Delhi sees 625 new Covid-19 cases, 7 deaths; positivity rate at 9.27%

Delhi on Monday reported 625 fresh COVID-19 cases and seven deaths, while the positivity rate stood at 9.27 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department. The fresh cases came out of 6,744 tests conducted the previous day, the department said in its latest bulletin. With the fresh cases and fatalities, Delhi's infection tally increased to 19,94,448 and the death toll to 26,427, it said. On Sunday, Delhi reported 942 COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 7.25 per cent. On Saturday, it logged 1,109 cases with a positivity rate of 11.23 per cent, and nine fatalities. Last Monday, the city recorded eight deaths and 1,227 cases with a positivity rate of 14.57 per cent. Before this, Delhi logged more than 2,000 cases for 12 consecutive days.

China announces plans to issue visas for stranded Indian students

China on Monday announced plans to issue visas to hundreds of Indian students stranded at home for over two years due to Beijing's strict COVID restrictions, besides various categories of travel permits for Indians including business visas. "Warmest congrats to #Indian #students! Your patience proves worthwhile. I can really share your excitement & happiness. Welcome back to #China!" Ji Rong, Counsellor, Department of Asian Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China tweeted. Her tweet cited a detailed announcement by the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi announcing the opening of visas for students, businessmen and families of those working in China. As per the announcement, X1-Visa, will be issued to students who intend to go to China to pursue long-term study for higher academic education, including newly-enrolled students and students who return to China to resume their studies. Over 23,000 Indian students, mostly studying medicine, are reportedly stuck back home due to COVID visa .

Mumbai sees 592 new Covid cases, 27% fall from Sunday; 5,769 active cases

Mumbai on Monday reported 592 COVID-19 cases, which is 27.6 per cent lower than the addition to the tally a day earlier, and two deaths, a civic official said. It took the tally in the metropolis to 11,38,941 and the toll to 19,673, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official added. On Sunday, the city witnessed 818 cases, which is 226 more than the figures for the day, and one death, he pointed out. It is also the third consecutive day when the number of cases detected was less than 1,000, he said. Of the new cases, only 21 patients were symptomatic, the official said. Japan's PM Kishida tests Covid positive, in isolation, cancels travels

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and cancelled his planned travels while he isolates and recuperates. Kishida developed a slight fever and cough late on Saturday and a PCR test for the coronavirus was positive, said Noriyuki Shikata, the cabinet secretary for public affairs at the prime minister's office. Dolo 650 maker rejects allegations of Rs 1,000 cr worth freebies to doctors

Drug firm Micro Labs has termed the allegations that it offered freebies worth Rs 1,000 crore to doctors to promote its anti-inflammatory drug Dolo 650 as baseless. The Supreme Court on Thursday was told by an NGO that the Central Board of Direct Taxes has accused the Bengaluru-based drug firm of distributing Rs 1,000 crore freebies to doctors for prescribing its 650 mg tablets. In a statement, a Micro Labs spokesperson said that in some of the recent media reports it has been falsely and maliciously alleged that the company has been distributing freebies worth Rs 1,000 crore to promote Dolo 650 in one year. "This is highly misleading and is affecting the reputation of Micro Labs, pharmaceutical industry and doctors," the spokesperson added. The annual sales of Dolo 650 have been Rs 360 crores, about 8 per cent of the company sales. Mumbai sees 818 new Covid-19 cases, one fatality in last 24 hours

Mumbai on Sunday reported 818 new coronavirus cases that raised the tally of infections to 11,38,349, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. Of the 818 new cases, only 57 patients were symptomatic while the rest were asymptomatic, it said. The COVID-19 death toll rose by one to 19,673, the BMC said in a bulletin. At least 8,347 swab samples were tested in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of tests conducted so far in Mumbai to 1,80,10,697. With 881 patients recovering from the coronavirus infection during the day, the count of recoveries in the metropolis reached 11,12,915, leaving the city with 5,761 active cases. The case recovery rate in Mumbai stands at 97.8 per cent, while the overall growth rate stood at 0.072 per cent between August 14 and 20, the bulletin stated.

Maharashtra sees 1,832 Covid-19 cases, 2 deaths; active tally now 11,641

Maharashtra on Sunday reported 1,832 COVID-19 cases and two fatalities, which took the tally to 80,84,383 and the toll to 1,48,195, a health department official said. A day earlier, the state had reported 1,855 cases and two deaths. Of the new cases, Mumbai Circle led with 1,259, followed by Pune Circle (295), Nashik Circle (78), Nagpur Circle (100), Kolhapur Circle (39), Latur Circle (32), Aurangabad Circle (16) and Akola Circle (13). One of the two COVID-19 fatalities was reported from Mumbai city and the other from Satara in western Maharashtra, the official said. The recovery count increased by 2,055 in the past 24 hours and touched 79,24,547, leaving Maharashtra with an active caseload of 11,641. First lady Jill Biden has tested negative for COVID-19 and will leave South Carolina, where she had isolated since vacationing with President Joe Biden, and rejoin him at their Delaware beach home, her office said Sunday. Eight fatalities and 1,652 cases of Covid were logged in the city on Wednesday with a positivity rate of 9.92 per cent.
