2 dead, 18 injured as tractor-trolley overturns in UP's Chitrakoot district

Two women were killed and 18 others injured when a tractor-trolley overturned in Bharatkoop area here, police said on Tuesday. The vehicle overturned at Kolwa-Manpur turn on Monday evening when its occupants were returning from Satna in Madhya Pradesh after attending a religious function, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Chakrapani Tripathi said. Shivkumari (65) and Maina Devi (45) died on the spot while the injured were rushed to hospital, where the condition of three of them was serious, police said.

Five reported dead, 1 injured in car-bus collision near Maharashtra's Latur

Five persons including two women were killed after their car collided with a state transport bus in central Maharashtra's Latur district on Tuesday morning, police said. The incident took place around 8.30 am at Haibatpur village on Udgir-Nalegaon road. Six people including two women were traveling in a car to Nanded after visiting a temple at Tuljapur when the car collided with an oncoming bus of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation, said an official. The car turned turtle due to the impact, he said. The victims were rushed to a hospital in Latur where five of them were declared brought dead. Another passenger from the car was undergoing treatment, the police officer said. As per the preliminary probe, the car driver seemed to have lost control of the vehicle, he said. "We are conducting probe and a case will be registered," he added.

7 tourists dead, 10 injured as vehicle falls into gorge in Himachal's Kullu

Seven tourists died and 10 suffered injuries as a tempo traveller fell into a gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district on Sunday evening, a local MLA said. The BJP MLA from Banjar, Surender Shourie, streamed a video on Facebook Live via his social media account on Monday at around 12.45 am, informing people about the accident that occurred near Ghiyaghi in Banjar subdivision. The injured were first taken to Banjar hospital from where they have been referred to Kullu hospital after being given first aid, he added. The Banjar MLA said the victims were residents of various states including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi. They are being identified, he added. Shourie thanked the district administration and the locals for carrying out rescue operation despite darkness.

4 reported dead as truck runs over people sleeping on road divider in Delhi

Four people sleeping on a road divider were killed and two others injured in the early hours of Wednesday after they were run over by a speeding truck in northeast Delhi's Seemapuri area, police said. Two of the victims died on the spot, they said. At 1:51 am on Wednesday, a truck that was crossing the DTC depot traffic signal and going towards the DLF T-point crushed six people sleeping on a road divider. The driver was driving rashly and negligently, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) R Sathiyasundaram said. Two people died on the spot and four were rushed to GTB Hospital. Out of the four injured, one was declared brought dead and another died during treatment, the DCP said. The deceased were identified as Kareem (52), Chotte Khan (25), Shah Alam (38), all residents of New Seemapuri, and Rahul (45), a resident of Shalimar Garden in Uttar Pradesh's Sahibabad, police said. There is a need to strictly follow road safety rules and stringent implementation of traffic norms in order to bring down fatalities due to accidents in the country, Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director & CEO, Martin Schwenk said on Thursday. With the death of former Tata Sons Chairman Cyrus Mistry in an accident involving a Mercedes-Benz vehicle earlier this month bringing back road safety issues on the forefront again, he said there is not much of a gap as far as regulations are concerned but enforcement needs to be stricter. "If everyone would behave as per the regulation, we would already have a significant reduction in road fatalities, and that's for two-wheeler, three-wheeler and four-wheeler," Schwenk told PTI here on the sidelines of SIAM annual session. He said the unfortunate death of Mistry has brought back "road safety on the agenda in a different way". Faulty project reports responsible for road accidents, says Gadkari

Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday attributed some of the road accidents to faulty project reports and stressed that companies need proper training for preparing detailed project reports for construction of highways and other roads. The Road Transport and Highways minister said that the government is encouraging use of new technologies. "Some DPRs (Detailed Project Reports) prepared by companies are worst and are responsible for road accidents," Gadkari, who is known for his frank views said at an event here. He underlined the need for organising training programme for companies preparing DPRs. "Shuruwat wahan se karo. Agar woh sudhrenege nahi, toh poora tumhara satyanash ho jayega (Beginning should be made from DPR. If the companies preparing DPRs do not improve, the problem will reoccur)," he said. Cyrus Mistry death: Mumbai gynecologist was driving Mercedes, says police

A well-known gynecologist in Mumbai was driving the car which crashed on a road divider on Sunday, killing former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry and another occupant of the vehicle, police said. Primary information suggests that the car was over speeding and tried to overtake another vehicle from the wrong side (from the left), a police official told PTI. The gynecologist, Anahita Pandole (55), and her husband Darius Pandole (60) survived the crash, while Mistry (54) and Jahangir Pandole, brother of Darius, were killed in the accident, which happened around 3 pm, about 120 km from Mumbai, the official said. Mistry and Jahangir were in the back seats, the official said. Darius was in the the front seat with Anahita, who was at the wheel, he said. A woman was driving the car and tried to overtake another vehicle from left side, but lost control and crashed into the road divider, an eyewitness said.
