Moscow court prolongs detention of Ukraine sailors

A Moscow court on Monday upheld extending the arrest of 24 Ukrainian sailors seized by Russia off Crimea last year, defying an international tribunal that had urged their immediate release. The Moscow City Court declined an appeal against the extension of the sailors' detention until July, filed by their lawyers. Russia in November fired on and seized three Ukrainian navy vessels, capturing two dozen sailors near the Kerch Strait, as they tried to pass from the Black Sea to the Azov Sea. It was the first open military clash between Kiev and Moscow since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and a pro-Russian insurgency erupted in eastern Ukraine. On Saturday, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, based in the German port city of Hamburg, urged Russia to "immediately" release the sailors and return them to Ukraine. K'taka govt grants SIT probing Gauri Lankesh murder Rs 25L cash reward

Government of Karnataka on Monday sanctioned a cash reward of Rs 25 lakh to the members of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh.The cash reward has been given to the team for the successful detection and meticulous investigation.The SIT probing the killing of Lankesh, on November 24, named Sanatan Sansthan in its additional charge sheet filed before a city court. The SIT also said that the 18 accused in the case are active members of an organised crime syndicate.According to the SIT, the members of the syndicate strictly followed the guidelines and principles mentioned in the book 'Kshatradharma Sadhana'.Sanatan Sanstha has, however, rubbished the SIT's allegations in connection with the murder case.Lankesh, a senior journalist, was murdered in her residence in Bengaluru on September 5, 2017.

Woman posing as crime branch officer arrested for duping people

A 34-year-woman was arrested from West Delhi's Punjabi Bagh area for allegedly impersonating as a crime branch official and duping people, police said Monday. The woman, a resident of Madipur here, was arrested on May 25, a day after one of her victims filed a police complaint, they said. In her complaint, the victim said that she used to work at a call centre in Meera Bagh area. However, she left her job some two months ago and a few days later, she got a call from a woman, the accused, claiming to be a crime branch officer, police said. The accused alleged that she has received a complaint of cheating against the woman from a few employees of the call centre where she used to work previously, a senior police officer said. The "fake officer" told the victim that she could settle the matter by paying her Rs 2.5 lakh. Fearing the consequences, the victim arranged for the money and give it to the accused person, the officer added. A few days later, the victim again received a call from .

UP: Denied ambulance, mother forced to carry body of her child home

A shocking incident has come to the fore in Shahjahanpur, where a woman was forced to carry the body of her child home as no ambulance was provided to them.Speaking to ANI, the deceased's father said his child was taken to a hospital here earlier today after he was diagnosed with high fever."We took our child to the hospital in the morning. The doctors told us to take him elsewhere for treatment. We asked them for a vehicle but they refused. There were three ambulances parked in the premises. I do not know why we were denied one," he claimed.As the parents of the deceased had no money, they began walking carrying their child. Shell cos list: SAT quashes BSE's order against SVC Industries

The Securities Appellate Tribunal Monday quashed BSE's order against SVC Industries rejecting the firm's plea seeking its removal from list of suspected shell companies. "...the impugned order passed by the BSE cannot be sustained and is quashed," the tribunal said in an order. Besides, the tribunal directed Sebi and BSE not to place the firm in the category of a shell company or place it in GSM (Graded Surveillance Mechanism) Stage VI. "It is however open to Sebi or BSE to take such action in accordance with Sebi Act or its regulations for placing the appellant (SVC Industries) in GSM Stage or to compulsory delist the company", among others, but such action could be initiated only in accordance with the law, the tribunal noted. In August 2017, SVC Industries had filed an application to the BSE, requesting it to remove the firm from suspected shell companies list and also from GSM Stage VI. The exchange in March 2018 rejected the application, following which SVC Industries approached .

Bangladeshi nationals detained in Ahmedabad for illegal stay

Ahead of Rathyatra in Ahmedabad, Special Operations Group (SOG) Monday detained 47 Bangladeshi nationals from various parts of the city for illegal stay, police said. The Ahmedabad SOG had formed five different teams to carry out a search operation, as per an official statement. Patrolling was conducted in different areas of the city during which as many as 47 Bangladeshis were detained from areas including Chandola lake in Ishanpur, Danilimda, Chirag Park Society, Naroda Patiya, Juna Wadaj etc, and brought to SOG police station, it said. They were detained as they were found to be staying illegally in the city without any valid documents. Police are probing if the detainees were involved in any illegal activity. The Rathyatra or the chariot procession is held in the name of Lord Jagannath in June/July every year.

UP ATS nabs six Bangladeshis for getting passports using fake documents

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) has arrested six Bangladeshi nationals from Agra for allegedly preparing fake identity documents for other illegal immigrants to help them get passports, an official said on Monday. "The UP ATS was getting information that some Bangladeshis, living illegally in Uttar Pradesh, used to call other Bangladeshis and make fake documents (used for identity) such as Aadhaar cards and ration cards. They used to get their passports made," Asim Arun, UP ATS Additional Director General of Police, said in a statement. He added that the six Bangladeshi nationals were picked up from the Agra railway station on Sunday. "During interrogation, it was revealed that all of them were residents of Bangladesh, who were living in India on the basis of fake documents. Haryana Police on Monday arrested a Polish national named Patryak from Gurugram and recovered 345 grams of opium and 4.285 kg charas from his possession.Patryak allegedly failed to produce a passport and Visa upon interrogation."A team of DLF Phase-1 police station, during patrolling, spotted two suspicious youth, who suddenly started run away after seeing police. Arrest of two youths sparks protest in J-K's Bhadarwah

Activists of the BJP and other right-wing groups Monday staged a protest here to press for the release of two youths who were picked up by police for their alleged involvement in a recent stone pelting incident, officials said. The youths, a barbar and an auto-rickshaw driver, were arrested by police Monday afternoon after their involvement was established in connection with the May 16 violence in the communally sensitive town following the murder of Naeem Ahmad Shah, a cattle trader, in a firing incident, they said. Crime Branch officials have arrested a 37-year-old history sheeter wanted in connection with extortion, an official said Monday. The accused, identified as Sachin alias Babu Shankar Mohite, was picked up on May 25 by Unit -10 of crime branch from Marol in Andheri. Man shot at over property dispute, one held

A 30-year-old man was Monday shot at and injured apparently over a property dispute in suburban Mankhurd, following which one person has been arrested, police said. The incident occurred around 5.30 am at Zakir Hussain Nagar when the victim, Abbas Shaikh, a resident of the neighbouring Palghar district, came to his friend's house here, a police official said. After they came to know about Shaikh's presence, three men, with whom Shaikh is having some dispute over a property in Raigad district, reached the residence of his friend and one of them allegedly fired three bullets at Shaikh from a country-made pistol, he said. Man dies after jumping from balcony of Bawana police station, family alleges he was beaten up

A 58-year-old man died after he allegedly jumped from the balcony of the third floor of the Bawana police station, where he was called for questioning regarding the whereabouts of his son, officials said Monday. The deceased's son -- Rahul -- is involved in two cases of attempted murder as well as in another case of murder and has been declared an absconder by a city court, they said. The deceased has been identified as Balraj, a resident of Bajitpur Thakran near Bawana, the officials said. His family alleged that he was beaten up at the police station and might have died of the physical assault. Police, however, denied the allegations.
