: In a freak incident, a two-year-old girl child's head got stuck between steel pillars at a railway station while playing and these had to be cut with a welding machine to free her, police said Friday. Keerthana was playingon the platform at the Tiruttani railway station when she stuck her head into the gap between the pillars and then couldn't take it out, police said. On hearing the girl's cries, her parents rushed to the spot and tried to bend the steel structures, but to no avail. They alerted railway police, who used a welding machine to cut the pillars without harming the girl and gently eased the child out. Keerthan and her parents, hailing from Sirukumi village, were on their way to Tirupathi when the incident took place, they said. The entire operation took about one hour, police said.
Justice Pramath Patnaik was Friday sworn in as a judge of the Orissa High Court. Chief Justice K S Jhaveri administered the oath of office to Justice Patnaik, who was repatriated here to his parent high court from the Jharkhand High Court. Justice Patnaik was first made an additional judge of the Orissa High Court in September 2014. In December the same year, he was transferred to the Jharkhand High Court, where he was working as a permanent judge until his repatriation was recommended by the Supreme Court collegium earlier this year.
A driver working for a friend of Sanjeev Khanna told the special CBI court here Friday that he had dropped Khanna at a hotel in south Mumbai on the day Sheena Bora was killed. Khanna is a co-accused in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case along with Sheena's mother Indrani Mukerjea and media baron Peter Mukerjea. Khanna is Indrani's former husband. The prosecution Friday examined Imtiaz Sheikh, the driver of Khanna's friend Balwinder Dhami, before special judge J C Jagdale. He was examined to confirm that Khanna was present in Mumbai the day Sheena was murdered. A minor girl, who was seriously injured when a 19-year-old college student attacked her with a knife here for spurning him, showed signs of improvement, doctors treating her said Friday. Her health condition showed signs of improvement after operations were performed though she continues to be critical, they said. The youth had allegedly attacked the girl on February 6 with a knife used for cutting open coconuts, inflicting serious injuries on her, police had said. The doctors said she was unconscious when brought to the hospital.
The body of a 20-year-old man was found hanging inside the godown of a store at an upscale shopping mall in Ghaziabad's Indirapuram, police said Friday. The victim, Narendra, was an employee of the store. Narendra's family received a call from the owner of the store on Wednesday, saying he had allegedly stolen Rs 50,000 and was kept locked inside its godown. When they reached the mall, they found his body hanging in the godown, Assistant Superintendent Of Police Ravi Kumar said. Police have registered an FIR into the incident and are probing whether it was a case of suicide or if there was any foul play. However, Narendra's family alleged that he was not being paid salary for the last six months and when he confronted the owner, he was beaten, strangled and hanged in the godown of the store to misguide the police.
A special Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court in Gandhinagar Friday issued a bailable warrant against Gujarat minister Purshottam Solanki after he failed to appear before the court in the alleged Rs 400-crore fisheries scam. Special court judge R M Vora issued the warrant against Solanki and kept the matter for hearing on March 2, before which, the BJP leader is required to approach the court to get the warrant cancelled. Apart from Solanki, who is Minister of State for Fisheries in the BJP government in Gujarat, the ACB court had also initiated proceedings against former minister Dileep Sanghani and issued summons to both of them in the past. Sanghani's lawyer was present in the court on Friday. However, as neither Solanki nor his lawyer were present, the court issued a warrant against him. Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar reached Shillong, Meghalaya's capital city, Friday to face questioning by the CBI for his alleged role in destroying evidence in the Saradha chit fund scam, an official said here. Kumar will be interrogated by CBI sleuths at two locations -- in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office here and at an undisclosed location, he said. He is accompanied by three IPS officers of the Kolkata Police. "Kumar has been lodged in a top hotel in the city. The state police is giving security cover to him," the senior Home Department official told PTI. A group of CBI sleuths are coming from Delhi to question him and they are scheduled to reach here Friday night. A woman and her paramour were arrested for killing her husband when he objected to their relationship, police said Friday. Assistant Superintendent of Police Ravi Kumar said Israaz objected to his wife Razia's relationship with Salim. Finding him a hurdle, Salim strangulated Israz on December 26. Three men have been arrested for allegedly killing a woman, whose body was exhumed from a village in Raigad district of Maharashtra on Thursday, almost two months after her murder, police said on Friday. The accused have been identified as Sunil Shirke (44), Ramchandra Jadhav and Vijay More. While Shirke and Jadhav were arrested on Wednesday, the third accused was held a day later, police said. A 32-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly duping people on the pretext of providing domestic help through his fake placement agency, police said Friday. The accused has been identified as Sanjay Sahani alias Sanjay Mukhiya (32), a resident of Gautam Budh Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh and a native of Madhubani district in Bihar, they said. