure when it ordered her deportation. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice A J Bhambhani also set aside a single judge's order upholding the Centre's February 7 direction to the woman to leave the country within 15 days. The court said it was setting aside the 'leave India notice' "for lack of following procedure" and directed the government to consider the woman's application for citizenship. The bench also did not agree with the government's stand that the decision was taken on the basis of adverse security reports, saying the material, including intelligence inputs, placed before it was not sufficient for taking such a step against her. HC seeks Centre's reply on PIL for raising 20-week period to terminate pregnancy

The Delhi High Court sought the Centre's response Tuesday on a PIL for raising the time limit for terminating pregnancy in case of health risk to the mother or the foetus to 24-26 weeks, from the current cap of 20 weeks. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice Brijesh Sethi issued notices to the health and law ministries as also the National Commission for Women and sought their stand on the plea which contends that unmarried females and widows too should be allowed to undergo legal abortion. The court said the issue needed consideration and listed it for further hearing on August 6. Haryana: 2 SPOs arrested in connection with thrashing of woman in viral video

Pak turns heat on top judges, files cases for not disclosing properties abroad

The Imran Khan government has filed a complaint of misconduct against some Supreme Court and High Court judges for hiding their foreign properties in countries like Spain and the UK, according to a media report on Tuesday. President Arif Alvi has sent a reference of misconduct against three apex court judges who, allegedly, did not declare their foreign properties in their wealth statements, The Express Tribune reported. However, there is no official confirmation whether the Supreme Judicial Council has received the reference against the judges. The references, prepared by the law ministry, were filed with the help of a former Supreme Court judge, the report said said. Hanumangarh bike mishap: One body recovered from IG Canal, search on for four others

The body of one of the five members of a family who drowned in a canal in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh district was fished out on Tuesday after several hours of search, police said. Five members of a family, including three children, were feared dead after the motorcycle they were travelling on fell into the Indira Gandhi Canal on Sunday. 7 held with narcotics; Rs 12 lakh seized

Seven suspected drug peddlers were arrested after narcotics and over Rs 12 lakh were recovered from them in Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Tuesday. Two persons, Arshad Alai and Fayaz Ahmed, were arrested after 260 grams of heroin and the cash were allegedly recovered from their vehicle near Hari Market here in the morning, an officer said. In another incident, a couple and another woman, who were going to Punjab, were arrested during checking at Lakhanpur in Kathua district on Monday after 250 grams of heroin was found in their vehicle, the officer said. Two more person were arrested after 800 grams of cannabis was recovered from their possession at the Jammu Tawi railway station late on Monday, he said. All the accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, the officer added.

Pakistan's top anti-graft body on Tuesday asked the accountability court to issue an arrest warrant against main opposition PML-N chief Shehbaz Sharif in corruption cases, saying he is roaming free in London. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) also asked the court to dismiss his plea for exemption from appearance, Geo news reported. Yuva Sena member among five held for attacking PSI on duty

Five persons, including a local functionary of the Yuva Sena, were arrested Tuesday for allegedly attacking a police officer on duty in Osmanabad district of Maharashtra a day earlier, police said. Television actor Karan Oberoi, arrested on charges of raping and blackmailing a woman, has approached the Bombay High Court for bail after a sessions court rejected his plea for the relief earlier this month. The lower court had rejected Oberoi's plea noting that investigation into the case was incomplete, and hence it would be incorrect to release the accused on bail. 10-month-old baby raped by minor in Rajasthan

A 10-month-old baby was allegedly raped by her 15-year-old neighbour in Rajasthan's Karauli district, police said Tuesday. The accused took the baby to an isolated area on Sunday evening and committed the crime, investigating officer and SHO of Kotwali police station Roop Singh said.
