Karnataka on Saturday reported 1,713 fresh COVID-19 cases and four virus-related deaths, taking the total infections and fatalities to 40,40,111 and 40,166 respectively, the state health department said. Maharashtra on Saturday reported 1,855 COVID-19 cases and two deaths, which took the tally to 80,82,551 and the toll to 1,48,193, a health department official said. A day earlier, the state saw 2,285 cases and five fatalities. Of the new cases, Mumbai Circle led with 1,229, followed by Pune Circle (263), Nashik Circle (117), Nagpur Circle (112), Kolhapur Circle (48), Latur Circle (33), Akola Circle (27) and Aurangabad Circle (26). Tamil Nadu reported 639 new COVID-19 infections, pushing the overall tally to 35,62,092, the health department said on Friday. There were no fresh fatalities and the death toll remained unchanged at 38,033 in the State, a medical bulletin said here. A team led by an Indian-origin researcher has discovered a key vulnerability across all major variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, including the recently emerged BA.1 and BA.2 Omicron subvariants. The weakness can be targeted by neutralising antibodies, potentially paving the way for treatments that would be universally effective across variants, the researchers said. The study, published on Thursday in the journal Nature Communications, used cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to reveal the atomic-level structure of the vulnerable spot on the virus' spike protein, known as an epitope -or part to which an antibody attaches itself. Spike protein is used by the SARS-CoV-2 virus to enter and infect human cells. Thane district in Maharashtra has reported 303 new coronavirus positive cases, taking its infection tally to 7,37,728, a health official said on Friday. With the addition of these cases on Thursday, the district currently has 1,641 active cases, he said. Since no patient died due to the infection during the day, the fatality count remained unchanged at 11,938, he said, adding that the overall recovery figure has reached 7,24,599, he added.
India saw a single day rise of 15,754 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 4,43,14,618, with the active cases increasing to 1,01,830, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Friday. New coronavirus cases reported globally dropped nearly a quarter in the last week while deaths fell 6% but were still higher in parts of Asia, according to a report Thursday on the pandemic by the World Health Organisation.