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Friday said it has attached immovable assets worth over Rs 76 lakh of a Manipur MLA in connection with an alleged illegal arms haul case. An agency spokesperson said it has attached four land properties and residence of Saikul constituency MLA YamthongHaokipas this property constituted "proceeds of terrorism as defined under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA)". The assets are located in Imphal East district, he said. The NIA case relates to a probe into a criminal case of missing of 56 pistols and 58 magazines from the DG pool 'kote' (armoury) located in the premises of the battalion of Manipur Rifles, between September, 2016 and early 2017. The National Green Tribunal Friday rapped the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation over encroachments in the green belts under its jurisdiction and directed the corporation to immediately restore the area. A bench headed by Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore said when the green belt area was handed over to the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation, it was their duty to maintain it in the same condition. "Strangely, not only the municipal corporation, Ghaziabad had himself made the encroachment but it did not take any steps against those who had also encroached the same. "We dispose of this application with the direction to the Municipal Corporation, Ghaziabad to take immediate steps for removal of encroachment on the green belt. The said area be restored to its original form, at the cost of the encroachers. However, the Municipal Corporation, Ghaziabad shall submit a compliance report of this order within one month. Four of the six persons accused of raping a 19-year-old woman in front of her father in Kishanganj district were arrested, police said Friday. To scotch rumours that were being spread "to vitiate the atmosphere", Superintendent of Police Kumar Ashish said the accused persons and the victim belong to the same community. A special police team arrested the four accused on Thursday while two others are still at large. The six men forcibly entered their house at a village under Kodhiwadi police station area on Tuesday night and took the woman and her father to a deserted place, around half a km from their residence, the victim said in her FIR. The Jharkhand High Court Friday granted bail to former Jharkhand chief secretary Sajal Chakraborty in a fodder scam case. Justice Awadhesh Kumar Singh accepted the bail plea of Chakraborty in the case. He, however, will have to stay in the jail as he has not secured bail in another case of the fodder scam. Chakraborty was convicted in the two cases along with former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad, other political leaders, bureaucrats and fodder suppliers. The multi-crore fodder scam was unearthed in the early 1990s when Prasad was the chief minister of undivided Bihar.
President Ram Nath Kovind Friday said the judiciary is guarding against attempts by people with vested interests to misuse public interest litigations (PILs) so as to obstruct legitimate decision making. A Delhi court on Friday sought response from Enforcement Directorate on a bail application of lawyer Gautam Khaitan who was sent to judicial custody in a fresh case of alleged possession and laundering of black money. Khaitan, who is also an accused in AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam, was produced before Special Judge Arvind Kumar on expiry of his custodial interrogation in the money laundering case and the ED requested the court to send him to judicial custody (JC). The ED said that if left free, Khaitan may flee from justice and hamper the probe after which the court sent him to JC till February 20. The Delhi High Court has granted one-day parole to a suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative, serving life term for killing a police officer in the Batla House encounter, to attend his sister's wedding in Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, but directed that he will go there in police custody. A bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Vinod Goel said the convict, Shahzad Ahmad, shall be taken on Saturday in "proper police escort" to attend the marriage of his sister. The court also said that, if required, the in-charge of the escorting police party can keep the convict overnight in a lock-up at the local police station during the course of the journey. The bench, in its order of February 5, also said that expenses of the journey, including his and the police party's train tickets, shall be initially borne by the jail authorities and would be reimbursed by the petitioner before the next date of hearing in the trial court on February 16.
