Man arrested onboard a train with huge quantity of ammunition

One person was arrested here onboard a train Saturday and more than 800 live cartridges were recovered from his possession, police said. Superintendent of Railway, Muzaffarpur, Sanjay Kumar Singh said Mahfuz Alam alias Bablu was caught by a police team which was conducting security check inside the Awadh Assam Express when it reached the Muzaffarpur Junction. A resident of Musahari block in Muzaffarpur district, Bablu had given a start and tried to flee upon noticing the police party which, however, nabbed him and snatched away his bag which contained 830 live cartridges of .303 bore pistol, the Railway SP said. He said prima facie, the arrested accused was part of a gang of illegal arms and ammunition smugglers and he was being interrogated for further clues.

Dabholkar murder: 2 accused sent to CBI custody

A Pune sessions on Saturday sent Rajesh Bangera and Amit Degwekar, the two accused in the Narendra Dabholkar murder case, to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody for 10 days.On the other hand, Sachin Andure, who was arrested by the CBI on August 18 from Aurangabad, was sent to magistrate custody.Speaking to reporters here, Bangera and Digvekar's lawyer, Sameer Patvardhan, claimed that his clients were not involved in killing Dabholkar, adding that their custody should be nullified."I have mentioned in the court that the chargesheet is already submitted in the court where it is mentioned that Vinay Pawar and Sarang Akolkar are two killers. Amit Digvekar and Rajesh Bangers have no connection to the murder of Narendra Dabholkar. CJI office recommends Ranjan Gogoi's name for Chief Justice

The Chief Justice of India's office on Saturday proposed the name of Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next head of the judiciary of the country, sources told ANI.If appointed, Justice Gogoi, who is the second senior-most judge in the court, will be the 46th Chief Justice of India and will replace the incumbent Dipak Misra, who will retire on October 2 this year.As per protocol, the sitting CJI has to name his successor, after which clearance has to be sought from the central government and then the President of the country.It may be noted that Justice Gogoi, along with the other Justices Jasti Chelameswar, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph, revolted against CJI Misra, following which the apex court was thrown into its biggest ever crisis.Born in 1954, Justice Gogoi was appointed as a permanent judge of the Guwahati High Court on February 28, 2001, and was elevated as a Supreme Court judge on April 23, 2012.

June arrests in Maoists link case: Police want more time to file charge sheet

The Pune police moved a court here Saturday for extension of the 90-day-period for filing charge sheet against the five persons arrested in June for alleged Maoist links, citing fresh arrests in the case. Police arrested Sudhir Dhawale, Rona Wilson, Surendra Gadling, Shoma Sen and Mahesh Raut in June while probing the alleged Maoist connection to the Elgar Parishad conclave held in Pune on December 31 last year. Inflammatory speeches at the event led to violence at Koregaon Bhima near Pune next day, police had alleged. "The period of their judicial custody of 90 days is coming to an end on September 3. CJI Dipak Misra understood to have recommended Justice Ranjan Gogoi as successor: sources

Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra is understood to have taken a call to go by convention and recommend the name of Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who is the next in seniority to him, to succeed him as the next CJI, highly placed sources said on Saturday. The sources, however, said there is no clarity on whether the CJI has responded to the letter sent to him by the Centre to recommend the name of his successor. They said in all likelihood the government will be informed about the recommendation to appoint the next CJI soon. Justice Misra's tenure as the CJI is coming to an end on October 2. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had recently asked Justice Misra to recommend the name of his successor, setting in motion the process of change of guard in the Supreme Court. Angered by teasing, minor kills a friend

Angered by constant teasing, a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death by his minor friend in Dharavi in Central Mumbai Saturday, police said. The incident happened this afternoon in front of Vaibhav building on Dharavi main road. Rais Sayyad Khan alias Chuha was allegedly stabbed to death by a 17-year-old youth, his friend, a police official said. Khan was reportedly teasing the minor over some issue for the last two days which led to the killing, as per the preliminary probe. The accused was held by police and he is being questioned, the official said.

Men tasked to refill cash in ATMs swindle Rs 1.16 crore

The Noida Police on Saturday registered a case against some employees of a cash replenishing for allegedly swindling Rs 1.16 crore. The money was stolen over a period of two months by the accused who were entrusted with the responsibility of refilling cash in the ATMs of the city, the police said. The private firm-- Logicash Private Solutions on Friday lodged a complaint with the Noida Sector 24 police station suspecting complicity of some of its employees in the episode, Station House Officer (SHO) Pankaj Pant said. The matter came to light reportedly during an internal audit at the firm which found that the amount being transferred to the ATMs was less than what was authorised. Pant said the firm refills cash in ATMs of almost all banks including international ones in Noida, Delhi and Gurgaon. Pilgrim dies of heart attack en route Vaishno Devi cave shrine

A 58-year-old man on a pilgrimage to the cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi died of heart attack on Friday in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district. Leeladhar Patel of Madhya Pradesh collapsed at Adh Kuwari and was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, officials said. The body was handed over to his family after post-mortem, they said.

Woman strangled by live-in partner in northeast Delhi

A 32-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her live-in partner in northeast Delhi's Welcome area, the police said Saturday. A senior official said the police were informed about the incident Friday afternoon following which they rushed the victim to a hospital where she was declared brought dead. He said the couple shared a strained relationship and a personal dispute is believed to be the reason behind the killing. The accused, 35, has been absconding since the incident, the police said, adding that investigation is underway. The woman had three daughters from her previous marriage. They were not present at the house when the incident took place.

