MNF's Zothantluanga wins Aizawl West-I bypoll in Mizoram

MNF's Zothantluanga Thursday won the by-election to the Aizawl West-I Assembly constituency in Mizoram by a margin of 7,035 votes, officials said. Zothantluanga got 12,309 of the total 18,154 votes polled. His nearest candidate, Lalbuanga Sailo (Independent), who was supported by the Zoram People's Movement(ZPM)-Congress combine, bagged 5,322 votes, Returning Officer Vanlalngaihsaka said. Zothantluanga(65), a former student leader, is currently adviser to the ruling MNF or Mizo National Front. He has been a lieutenant when the party was underground and is one of the founding leaders of the Mizo Students Union (MSU). The bypoll was held as ZPM leader Lalduhoma vacated the seat which he won in the November 28 state elections and decided to retain the Serchip constituency.

BJP wins first seat in Karnataka

: BJP in Karnataka has posted its first victory with its candidate from Haveri C S Udasi trouncing Congress' D R Patil by a margin of 1,40,882 votes, Election commission said on Thursday. While Udasi, who was an MP in the last Lok Sabha, secured 6,83,660 votes, Patil got 5,42,778 votes. In the 2014 Lok Sabaha polls, Udasi had won against Saleem Ahmed of Congress by a margin of 87,571 votes. According to trends available with the Election Commission,BJP in Karnataka was racing ahead of the ruling Congress-JDScoalition by leading in 23 out of total 28 Lok Sabha seats inthe state. Congress was ahead in two seats and JD(S) in one, with trends available so far, indicating that the alliance between the two parties may not have worked. Independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh was leading against Chief Mininister H D Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil in Mandya.

BJP set to hold its Rajasthan fort

The BJP is set to repeat its 2014 stellar performance in Rajasthan as the latest trends show the party leading in 24 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the state, with its ally the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party leading in the other seat. The Congress, which has a wafer-thin majority in the state Assembly, has failed to breach the BJP fortress of Bikaner, Churu, Jhalawar and Jalore where lotus has bloomed in the last three parliamentary elections. In the Bakiner seat, Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is leading by more than 2.60 lakh votes over his cousin and former IPS officer Madan Gopal Meghwal. People rejected opposition's 'negative' politics: Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Thursday said the people of the country have rejected opposition's "negative" politics as he congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the BJP's imminent victory in the Lok Sabha polls. Riding on a massive Modi wave sweeping through most parts of India, the BJP was set to return to power Thursday as it led in 298 seats, according to trends released by the Election Commission for all 542 seats that went to polls. "I want to congratulate Modiji for the victory of BJP and its allies in the Lok Sabha polls. The people have discarded negative politics of opposition. West Bengal bypolls: BJP ahead in four seats, TMC in three

In consonance with its surge in Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal, the BJP is also striding ahead in four of the eight Assembly seats, where byelections were held following one death and seven resignations, according to the Election Commission sources. The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) is leading in three seats, while the Congress is ahead in one.
