The Assam police have arrested five persons for their involvement in the grenade blast on Thursday that left six people injured in state capital Guwahati.
A 22-year-old labourer has been handed a 20-year rigorous imprisonment by a sessions court in Vasai in Palghar district of Maharashtra for raping a four-year-old girl in 2016. Additional Sessions Judge Rahul Bhosale convicted the accused, Suresh Mukne, under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and under section 366 A (procuration of a minor girl) of the Indian Penal Code on May 16. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 16,000 on him, Additional Public Prosecutor Kadambini Khandagale said Saturday. Mukne had abducted the girl from Phulpada locality in suburban Virar on the morning of August 29, 2016. He then took her to a dilapidated bungalow where he sexually assaulted her, said Khandagale. Mukne was arrested and a chargesheet was filed against him. During arguments, the judge dismissed the defence's plea seeking leniency for Mukne, saying that the offence has been proved against him.
Two men have been arrested here along with 36 grams of heroin, police said Saturday. They have been identified as Bengia Rigia (20), son of People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) chief Kahfa Bengia, and Sosar Punung, brother-in-law of Congress's Palin constituency candidate Takam Pario, officials said. While 31 grams of heroin have been found from Sosar, police said they seized 5 grams of the drugs from Bengia. A team was formed to check drug peddling in the city and on prior inputs a probe was started and the duo was arrested, Superintent of Police (Capital) Tume Amo said. Sosar Punung was arrested from a government quarter at Vivek Vihar area of city and Bengia was arrested from his house in Mowb-II area, the officer said. Police said they have also seized 58 long and 42 small plastic tubes used to sell drugs.

A BSP MLA has allegedly received an extortion letter demanding Rs 22 crore from him, police said Saturday. Ramveer Upadhyay, who is an MLA from Sadabad and a former UP minister, registered a complaint on Friday that he received a letter demanding Rs 22 crore as 'rangdaari' (extortion), Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Siddhartha Verma said. The letter received on Wednesday also threatened to abduct a minor member of Upadhyay's family in case the demand was not met, the ASP said. A case has been registered and the matter is being probed, he said.
A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth here and the accused has been arrested, police said Saturday. A family lodged a written complaint at police station Janipur Friday, alleging Karan Singh, a resident of Shivalik Puram, allegedly abducted their minor daughter and raped her in captivity, a police official said. He said police lodged an FIR against the accused under various sections of Ranbir Penal Code, including 363 (kidnapping), 343 (wrongful confinement) and 376 (rape) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The medical examination of the girl was also conducted and she was later handed over to the family, the official said, adding the accused was arrested and further investigation is on. A man was Saturday arrested in Gujarat's Surat district for allegedly paying Rs 10 lakh to two people and getting his father killed, police said. According to the Crime Branch, Jitesh Patel was upset with his father Prahlad Patel (70) for the last eight months for taking away business responsibilities. A Crime Branch release said that the accused then decided to the kill his father to inherit a plastic granule factory and a powerloom unit. It said Prahlad Patel was killed in the factory premises and his body buried there on May 14 by two persons hired by Jignesh. "Jitesh contacted accused Salim Sheikh, a flour mill worker, and offered him Rs 10 lakh to get Prahlad killed. Salim then contacted Sanjay Tukaram Ramrajya," an official said. Three minor girls were raped in different parts of Rajasthan, including in Alwar where the victim's family lynched one of the three accused, the police said on Saturday. The girl, aged about 15 years, was allegedly gangraped by three minors on May 14 in Hasraura village under Sadar Police Station of Alwar where she had gone to attend a relative's marriage. "While one of the accused managed to flee, the other two were caught by the victims' family members and thrashed the next morning... Few hours later, one of them was found dead on the roadside," SP Paris Anil Deshmukh said. "The victim's family and the deceased have lodged separate FIRs. Her mother registered an FIR against the three accused, the family members of the deceased registered a case of murder against the girl's brother and others," he added. Five alleged bovine smugglers were arrested Saturday as nearly two dozen animals which were being illegally transported in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir were rescued, police said. Five vehicles, carrying bovine animals without permission, were intercepted during surprise checking at various places on Thanamandi-Surankote road in the wee hours, a police official said. "All the five drivers have been arrested and a total of 22 animals were rescued during the operation," he said. He said the five vehicles were seized and the arrested smugglers were booked under relevant sections of law.
Police on Saturday filed a chargesheet against the accused in the Alwar gang-rape case in a court here. A CRPF jawan, deployed at the residence of former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi here, allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself from his service revolver, police said Saturday. Giriayappa Kirasoor (29), a constable with 122 battalion of the CRPF, shot himself dead at the RJD leader's high-security Circular Road bungalow on Friday, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Secretariat) A K Prabhakar said. In a horrendous incident, a man was shot at by unknown assailants in Rohini Sector-11.Manish, a resident of Kheda Khurd village was travelling in an Accent car with his friends when a Swift car overtook their car and some unknown persons came out of the latter car and started firing indiscriminately.Manish ran for his life but was allegedly hit by four bullets. A two-year-old girl died and three others were injured when the two-wheeler they were travelling on was hit by an MLA's car in the district Saturday, police said. The incident occurred this morning when the family was going to an Anganvadi centre at Jeeduvaagu village when the SUV belonging to Mulugu constituency MLA, Seethakka knocekd down their two-wheeler, they said. While the girl died on the spot, her parents and sister suffered minor injuries, they added. Seethakka rushed the injured to the hospital and consoled the victim's parents.
