Two boys died Sunday in a lightning strike in Dongar village in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, police said. A bolt from the sky struck Sumit Giri (12) and Akshay Bharti (16) when they were standing under a tree to protect themselves from rain while grazing cattle, said Rampaili police station inspector K Shrivastava. He said the deceased hailed from Shiv Nagar area.
Number of deaths due to accidents in chemical industries have come down by nearly 41 per cent from 2015 to 2018, but the number of injured has significantly gone up, the Environment Ministry said. The number injured has gone up from 192 in 2015-16 to 728 in 2017-18, the ministry said recently. While the number of deaths due to chemical leakage or accidents in 2015-16 were 66, in 2016-17, there were 90 deaths. In 2017-18, they came down to 39, it said. The ministry said that the number of chemical industry accidents have also reduced by more than 50 per cent in 2017-18 compared to 2015-16. While the number of accidents in 2015-16 were 64, in 2016-17 there were 57 accidents and in 2017-18 they came down to 31, it said. Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) Sunday said it has donated Rs 3 crore towards relief and rehabilitation works for the people affected by cyclone Fani in Odisha. The cheque was handed over by JSPL Chairman Naveen Jindal to state Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on June 22, the company said in a statement. The fund was donated in support of relief efforts following the devastating cyclone Fani that had affected the state earlier this year, it said. "JSPL reiterates its commitment to partner with the Government of Odisha to extend all support for relief and restoration works in the state. In this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with the people and Government of Odisha for the rebuilding the cyclone affected areas," it said. A wagon of a coal-laden goods train caught fire at Bahanaga railway station in Odisha's Balasore district on Sunday. No one was hurt in the incident, railway officials said. Smoke was detected in the wagon of the goods train which was proceeding from Paradip to West Bengal and prompt steps were taken to douse the flames, Bahanaga station master R N Behera said. The alert railway staff immediately informed the concerned authorities after noticing smoke from the wagon. This was the second such incident in less than a fortnight in the district. On June 10, similar mishap took place near Sunday's mishap site.
The search for 8th missing mountaineer will be carried out on Monday after the team of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) recovered seven bodies of foreign tourists near Nanda Devi.These tourists were hit by an avalanche on May 26 and were missing since then. The bodies were traced at an altitude of approximately 21000 feet near the peak from where the Mountaineers reportedly went missing. They were on an expedition to a Nanda Devi East peak when they met the tragic fate.A 10-member team of ITBP dug out the seven bodies, including that of a woman mountaineer, from under the snow. The ITBP had launched search operation last week to search for the missing mountaineers in which 4 were British, 2 were Americans, and 1 each from Australia and India.Recovered dead bodies have been retrieved and taken to a nearby site. Further transportation will probably be done by helicopter winching operations as terrain conditions don't allow carrying the bodies through land route, said a source.Earlier ..
A Guwahati-bound flight from Hyderabad made an emergency landing at the Biju Patnaik International Airport here on Sunday after a passenger allegedly indulged in unruly behaviour on board. The IndiGo flight from Hyderabad to Guwahati landed here after it was diverted under emergency protocol. The 20-year-old passenger was deplaned and handed over to the airport police, officials at the airport said. The passengers on board were scared after the man created a ruckus and even tried to open a door of the aircraft, a police officer said, adding, the man had violated safety norms despite repeated warnings. The man was taken to the Capital Hospital here after he was deplaned, the police officer said. The flight took off for Guwahati after offloading the passenger, an official at the airport said.
At least five persons were killed and three others injured Sunday when a vehicle rolled down into a 200-feet deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, police said. The accident occurred at Kewal villager near Budhal in the border district around 4.15 pm, a police official said. He said a rescue operation was immediately launched after the vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into the gorge. Two persons were found dead on the spot while the driver of the vehicle and two others succumbed to injuries on way to a hospital, the official said. The three injured were evacuated from the accident site and shifted to the hospital, he added.
The Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, a religious pilgrimage atop a hilltop that attracts lakhs of devotees from across the world every year, will get a dedicated in-house disaster response force by September next year, a senior official said Sunday. Simrandeep Singh, the Chief Executive Officer of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), said training of the board staff who will be the first respondents in case of any eventuality has already begun at the headquarters of 7th battalion of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in Punjab. Nearly 86 lakh pilgrims visited the shrine, atop the Trikuta hills in Reasi district of Jammu region, last year, highest in the last five years. "The six week training of the first batch of 25 staff started on May 18 and is almost heading for completion. Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) team on Sunday recovered seven bodies of foreign tourists, who were hit by an avalanche near Nanda Devi on May 26 and were missing since then.They were on an expedition to a Nanda Devi East peak when they met the tragic fate.A 10-member team of ITBP dug out the seven bodies, including that of a woman mountaineer, from the snow. The searches are on for another body as there were eight members in the team that had gone missing on way to the 17,800-foot-high peak.Earlier on June 14, a joint operation was conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF), ITBP and other local agencies.The attempt to rescue the trapped mountaineers from Nanda Devi East is named Operation Daredevil. Standing at a height of 7,816 metres, Nanda Devi is the second highest mountain in India and 23rd highest overall.
Four people travelling in a multi-utility vehicle were killed early Sunday in a collision with a container truck in Maharashtra's Buldhana district, police said. The mishap took place at around 4am on the Nagpur- Aurangabad highway in Anjani Budruk area of the district, an official said. He identified the deceased as Manohar Haribhau Kshirsagar (67), Nalini Manohar Kshirsagar (62), Megha Manohar Shirsagar (31), and Gajanan Nagare (26), who was driving the MUV. The container truck and MUV skidded off the road due to the impact of the accident, he said. A case has been registered against the container truck driver, said Inspector Amol Malwe of Dongaon police station.
A Mumbai-bound IndiGo flight from Delhi faced a nose wheel malfunction after landing at the airport on Sunday, the airline said. In an official statement, IndiGo said the landing was as per schedule and the aircraft was towed for further inspection by a technical team. It said that the aircraft was now operational after maintenance. "An IndiGo flight 6E 189 from Delhi to Mumbai faced a nose wheel steering fault after landing safely in Mumbai. The landing was as per schedule. The aircraft was towed to the parking bay for further inspection by IndiGo's technical team," the airline said. "After necessary maintenance action, the aircraft was declared serviceable and is now operational. This was a precautionary landing and not emergency as reported," it added.
The death toll in China's Sichuan Province earthquake mounted to 31 on Sunday.The earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter Scale struck Gongxian County in China's southwest province of Sichuan, local authorities said.According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 10:29 p.m (local time), was at a depth of 10 kilometres.The injured were rushed to the hospital for treatment. At least 17 people were killed and 24 others sustained injuries after a seven-storey under-constructed building collapsed in southwestern Cambodia's Preah Sihanouk province, authorities said on Sunday.The incident took place in the wee hours of Saturday in the coastal town of Sihanoukville. About 40-50 construction workers were sleeping at the construction site when the building collapsed, reported Xinhua news agency.Seng Loth, a spokesman for the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction, told Xinhua news agency that the project was unlicensed and the provincial authorities had warned the developer twice about the project.In a Facebook post late on Saturday, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and those injured in the incident.The rescue work is underway. Police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