Grandfather arrested for raping grand-daughters in SGH

A 65-year-old man was arrested for repeatedly raping his two minor granddaughters, South Garo Hills district police said on Saturday. The shocking incident took place at Dimapara village in South Garo Hills district and the complaint on it was lodged by the hapless father of the two victims. One girl is aged 9 and the other 10, the complaint which was lodged on August 28 said. "We have arrested the accused after the complaint. A medical exmaination of the two girls was conducted which confirmed rape," district superintendent of police, Abraham T Sangma said. The grandfather's clan members supported him and defamed the girls, the SP said adding a police team would visit the village and take legal action against those involved if needed.

Asaram witness murder case: Another accused chargesheeted

Police have filed a charge sheet against one more accused in connection with the killing of Akhil Gupta, the prime witness in the rape case against self-styled godman Asaram, police said. The accused, who is still at large and goes by the aliases Rahul, Suraj and Ankit, was chargesheeted Friday, they said. Earlier, police initiated attachment proceedings under Section 83 of the CrPC against the accused, a resident of Sitapur, after he went absconding. Two other accused -- Kartik Haldar, who is the prime accused in the Akhil Gupta murder case, and Niraj -- are in jail and were chargesheeted earlier. Gupta was shot dead here on January 11, 2015. Meanwhile, the father of the deceased, Naresh Gupta alleged that he had provided evidence to police against Asaram for conspiring to murder Akhil, but they "did not take action".

Assam lynching: Police file charge sheet against 48 accused

The Assam Police Saturday filed a 844-page charge sheet against 48 people in the sensational mob lynching case of two youths in Karbi Anglong district in June this year. "It is a major achievement by the Assam Police that we could file the charge sheet within 90 days. It is filed against 48 persons accused of lynching two youths at Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong on June 8," Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia said at a press conference here. On June 8, two friends -- Nilotpal Das (29) and Abhijeet Nath (30)-- had gone to a picnic spot at Kangthilangso waterfalls under Dokmoka police station in Karbi Anglong. Pakistan gets first woman chief justice of high court

Justice Tahira Safdar was sworn in on Saturday as the first woman chief justice of a Pakistani high court, according to a media report. Justice Safdar was sworn in as the chief justice of Balochistan High Court at a ceremony held at the Governor House in Balochistan, the Dawn reported. She made history in 1982 when she became the first woman civil judge in Balochistan. She received her basic education from the Cantonment Public School, Quetta, and went on to complete her bachelor's degree from the Government Girls College, Quetta. Justice Safdar later earned a master's degree in Urdu literature from the University of Balochistan, as well as a degree in law from the University Law College, Quetta, in 1980. After attaining success in a competitive examination held by the Balochistan Public Service Commission, she was appointed as a senior civil judge on June 29, 1987. Man, son booked for posting objectionable pics of 3 students on social media

A man and his son have been booked for posting on social media objectionable pictures of three students, including a girl, of a private university here, police said on Saturday. The booked duo have been identified as Yatin Bedi and his father Jaswinder Bedi of Haibowal Kalan in Ludhiana, they said. The complainants were the girl and two male students of the same university, police said. It was alleged that objectionable pictures of the complainants were uploaded on social media, including Facebook and Instagram using fake IDs in order to defame them, a police official said. Activists case: Retired judges, lawyers slam cops for 'revealing evidence'

Some retired judges and senior lawyers criticised the Maharashtra police Saturday for revealing before the media the evidence collected as part of its investigation into alleged Maoist links of some Left-wing activists arrested earlier this week. However, a few others from the legal fraternity noted that there are no rules on whether or not the police should reveal documents in a case. Vigilance nabs ASI while accepting bribe of Rs 10,000

The Vigilance Investigation Bureau Saturday caught an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 in Bihar's Kaimur district, a release said. Vigilance sleuths arrested Mohammad Rashid Khan, ASI with Mohania police station in Kaimur district, while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 for helping the complainant in a criminal case, the release said. A resident of Tekari village had lodged a complaint with the vigilance bureau that Khan was demanding bribe of Rs 10,000 for helping him in a criminal case lodged with Mohania police station. The complaint was verified by the bureau which found the allegations to be true after which a team was constituted under Deputy Superintendent of Police Gopal Paswan who raided and arrested the ASI while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from his rented accommodation located in Shivpur area in Kaimur district.

Guj: 2 arrested with 5 kg charas worth Rs 50 lakh in Jamnagar

Two persons have been arrested and five kilograms of charas (cannabis) worth around Rs 50 lakh in the international market has been seized, police said Saturday. In a joint operation conducted Friday by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Jamnagar police's Crime Branch, a man identified as Arun Manjare was nabbed near Subhash vegetable market here, police said in a press release. The Ahmedabad zonal unit of NCB, in a press statement, informed that a receiver, identified as Mamad Ali Mandalia, had also been arrested along with Manjare. "Acting on a tip-off, the city LCB (Local Crime Branch) and NCB officials held Arun Manjare, who hails from Pune in Maharashtra. He was in possession of five kilograms of charas worth around Rs 50 lakh in the international markets," the Jamnagar police release said.
