3 held after ammunition recovered in Faridabad

Three persons were arrested after a large amount of ammunition were allegedly recovered from them here, police said Friday. As many as 1,756 cartridges, five defused bombs, around 30 kg of cartridge shells were recovered. These cartridges are used in AK-47 and INSAS rifles, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Lokendra Singh said. The accused have been identified as Ramkumar, Dinesh and Irfan, the DSP said, adding that a case had been registered.

SI of anti-smugglers task force, 4 others held in Tirupati

: A sub-inspector attached to the anti-red sanders smuggling task force was among five people arrested Friday for allegedly smuggling the wood, police said. They were arrested by the task force personnel after intercepting speeding vehicles following a hot chase. Two vehicles with 21 red sanders logs were seized. The accused sub-inspector was driving one vehicle which was followed by the other carrying the four smugglers, the police said. A case has been registered and investigation has begun. Before joining the task force, the sub-inspector was in charge of law and order in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, they added.

Property dealer shot dead in Rohini

A 52-year-old property dealer was shot dead at his office by a man in Rohini area's Jain Nagar on Friday, police said. The Begumpur police station was informed about the incident at 3:45 pm, they said. Sanjeev Sharma was taken to the Brahmshakti hospital where he was declared brought dead, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) S D Mishra said. The man, who had covered his face, arrived on a motorcycle and shot Sharma in his office in Jai Nagar, police said. Preliminary investigation revealed that during the time of the incident a minor boy there. The office is of Yashdeep, the officer said. Sharma was a property dealer for the past seven to eight years, Mishra said, adding that police are probing all angles. The DCP said as per witnesses a man came on a motorcycle. The vehicle did not have a complete registration number, he said. Footage from CCTV cameras installed in the area are also being examined, Mishra said. Woman among 5 held for Ola driver's killing

Five people, including a woman, were arrested for allegedly killing an Ola driver, who was found dead in Sikandrabad near Greater Noida last month, police said Friday. The accused had on February 12 booked a cab to Sikandrabad with an intention of robbing the cab, the police said. "Upon reaching an isolated spot, they used the wrench kept in the car to kill the driver and dumped his body in a sugarcane field," a police spokesperson said. "The accused then took the car to Etah district where they wanted to sell it off. However, they failed to find any buyer for the vehicle and decided to abandon it there only in order to avoid being caught with it," the spokesperson said. The body of the driver was found on February 20, following which a case was registered at the Phase 2 police station in Noida and investigation taken up by police. Scrap dealer shot dead in northwest Delhi

A 36-year-old scrap dealer was shot dead allegedly by two masked bike-borne in northwest Delhi's Wazirpur after he resited their robbery bid, police said Friday. The deceased, identified as Mohammad Nasim, is a resident of Nangloi and the accused could not rob Rs 1.75 lakh the victim was carrying, they said. The incident took place on Thursday. Police were informed at around 7.40 pm that the two men who were chasing another man on a bike, have shot him while attempting to snatch a bag from him, police said. Man arrested for killing businessman after looting him in Ghaziabad

A 40-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing a Ghaziabad-based businessman after looting his bag, which had over Rs 5 lakh in cash, police said Friday. The accused has been identified as Ritesh, a resident of Gaziabad, who used to head an armed-biker gang, they said. According to police, the accused along with his associates have committed more than 50 armed robberies in Delhi, Ghaziabad, NCR, Kota and Bhopal. Man held for raping minor daughter for a month

A 45-year-old man was arrested Friday for allegedly raping his 13-year-old daughter repeatedly for a month in Ganjam district of Odisha, police said. The man was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim, a student of class 8, on Thursday, Inspector-In-Charge of Bhanjanagar Police Station S K Sahu said. The accused was booked under various sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Medical examination of both was conducted, he said. The girl in her FIR alleged that her father raped her repeatedly for a month till she mustered the courage to inform the police. Her mother was unaware of the incident. This was the second such arrest in the district in a fortnight. On February 14, the police had arrested a 42-year old man for raping her minor daughter for last five years in a village in Jarada area.

