Drug peddlers nabbed with weapons

Rupnagar police claimed to have arrested two drug peddlers with weapons. Ricky (30) of Ghaziabad and Umesh (40) of Rishikesh were arrested from Rupnagar Thursday evening, SSP Swapan Sharma said Friday. Three weapons, including an imported 30 bore revolver, were recovered from them, he said. Sharma said Ricky (30) had worked as an immigration agent in Jalandhar for two years, allegedly duping people to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore. The duo allegedly supplied drugs in Jalandhar, Mohali, Rupnagar and surrounding areas. The SSP said they used to procure drugs and weapons from outside Punjab.

Car mows down youth in Sikar

A youth was killed and three others injured when a speeding car hit them in Rajasthan's Sikar district, police said Friday. The four youths were running on the road as part of Army recruitment preparation when the speeding car hit them in Gadoda village, they said. Krishn Gurjar (20) died, while the three others were admitted to a government hospital, Nechwa Police Station In-Charge Rajesh Kumar said. He said Gurjar's body was handed over to family members after post-mortem and a case was registered against the car driver. Kumar said the car overturned and caught fire after the accident. The driver managed to flee, he added.

Cops suspended after toddler's murder; sexual assault not ruled out

Five policemen, including an SHO, have been suspended for alleged negligence, five days after the mutilated body of a toddler was found in a garbage dump in Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, triggering a public outrage over the brutality of the crime. The policemen were suspended for alleged delay in registering the case after the girl was reported missing, and also for delaying the probe which eventually led to the discovery of her body on June 2, officials said. The two-and-a-half-year-old had gone missing from Tappal township on May 30. Her body was found three days later in a garbage dump near her house. The post-mortem examination confirmed death due to strangulation. It has not found any sign of sexual assault but this cannot be ruled out at this stage. HP govt transfers 20 administrative service officials

The Himachal Pradesh government on Friday transferred seven IAS and 13 state administrative service officials.The personnel department transferred the IAS officers on the recommendations of the Civil Services Board.The officers are Ravinder Nath Batta, Akshay Sood, Balbir Singh Badalia, Kadam Sandeep Vasant, Rakhil Kahlon, Ashwini Kumar Chaudhary and Amit Kumar, an official release said.The Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service officers who have been shifted are Neeraj Kumar, Manmohan Sharma, Ashwani Raj Shah, Satish Kumar, Virender Sharma, Ashwani Kumar, Sandeep Sood, Charanji Lal, Vishal Sharma, Rahul Chauhan, Raman Gharsanghi, Shiv Mohan Singh Saini and Sant Ram.

Court directs jail authorities to admit Dawood's brother Kaskar to hospital

A local court on Friday directed the Central Jail authorities here to admit underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's brother Iqbal Ibrahim Kaskar either to St George's Hospital or JJ Hospital by the evening.The court gave the directions on a plea moved by Iqbal, currently in the jail, through his counsel Vishal Ingole citing medical reasons.Speaking to media persons, Ingole said: "My client has diabetes, high blood pressure and can barely walk as he has a swelling in his feet."The Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of Thane Police had arrested Kaskar in September 2017 on the charges of extortion.The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint filed by a builder, who alleged that the fugitive don's brother had been extorting money from him since 2013.The builder was taken into confidence by cops and a complaint was registered against Kaskar at Kasarvadavali police station.

France January 2015 attacks trial set for 2020: source

Suspects linked to the jihadist attacks that struck the Paris region in January 2015 will stand trial from April to July next year, a legal source said on Friday. A special Paris criminal court will hear the case against 14 people accused of helping the attackers who killed 17 people in a three-day series of attacks. The victims included 12 people killed at the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo by Cherif Kouachi and his brother Said on January 7, 2015. Over the following two days the third gunman, Amedy Coulibaly, shot dead a young policewoman and killed four people at a Jewish supermarket. All three gunmen were killed by police. The suspects going on trial next year are accused of providing them with logistical support. The three attackers had claimed allegiance to jihadist groups. The source told AFP the trial would run from April 20 to July 3, 2020. Since those killings, more than 250 people have died in a series of jihadist-linked attacks in France.

2 arrested, juvenile apprehended for robbing houses in south Delhi

Two men were arrested and a juvenile was apprehended from south Delhi area for their alleged involvement in house robberies, police said Friday. According to a senior police officer a resident of Khanpur complained to police about a robbery at his house on May 31. The complainant told police that upon returning from a stroll at 5 am he found his house burgled. "Police analysed CCTV footage of the area and identified Sourav, a resident of Budh Bazar in Sangam Vihar and one of the accused. He was later arrested," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Vijay Kumar said. Following Sourav's interrogation, co-accused Ajeet Chauhan was arrested and a juvenile apprehended, police said, adding the accused used to mortgage jewellery stolen from houses to a finance company. Some jewellery, nine mobile phones, Rs 5,200 cash, one safe stolen from Sainik Farms area and house-breaking tools have been seized from the accused who were previously involved in 11 cases of robbery, police said.

CBI court allows IRCTC scam accused Vinay Kochhar to travel Singapore, UK

A special CBI court on Friday allowed IRCTC scam case accused Vinay Kochchar's application seeking permission to travel to Singapore and United Kingdom (UK).The court of special CBI Judge Arun Bhardwaj allowed Kochhar to travel to Singapore till June 20 and to the UK from July 4 to 23.The court while allowing Kochhar's application imposed conditions regarding his traveling abroad and said that he shall furnish a personal bond and a surety of Rs 25 lakh each."He shall inform the court about his arrival in India from Singapore on June 24 and shall surrender his passport before this court within 48 hours of his return from the UK," the judge ruled.The IRCTC scam case accused had approached the court seeking permission to travel with his wife to Singapore to visit his son and grandchildren from June 12 to 20. NGT directs DJB, DPCC to take action against people using tubewells illegally

The National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to take action against those using tubewells illegally to extract groundwater. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said illegal installation of tubewell is an offence under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and authorities should initiate prosecution, apart from recovering compensation. The tribunal also asked authorities to dismantle and seize equipment to prevent reopening of sealed tubewells. "The DPCC and the DJB may adopt a policy in this regard for universal approach to be adopted against illegal withdrawal of water," the bench said. It also said that a further action-taken report in the matter should be furnished within a month through e-mail. NGT raps DPCC for inaction against burning of plastic in north-west Delhi's park

The National Green Tribunal has rapped the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) for not taking action against burning of plastic and PVC wires at a park in north-west Delhi's Mangolpur area. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said being guardian of environment, the DPCC cannot disown its responsibility by simply saying that it is not the owner of the land, shifting its responsibility to the DDA. The tribunal took exception over the submission of the DPCC that it has asked the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) who is the owner of the land to take action. An irked NGT directed the member secretary of the DPCC to be present before it and explain as to why action be not taken in refusing to take steps even after pollution is bought to notice, and responsibility is merely shifted to the DDA. Aligarh murder case: NCPCR asks police to submit report

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on Friday sought a fact-finding inquiry report from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Aligarh into the alleged murder of a two-year-old girl.The body of the girl, identified as Twinkle Sharma, was found in a garbage dump on Sunday.Earlier in the day, the Uttar Pradesh Police constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the murder case."An SIT has been formed under the Superintendent of Police, Rural Area (SPRA). A forensic science team, the Special Operations Group (SOG) and a team of experts have been included in the SIT to conduct the investigation on a fast-track basis. The Supreme Court Friday allowed former Karnataka minister and mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy, accused in a multi-crore illegal mining case, to visit his home town Ballari to see his ailing father-in-law.
