Vehicle safety group Global NCAP has given three stars safety ratings out of five for adult occupant protection to Maruti Suzuki India's (MSI) premium hatchback Ignis sold in South Africa after conducting crash tests. The model, which is manufactured at the company's Gurgaon plant and exported to South Africa, achieved three stars in frontal crash test at 64km/hr. The crash tests were conducted by Global NCAP and the Automobile Association of South Africa as part of its latest #SaferCarsforAfrica initiative, the vehicle safety group said in a statement on its website. Global NCAP rated the structure of Ignis as unstable due to weak chest protection for the driver. It pointed out that the model got a low score in child safety too as Suzuki did not recommend a specific Child Restraint System (CRS) in the test car. In a long pending demand of railways' running staff, the national transporter has increased their allowance from the present Rs 253.50 per 100 km to Rs 525 per 100 km, a senior official said Wednesday. The railways' running staff -- incharge of actual operation of trains -- consists of loco pilots and guards who are primarily responsible for smooth running of trains in all types of weather conditions and all over the network. They are often away from their headquarters and family for many days at a stretch. After accepting the recommendations of 7th Pay Commission in 2016, the allowances admissible to other categories of staff were finalised, but the issue of running allowance admissible to the running staff category was pending finalisation. Fresh 73 cases of forest fire were reported from parts of Uttarakhand on Wednesday, said an official. However, the number of fire incidents declined against Tuesday's 94, Chief Conservator of Forests PK Singh said. Around 5,000 regular employees and daily wagers had been deployed to douse the flames with the help of police, NDRF, SDRF, Revenue Department and local people, he said. Since the beginning of the forest fire season, nearly 2,000 hectares of green cover had been destroyed, PK Singh said. Nainital had been the worst hit with 289 fire incidents followed by Almora (201) and Tehri (105), he said. Rain would have helped control such incidents but the MeT Department has predicted the continuation of the dry spell.
A fire broke out at a godown in Park Circus area of south Kolkata Wednesday afternoon, an official said. The fire was brought under control around 4 pm, two- and-a-half hours after it broke out, the official said. At least 15 fire tenders were pressed into service to bring the blaze under control at the godown, which is situated near the railway tracks in Eastern Railway's Sealdah South section. The godown at Rifle Range Road stores bamboos and plywood, and was partially gutted in the blaze. An officer of Kolkata Police said that there was no casualty in the incident. A tanker carrying highly inflammable chemicals caught fire on the Ambala-Rajpura highway here Wednesday after a truck collided with it, bringing vehicular traffic to a standstill for one hour, police said. No one was injured in the fire which could have led to a major tragedy had the tanker exploded, they said. The drivers of both the vehicles jumped to safety after the fire broke out, police said. As the garbage dump fire in south Goa continues to rage on since Monday, fire personnel and civic authorities have launched a joint operation to put out the flames. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant Wednesday told reporters that he was taking stock of the situation prevailing at Sonsodo garbage dump located on the outskirts of Margao town. The Portuguese-era dump caught fire Monday. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. "I am getting frequent updates from Director of Fire and Emergency, Ashok Menon," the CM said. Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Siddhivinayak Naik said efforts are underway to douse the fire. The smoke caused by smoldering garbage has filled the air around the landfill site.

Two persons were killed when an unidentified vehicle rammed into their motorcycle in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, police said Wednesday. The accident occurred near Pandey Pokhra here Tuesday evening, they said. Rohit Turha (22) and Rakesh Rajbhar (12) were going to Bansdih when the unidentified vehicle hit their motorcycle and fled the scene, police said. Turha and Rajbhar died on the spot and their bodies were sent for post-mortem, they said. Efforts are on to nab the absconding driver, police said.

A fire ripped through a factory in Greater Noida in the early hours on Wednesday, police said. Nobody was injured in the fire that broke out around 3 am at the factory on Gurudwara road in Surajpur area, they said. Fifty girls were safely evacuated after a fire broke out in a girls hostel near the Janakpuri metro station in west Delhi on Wednesday morning, the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) said. Six of the girls were taken to a nearby hospital due to problems caused by smoke inhalation, Chief Fire Officer Atul Garg said. Two of them were discharged after first aid, he said. The fire department said they received a call about the blaze at 3 AM after which four fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The fire broke out in an electric panel at the basement entry of the hostel, the fire officer said. The fire was brought under control by 3.30 AM, the fire officer added.

A United States marine has died in Australia after succumbing to injuries received during a training accident, the force's commanding officer said Wednesday. Lance Corporal Hans Sandoval-Pereyra was injured during a vehicle accident during the drill on Saturday near the northern Australia regional hub of Darwin. He was airlifted to hospital but was unable to be saved. Thousands of marines have passed through the rotation in Darwin since 2012, in an annual arrangement between long-time defence allies Washington and Canberra. Commanding officer for the rotation in Darwin, Colonel Russ Boyce, said the marines were saddened by the loss of Sandoval-Pereyra. "He was a beloved member of our community and our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends," Boyce said. "We are extremely grateful to our Australian partners for their valiant efforts to save this young marine's life."