Houses set afire after missing man's body found near lady

A mob set fire to around 10 houses at a village in Purba Medinipur district after the body of a missing youth was found floating in a pond Friday, police said. The affected houses included the residence of a woman with whom the deceased youth was romantically involved. The youth and the woman, belonging to different communities, were residents of Srirampur village, and their families were opposed to the relationship, police said. The youth had gone missing on Wednesday and his family lodged a police report. His body was found in a pond near the woman's house Friday morning, though her family members were nowhere to be seen, police said. Sharif moves Pak SC over denial of bail in Al-Azizia reference case

Money laundering case: ED searches premises of Chanda Kochhar, Venugopal Dhoot

The Enforcement Directorate conducted searches at the premises of former ICICI Bank Managing Director Chanda Kochhar and Venugopal Dhoot of Videocon Group in Mumbai and Aurangabad respectively in connection with a money laundering case, an official said on Friday.The development comes weeks after the ED registered a criminal case against them for alleged money laundering. The case was registered under the Prevention of Money Laundering (PMLA) Act.On February 22, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had issued lookout circulars (LOCs) against Kochhar, her husband Deepak Kochhar and Videocon Group's Managing Director Dhoot."The LOCs were issued after the FIR was filed in the case. Pakistani-origin UK peer charged with attempted rape

A Pakistani-origin member of the House of Lords in the UK, Lord Nazir Ahmed, has been charged with attempted rape in connection with incidents dating back to early 70s, police said on Friday. Ahmed, who is often at the forefront of anti-India campaigns including backing separatist Kashmiri and Khalistani outfits in Britain, has been charged with two counts of attempted rape and one count of indecent assault dating back to the 1970s and is due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on March 19. A 25-year-old man who allegedly duped several people by posing as an army officer was arrested here Friday, the police said. Shubhkant Chaturvedi, the accused, allegedly introduced himself as 'Major Vihan Singh Shergill', a police officer said. Major Vihan Singh Shergill is the lead character played by actor Vicky Kaushal in the recently released film "Uri". Hospital fined Rs 48 lakh after newborn loses eyesight

The Rajasthan consumer commission on Friday imposed a penalty of Rs 48 lakh on a private hospital after a newborn had lost eyesight due to medical negligence. A bench of Kamal Kumar Bagri and Meena Mehta gave the order on a plea by Anup Yadav against Sanjeevani Hospital in Kotputli town -- around 110 km north of Jaipur. Yadav's son was born premature and the hospital staff gave oxygen more than the prescribed limit, which contracted the retina of the eyes and led to blindness. Family members consulted other doctors but the problem was declared untreatable, a statement said. The bench found the hospital guilty of negligence and ordered the hospital management to pay Rs 48 lakh as compensation to the family.

ICICI Bank-Videocon case: ED searches offices, residential premises of Chanda Kochhar, Dhoot

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday carried out searches against former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar, Videocon Group promoter Venugopal Dhoot and a few others in connection with a bank loan fraud case, according to officials. The raids were carried out in at least five offices and residential premises in Mumbai and a few other locations, they said. The agency, in a statement, said it is "conducting searches under PMLA at the premises of Chanda Kochhar, former chairman ICICI Bank, and Venugopal Dhoot of Videocon Group in Mumbai and Aurangabad respectively". Kochhar's residence in South Mumbai was also brought under the action, they said. Plea in SC seeking framing of laws against fake news

A petition was filed Friday in the Supreme Court seeking directions to the Centre to frame laws to curb the menace of fake news. The plea said there should be accountability, liability and responsibility of the authorities and departments concerned to prevent spread of such news. The plea, filed by advocate Anuja Kapoor, sought directions to the ministries of Home Affairs, Law, Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology to constitute a committee for tackling fake news on various social media handles.
