An international rights group says Egypt executed three Muslim Brotherhood members who were sentenced to death following torture and beatings to extract confessions. Friday's statement from Human Rights Watch says families of the men were notified of their hanging on Thursday and asked to come to the morgue to pick up the bodies. The three were convicted last year for the 2014 killing of a judge's son in the Nile Delta town of Mansoura. HRW says a letter from one of the men was reportedly smuggled out of prison, describing torture and beatings. Michael Page, deputy director at the New York-based group, says Egypt "committed a glaring injustice by executing three men who apparently gave 'confessions' extracted through electric shock and other torture." There was no immediate comment from authorities.

The NHRC Friday sent a notice to the Delhi Police chief in connection with the murder of a woman by a man despite she earlier complaining to the police about being harassed by him. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in a statement said it has also asked its the Director General (Investigation) to depute a team from its investigation division to conduct a fact-finding on-the-spot investigation. "The team is directed to examine all the stakeholders and to obtain necessary records including relevant portion of the general diary of the police station," it said. The NHRC said it has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that despite having lodged a complaint with the police about her harassment and blackmailing by the contractor of a shoe factory, a woman worker was stabbed to death by him in front of her house in Nagloi on February 6. The anti-corruption squad arrested a contractor allegedly involved in a Rs 42-crore scam in the Madhya Pradesh Excise Department, police said. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Amrendra Singh told reporters here that on a tip-off, contractor Vijay Kumar Shrivastav (49) was arrested from Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow. The contractor was carrying a reward of Rs 20,000 on information leading to his arrest. Singh said that Shrivastava had secured the contract of a liquor shop in Indore's MG Road area in lieu of Rs 7.30 crore during financial year 2016-17. But he did not deposit this amount. He said, "The liquor contractor deposited fake bank challans to the excise department against the payment of this amount, which led to loss to the state exchequer." The officer said that the police have been investigating 16 liquor contracts given by the Excise Department. So far, 12 people, including Shrivastava, have been arrested and some of the accused are still on the run.

Cash and gold jewellery worth Rs 1.25 crore was found to have been stolen from a branch of Yashvant Co-operative Bank in the district Thursday, the police said. The branch is located at village Kale in Panhala tehsil. Assistant Police Inspector Mangesh Desai said the unidentified thieves broke into the bank by cutting iron bars of the window using a gas cutter. A former Miss Costa Rica has become the latest woman to accuse Oscar Arias, an ex-president and Nobel Peace laureate, of sexual misconduct. The woman is alleging that Arias grabbed her, groped her and kissed her against her will at his home in 2015. The case was first made public late Thursday by Escri-Viendo, a Facebook page dedicated to entertainment news. Prosecutors confirmed Friday that a criminal complaint for sexual abuse was filed against Arias, the second this week. At least five women have now accused him of actions ranging from unwanted fondling or innuendo to sexual assault. Arias denied wrongdoing after the initial complaint surfaced. Since then he and his lawyer have declined to comment further citing the pending legal case.
An FIR has been lodged against two IPS officers including a special Director General of police in Chhattisgarh for alleged criminal conspiracy and illegal phone tapping. The FIR was lodged by the state Economic Offences Wing (EOW) based on findings during investigation into a Civil Supply Corporation scam unearthed in 2015. The newly-formed Congress government in the state on January 8 had set up a 12-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Inspector General of Police, Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) and EOW, SRP Kalluri to probe the alleged multi-crore Civil Supply scam. The Beed district court Friday sentenced three persons, including a doctor couple, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in a case related to a woman's death during an illegal abortion. The court convicted Dr Sudam Munde, his wife Dr Saraswati Munde and another accused, Mahadev Patekar, in the 2012 case. Mahadev Patekar's wife Vijaymala, a mother of four daughters, was admitted to Dr Munde's hospital at Parli in the district for abortion in 2012. The family wanted her to terminate the pregnancy as medical examination had revealed that the foetus was female. During the abortion, carried out illegally, she died due to excessive bleeding. A case was registered at Parli police station against 17 accused including Dr Munde and his wife. Justice R Shankar of the Jharkhand High Court Friday referred the CBI's plea to increase the prison term of jailed RJD chief Lalu Prasad and others in a fodder scam case to the chief justice for listing it in the appropriate bench. The petition was listed for hearing by the bench of Justice Shankar, but during the hearing, the judge said he is referring it to the chief justice for sending it to a suitable bench. The central probe agency has moved the high court after a special CBI court awarded three-year imprisonment to Prasad and three others - former IAS officers Beck Julius and Mahesh Prasad, and RJD leader R K Rana - last year. It had also sentenced former MP Jagdish Sharma to seven years in jail the case pertaining to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 89.27 lakh from Deoghar treasury in the early 1990s. The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has alleged involvement of some Odisha Police personnel in the kidnap and trafficking of a 16-year-old girl, who was recently rescued from Rajasthan, and demanded action against erring officials and traffickers. On February 5, the DCW, along with Rajasthan Police, rescued the girl from Jhunjhunu. She was allegedly kidnapped and trafficked from Rourkela in Odisha in 2017. The Jharkhand High Court Friday quashed the summons issued by a special CBI court to former Bihar Director General of Police D P Ojha and CBI officer A K Jha in connection with a fodder scam case, observing that the procedure was not properly followed before issuing summons to them. The bench of Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh quashed the summons that had been issued last year by the CBI court to make the duo accused in the fodder scam case pertaining to fraudulent withdrawal from the Deoghar Treasury in undivided Bihar. After the ex-DGP and the CBI officer moved the high court challenging the lower court's summons, Justice Singh said the CBI court had not followed the procedure properly before issuing the summons. Under the Code of Criminal Procedure Section 319, a summon is issued only when there is concrete evidence by which punishment can be awarded, the court said.
