DU's admissions committee to meet Tuesday, may discuss upper caste quota

The Admissions Committee of the Delhi University will meet here Tuesday and may discuss the implementation of 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker section of the general category, sources said Monday. The varsity's Academic Council, in its meeting which held on January 2, had decided to introduce 30 new courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in almost 20 colleges. Some of the approved courses include Bachelor of Arts (BA) (Honours) in Bhimrao Ambedkar college, BA (Hons) in Economics in Dyal Singh college and Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa college, BA (Hons) in Philosophy in Hansraj college among others. The post graduate courses which have been approved include Master of Arts (MA) in English in Gurunanak Dev college and Master of Science (MSc) in operational research at Shaheed Sukhdev college of Business Studies and Keshav college. Row over cancellation of permission for retd judge's Fergusson

A row erupted Monday after the permission for retired high court justice and rights activist B G Kolse-Patil's lecture on the Indian Constitution at the prestigious Fergusson College here, was withdrawn at the last moment. Justice Kolse-Patil, however, went on to address students on the campus, after he was denied permission to deliver his lecture in the amphitheatre of the college. The organising committee members blamed the college authorities for the cancellation, however, the Deccan Education Society, which runs the college, said they had offered the organisers the venue other than the amphitheatre as it is under litigation, but didn't get any response. Tension prevailed on the campus for some time as activists of the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) objected to the lecture. TN CM launches KG classes in govt schools

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami Monday kicked off a pilot project enabling children to attend kindergarten classes based on Montessori education in english medium at government middle schools with anganwadi centres in the State. Palaniswami formally launched the programme at a function held at a Government Girls Middle School here on Monday, an official release said. The project would benefit 52,933 children in 2,381 anganwadi centres in the State, it said. The kindergarten classes would be supervised by the head masters of the respective middle schools. The school education department would train the teachers under the Samakra Shiksha Abhiyaan scheme. Samagra Shiksha is an overarching programme of the Ministry of Human Resource Development for the school education sector extending from pre-school to class 12. Adolescent school students to be made aware of HIV-AIDS

The Odisha AIDS Control Society has launched a programme to sensitize adolescent students in schools on HIV, AIDS and sexual transmission diseases, an official said Monday. The adolescent education programme was launched in Ganjam district, having the highest number of HIV positive persons in the state. The children will be made aware of the cause of the spread of STDs by the teachers in the district, AIDS control programme officer in Ganjam, Hemant Sahu, said here. As many as 60 teachers - half of them women - of 30 high schools in at least 14 out of the 22 blocks, have been sensitized on the cause of HIV and how to prevent them, Sahu said. The programme has been launched in collaboration with the school and mass education department. Teachers from highly vulnerable blocks have been selected for training, he said adding that those teachers would create awareness among students, especially those studying in classes IX and X, at least once a week. MP: Two juveniles held for sodomising junior student

Two youths were Monday detained for allegedly sodomising a class 8 student in their school hostel at Nipania area here in Madhya Pradesh, police said. The alleged incident occurred on the night of January 19 when the accused duo called the victim to their hostel room and sexually assaulted him, Vijay Nagar area City Superintendent of Police Pankaj Dixit told PTI. The youths are students of class 10 and 11 in a reputed English medium school. The police officer said a case has been registered against the accused duo under sections 377 (unnatural offences) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), after parents of the victim lodged a complaint with Lasudia police station Sunday afternoon. The principal of the school could not be contacted despite repeated calls.

Raj govt mulling to set up petroleum university

The Rajasthan government has proposed a three-year diploma course in petroleum engineering at the Government Polytechnic College in Jodhpur and is mulling to set up a petroleum university in the state, the assembly was informed Monday. Replying to a question during the Question Hour, Minister of state for technical education Subhash Garg said the state government was also considering revision of syllabus and introducing courses in mechatronics engineering and automobile design in polytechnic colleges. He said the government will open new polytechnic colleges for women at district-level to provide quality education. The government has introduced a choice based credit system from the 2017-18 session in Rajasthan Technical University, Kota. Will soon fill vacant posts to improve quality of education: Rajasthan minister

Rajasthan minister Govind Dotasara said Monday that the Education Department will soon fill vacant positions to improve the quality of education and provide jobs to unemployed youths. Replying to question in the Rajasthan Assembly, the minister said the previous government had announced vacancies for various posts without completing any formalities and the present government is committed to fill the vacant positions soon. As on January 1, 2019, posts of 1,642 principals, 1,158 headmasters, 9,912 lecturers, 224 grade-1 physical education teachers, 13,990 senior teachers, 496 and 5,056 grade-2 and grade-3 physical education teachers, 11,906 grade-3 level-1 teachers and 13,940 of grade-3 level-2 teachers were vacant, he said. Dotasara said 58,324 posts were vacant in the department.

J-K govt sets up panel for school infrastructure

The Jammu and Kashmir's administration has set up a panel for implementation of saturation of toilets, drinking water and electricity in government schools in the state, a senior official said Monday. The General Administrative Department (GAD) has ordered constitution of district-level committee on this issue. "Sanction is hereby accorded to the constitution of a district-level committee for achieving 100 per cent, saturation of toilets, drinking water and electricity in the government schools in the state," Commissioner-Secretary to general administrative department (GAD), J-K, Hilal Ahmad said. A five-member committee will be headed by the district development commissioner as chairman. The committee will prepare a detailed project report after undertaking actual assessment of deficient schools on the minimum requirement basis. Presidency VC tells fasting students to call off stir

Presidency University Vice Chancellor Anuradha Lohia on Sunday urged a section of agitating students to immediately withdraw their stir against a disciplinary action by the varsity. Lohia met the seven students, who have been fasting since Friday to protest the December 19 notification by Presidency authorities to suspend three students for locking the gate of the university in September, during the agitation regarding accommodation at the Hindu Hostel. "This is not the way. Please withdraw your fast immediately," the VC, who came to the varsity to attend the 202nd Founders' Day programme, told the agitating students. KISS to run centres in other states and Bangladesh

The Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) that provides free education from kindergarten to post-graduation to 50,000 tribal students in Odisha, on Sunday said it would run similar centres in other states and Bangladesh. A KISS centre for poor children is expected to start functioning at Kolkata from next year, it's founder Achyuta Samanta said here Sunday. 2 engineering students go missing while taking bath in sea

Two students of an engineering college went missing while they were taking bath near Jahania Pir at Astarang in Odishas Puri district Sunday, police said. Two others were rescued from the sea by the locals. Police said the students of a Bhubaneswar-based private engineering college had gone for a picnic near the seashore at Jahania Pir of Astarang this morning. Four of them had gone to sea for bathing when they were caught in a current. The local people could rescue two of them while as many number of boys were still missing, police said. Of the two rescued boys, the condition of one was critical, police said. Fire Services personnel from Astarang have launched an operation to trace the missing students.
