Over 7,500 Kuki people flee to Mizoram from violence-hit Manipur for asylum

Over 7,500 people have fled to Mizoram from the violence-hit Manipur, an official said on Monday. A total of 7,527 ethnic Zos, known as Kukis in Manipur, have crossed over to Mizoram till 5 pm on Monday, he said. They have taken shelter in eight districts of the state. Kolasib has the highest number of displaced people at 2,685, followed by Aizawl (2,386) and Saitual (2,153), the official said. A total of 164 people have taken shelter in Champhai district, 36 in Khawzawl district, 27 in Serchhip district, 19 in Mamit district and 57 in Lunglei district, he said. The displaced people are lodged in temporary relief camps, while many others were given shelter by their relatives, he added. Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said the unification of all ethnic Zo tribes in India, and bringing them under one administrative unit was one of the main objectives of the founders of his Mizo National Front (MNF). Cyclone Mocha damages over 230 houses and eight refugee camps in Mizoram

At least 236 houses and eight refugee camps have been damaged after super cyclone Mocha' struck several parts of Mizoram, officials said on Monday. A total of 5,749 people in more than 50 villages were affected by the powerful winds on Sunday, they said. However, there were no reports of fatalities. Super cyclone Mocha' made landfall along the Myanmar-Bangladesh coasts on Sunday, after intensifying into the equivalent of a Category-5 storm, causing extensive damage to the southeastern coastlines and forcing the evacuation of over five lakh people in low lying areas. Of the 236 houses, 27 were completely damaged and 127 houses were partially damaged, the officials said. Siaha district in the southern part of Mizoram, which shares its border with Myanmar, was the worst hit as 101 houses, including two relief camps, suffered damages, they said. The super cyclone made landfall on the Teknaf shorelines before making its way through the Naf River that divides Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Over 5,800 people from Manipur fled to Mizoram after violence: Officials

Over 5,800 people from Manipur have fled to Mizoram and taken shelter in different districts, following the recent violent clashes between the Meiteis and tribals in the neighbouring state, officials said on Sunday. A total of 5,822 people, belonging to the Chin-Kuki-Mizo community, are lodged at temporary relief camps across six districts of Mizoram, they said. Aizawl district currently has the highest number of such displaced people at 2021, followed by Kolasib (1,847) and Saitual (1,790), the officials said. Meanwhile, Mizoram Lok Sabha member C Lalrosanga has endorsed the demand by Manipur tribal MLAs for a separate administration for tribals. Over 2,000 people from violence-hit Manipur flee to Mizoram: Official

More than 2,000 people from Manipur have fled to neighbouring Mizoram and sought shelter in the state following ethnic violence, a senior official said on Monday. State Home Commissioner and Secretary H Lalengmawia said that a total of 2,056 internally displaced people from Manipur have entered Mizoram and taken refuge in different parts of the northeastern state till Monday evening. The senior official said that most of the people who have come from Manipur belong to the ethnic Zo (Mizo) community and they have been given shelter by their relatives. The government is also making efforts to provide those people with temporary shelters. Saitual district, which shares border with Manipur, has the highest number of such people at 827, followed by Kolasib district at 757, he said. Centre denies flights' request to evacuate Mizoram residents from Manipur

A senior Mizoram official on Saturday claimed that the Centre has turned down the state's request to provide flights to evacuate its residents stranded in violence-hit Manipur. The Mizoram government has urged both the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Civil Aviation to charter flights for the stranded people hailing from the northeastern state, he said. "The Centre turned down our request, and so has a private airline (to evacuate people of Mizoram stuck in Manipur)," the official told PTI. The Centre is yet to make a comment on it. Mizoram taking steps to evacuate people stranded in Manipur: Zoramthanga

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga Friday said that his government is taking steps to evacuate people from the state stranded in violence-hit Manipur. Zoramthanga speaks to Manipur CM, expresses concern over situation in state

