A 35-year-old woman, facing charges under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA), has been arrested by the city police. Sakina Jan Sayyed, resident of Ambivili in Kalyan tehsil of the district, was wanted in a case of robbery registered at Narpoli police station in Bhiwandi in 2016. She was finally traced and arrested by Crime Unit I of Thane city police Tuesday, said senior inspector Nitin Thakre. Police had also slapped charges under the MCOCA against her for allegedly being part of an organized crime syndicate. The crime branch had received a tip-off that Sayyed was going to visit a place near NRC Gates near Kalyan and arrested her, he said. She was handed over to Narpoli police, he added.
Two men have been booked for allegedly raping a minor girl in Rajasthan's Sikar district nearly three months back, police said on Wednesday. The incident came to light when the girl complained of stomach ache and she was taken to a doctor, who told the family that she was pregnant, local police station incharge Ramkishan Yadav said. Nearly three months ago, the minor was going to a grocery store when the accused -- Himmat and Chetan -- allegedly abducted her to a secluded place and raped her. The two threatened her with dire consequences if she spoke about the incident with anyone, Yadav said. After the doctor said she was pregnant, the girl shared her ordeal with the parents and an FIR was registered on Tuesday, the officer said. A case has been registered under Section 376 D (gang rape) of the Indian Penal Code and others sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. A search is on for the accused, Yadav added.

A head constable was allegedly arrested taking a bribe of Rs 5,000 in Rajasthan's Bhilwara district Wednesday, an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) official said. The accused, Udailal Jingar, posted at the Gangapur police station of the district, had allegedly demanded bribe from complainant Amar Singh to file a final report in a case registered against him and his family members. The policeman had allegedly promised to remove their names from the FIR. The head constable had earlier allegedly taken Rs 3,500 in bribe, ACB Inspector Hanuman Singh said. He said the complaint was verified and the accused was arrested accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 Wednesday. A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act against the head constable.
A local court Wednesday sentenced 18 people to life imprisonment for killing a 40-year-old man, accusing him of being involved in anti- social activities, 12 years ago. Additional district and sessions judge Sanjay Kumar Sahoo held all the 19 accused persons guilty of killing Maheswar Sasmal on May 12, 2007 in his village Phulta on the outskirts of this south Odisha city. One of the accused had died during trial and the court pronounced life term for the others, all of them residents of Phulta. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 7,000 on each of the convicts. In case of realisation of fine amount from the convicts, Rs 1 lakh from it is to be paid to the widow of the deceased, associate public prosecutor Anil Sahu said.
Three journalists of a Noida-based TV news channel, who were arrested for allegedly airing defamatory content against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, were Wednesday granted bail in the defamation case by a local court, their lawyer said. However, Nation Live scribes Ishika Singh, Anuj Shukla and Anshul Kaushik had not been released from the jail due to the order in another case of fraud and forgery still pending in the court, the lawyer said. Singh and Shukla were arrested on June 8 and remanded in 14-day judicial custody, two days after the channel aired the controversial content allegedly defaming Adityanath "without verifying" its authenticity. A local court Wednesday sent Union minister Prahlad Patel's 26-year-old son Prabal Patel, who was arrested in an attempt to murder case, to police custody for a day. Prabal Patel was among seven persons arrested in connection with an attack on a group of persons at Gotegaon town on Monday night that left five people injured. Efforts have been intensified to nab the minister's nephew, Monu, and four others also wanted in connection with the case, police said. Altogether 19 persons, including a woman and a child, working as bonded labourers were rescued by police in Golaghat district of Assam, a police officer said Wednesday. In a joint operation carried out by Barpathar and Ghiladhari police stations, the 19 persons were rescued from Ghiladhari village on Tuesday night, the officer said. The rescued persons were engaged for various works at one Anundoram Bora's house in the village. A case has been registered against Bora for engaging the persons in his house and farm fields, the police said. After receiving inputs provided by a person who was rescued on Tuesday the joint operation was launched and the 19 persons were rescued. Bora was absconding and his son was picked up for interrogation, the police said. As per the complaint, brokers had supplied the labourers to Bora in exchange of money from various places of Assam.
Two persons have been arrested for allegedly supplying arms illegally to criminals in Delhi, police said Wednesday. Mohammad Parvez (42) was held from south Delhi's Chitranjan Park on Tuesday, while his accomplice Mohammad Iqbaal (52) was nabbed from Hapur in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, they said. Parvez, a resident of Jasola village, had come to Chitranjan Park to supply illegal weapons to one of his clients when the police arrested him. Three pistols, 10 live cartridges and a motorcycle were seized from him, police said. "During interrogation, Parvez said he purchases arms and ammunition from Mohammad Iqbaal, a resident of Hapur, and sells them to clients in Delhi and NCR for a profit," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Vijay Kumar said. The CBI Wednesday again sought the custody of advocate Sanjeev Punalekar in rationalist Narendra Dabholkar's killing case, saying that he needs to be questioned in connection with some material retrieved from gadgets seized during the probe in the case. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made the plea before the court of additional sessions judge (special judge) R M Pande here through its special public prosecutor Prakash Suryawanshi. The number of cases where tribal and non-tribal dwellers could be evicted from forest lands has "reduced considerably" after a review of rejected claims for ownership rights under the Forest Rights Act, officials said Wednesday. The Supreme Court on February 13 had ordered eviction of 11.8 lakh "illegal forest dwellers" whose claim for land rights had been rejected by authorities. However, on February 28, it stayed the ruling and directed states to file affidavits detailing the process adopted in rejecting the claims. At a meeting in March, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs asked the states to carry out a village-level scrutiny of 19.50 lakh rejected cases and file their affidavits in the Supreme Court by July 12. The ministry had said that according to data from the states, around 40.50 lakh claims had been filed under the Forest Rights Act, 2006. Three suspected drug peddlers have been arrested with narcotics from different places in the Jammu region, police said Wednesday. During a checking on Tuesday night, a vehicle coming from Jammu city was intercepted at the Asia Chowk in Katra town of Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district. A person named Bishan Singh was arrested after 10 grams of heroin was recovered from him, an official said. In another incident in the district, a person named Ranjeet Singh was arrested with 31 grams of charas during frisking at Bhagga-Saldi village, the official said. In Jammu city, a patrolling team arrested Arun Sharma after 15 grams of heroin was seized from him at Patoli Chowk area.