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga Thursday had a telephonic conversation with his Manipur counterpart N Biren Singh and also wrote to him urging for restoration of peace. Zoramthanga said that besides speaking to Biren Singh he has also spoken to a senior officer in the union home ministry, who assured him of more Central Armed Police forces for Manipur. Mizoram distributes property cards under Centre's SVAMITVA scheme

Mizoram on Monday distributed Property Cards under the Centre's Survey of Villages Abadi and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas (SVAMITVA) Scheme, an official statement said. Land Revenue and Settlement minister Lalruatkima handed over property cards to 420 beneficiaries - 254 and 166 in Tachhip and Phulpui villages in Aizawl district, the statement issued by state's Information and Public Relations department said. Amit Shah to visit Mizoram to lay foundation stone of development projects

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Mizoram on Saturday during which he will inaugurate and lay foundation stone of development projects worth Rs 2,414 crore, officials said. Shah will inaugurate the Assam Rifles battalion headquarters complex at Zokhawsang and the integrated command and control centre under the smart city limited. The home minister will lay the foundation stone for construction of Zorinpui- Longmasu section of the National Highway 502A, sources said. Shah will also lay the foundation stone for the construction of two sections of the Aizawl bypass (package 1 and package 2) and the construction of Laldenga centre. Drugs worth Rs 400 cr seized by police in Mizoram, Assam; three arrested

Huge quantities of drugs valued at more than Rs 400 crore were seized from two neighbouring northeastern states Mizoram and Assam on Wednesday and three persons were arrested, officials said. The seizure of 39 lakh tablets of specific brands of decongestant and antihistamine worth Rs 390.4 crore was made from a house in east Mizoram's Champhai town bordering Myanmar. It is one of the biggest drug hauls made in the state, they said. Decongestants are a type of medicine that provides short-term relief for nasal congestion while antihistamine is commonly used to treat symptoms of allergies. A police officer said that heroin, estimated to be valued at over Rs 12 crore, was found in a car in Assam's Karimganj district. Mizoram: 42 candidates in fray for Lunglei Municipal Council polls

Altogether 42 candidates are in the fray for the first Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC) polls in Mizoram on March 29, officials said Thursday. The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and opposition Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) and Congress have fielded 11 candidates each, while the BJP is contesting in nine wards, they said. More than 40,000 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the municipal elections. Polling will be held between 7 am and 4 pm, the officials said. Mizoram exports bird's eye chilli to US for first time to expand the market

Mizoram has exported locally grown bird's eye chilli', a Mizo organic chilli, to the United States for the first time as part of an initiative to expand the market and boost farmers' income, an official said on Wednesday. State Agriculture Minister C. Lalrinsanga flagged off 7.5 metric ton of typical Mizo chilli to the US from south Mizoram's Lunglei district on Tuesday, the official said. The organic chilli was harvested by farmers from the three southern districts of Lunglei, Siaha and Lawngtlai, she said. The shipment is being transported to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh from where it will be sent to Nevada in the US, she said. Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Thursday said the northeastern state is rich in natural resources and has the infrastructure, which is conducive for setting up big industries. No encroachment by Assam in state's territory: Mizoram Home Minister

Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamlianna Monday told the state legislature that no encroachment was made in the state's territory by Assam. Mizoram did not lose any land to Assam, rather it occupies some areas which fall in Assam according to the 1933 notification, he said. No farmer practicing plantation or farming along the Mizoram-Assam border has faced harvest problem till now, the minister said. "Assam does not encroach or grab Mizoram's territory. In fact, some areas occupied by Mizoram now fall under Assam as per the notification issued on 9 March, 1933, which the neighbouring state (Assam) accepts as its constitutional boundary," Lalchamliana said in a written reply to a question from opposition Congress leader Zodintluanga Ralte. Implementation of healthcare scheme a top priority of govt: Mizoram CM

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Thursday said the implementation of the healthcare scheme is one of the top priorities of his government under the state's flagship programme Socio-Economic Development Policy (SEDP). He informed the state assembly that his government has so far allocated about Rs 150 crore under SEDP for the implementation of the healthcare scheme during five financial years from 2019.
