Court allows CBI to withdraw plea seeking permission to further probe Bofors deal

In the midst of election rhetoric over corruption in the Bofors gun deal, a special court here on Thursday allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to withdraw its application seeking permission to further probe the Rs 64-crore payoff in the contract.Petitions were filed by the CBI and advocate Ajay Aggarwal for further probe into the politically sensitive deal.However, the probe agency on Thursday informed the Rouse Avenue court that it wanted to withdraw the application.Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Naveen Kashyap, while allowing the CBI to withdraw the application, questioned Aggarwal's locus standi in the matter.Aggarwal also said that he wanted to take back his plea after which permission was granted by the court.The next hearing in the matter will be on July 6.Earlier, the CMM had asked as to "why does the CBI need the court's permission to proceed with further investigation in the matter" and directed the probe agency to place on record case laws to show that it ...

HC upholds man's sentence for raping, trafficking minor girl

The Bombay High Court has upheld the conviction and 10-year sentence awarded to a 28-year-old man for raping and forcing a minor girl into prostitution, observing that the accused ruined the victim's life. Justice Sadhana Jadhav dismissed the appeal filed by the convict, Arabali Ashraf Mulla, a resident of West Bengal, challenging a trial court's order of March 2015 convicting and sentencing him to 10 years in jail. Mulla was held guilty under various Indian Penal Code sections, including rape, and provisions of the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act. According to the prosecution, in November 2011, Mulla lured the victim, who was then 15, out of her home in West Bengal and later married her. He then brought her to Dongri area in Mumbai and later took her to a couple's house where she was forced into prostitution. Man beaten to death by wife and in-laws in Shamli

A 31-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his wife and in-laws over a family dispute in neighbouring Shamli district and his body was dumped in a drain, police said. Harish was killed on Wednesday in Khedi Karmu village under Kotwali police station area in the district, Station House Officer (SHO) Subhash Rathore said. A case of murder has been registered against four persons and the victim's wife Shivani along with a relative Shivam was arrested, the SHO said. According to a complaint lodged by the deceased's mother, Harish had gone to his in-laws house in the village to attend a wedding function where he was killed by the four accused after a confrontation over a family dispute. Mathura: 7-year-old mauled to death by stray dogs, authorities pressed into action

Gram panchayat, forest department as well as tehsil officials were pressed into action after a pack of stray dogs in Barsana town here mauled a seven-year-old girl to death on Sunday.Speaking to ANI, Ashok Kumar Meena, SP Crime, said, "Gram panchayat, forest dept and tehsil have been directed to catch the stray dogs. All pradhans and villagers have been asked not to leave their kids alone."However, Kalicharan, the village chief, informed that no administrative officer has come to investigate the matter yet.Seven-year-old Devika was going to her father Bhupsinh with food when she was attacked by the dogs. The incident took place only a few miles away from her house.The dogs had already killed the minor girl by the time villagers arrived at the site. The girl was found after a few children passing by the same route saw half a dozen dogs devour over a body on the way.

Govt to soon come out with format to lodge complaints with Lokpal

The central government will soon come out with a format for lodging a complaint with anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal, officials said Thursday. As per norms, a complaint shall be filed in the prescribed form to be notified by the central government. "The form will be made public soon," a senior Personnel Ministry official said. Although the form for filing a complaint has not yet been notified, Lokpal decided to scrutinise all the complaints received in its the office till April 16, 2019, in whatever form they were sent, according to the anti-corruption ombudsman's website which was inaugurated Thursday. "After scrutiny, complaints that did not fall within the mandate of the Lokpal were disposed off and complainants are being informed accordingly," it said, without giving details of the complaints. Maha: Man gives 'triple talaq' to wife via WhatsApp, booked

A 28-year-old man and his parents have been booked by the Thane police in Maharashtra after he allegedly divorced his wife by sending a 'triple talaq' message on her mobile phone, an official said on Thursday. The 25-year-old woman, in her complaint lodged last week, said she got married to a man from Kalyan town here on May 18, 2014 and that they have a four-year-old son, Bhoiwada police station's inspector Kalyan Karpe said. Two men arrested for stealing cash and jewellery from a house in south Delhi

Two men have been arrested for stealing cash and jewellery from a house in south Delhi's Gautam Nagar, police said Thursday. The accused identified as Vinay Mavi (31) and Kamal (48) were arrested from Gautam Nagar on Tuesday, they said. The incident took place on April 20 after the complainant and his wife left for office at around 9 AM, police said. According to complainant, at about 5 pm, when he returned, the lock of the main door of his house was found replaced. Man killed in Maha, accused held while trying to dispose body

A construction labourer was allegedly killed by his colleague who was caught while trying to dump the body in a creek in Palghar district of Maharashtra to hide the crime, a police official said on Thursday. The accused, Ramnaresh Nishad, and the victim, Pradeep Nishad, both from Uttar Pradesh and working as labourers at a rail bridge construction site in Dahanu here, had an argument over some issue on Tuesday night at their workplace, he said. The accused, in a fit of anger, allegedly hit the victim with an iron pipe, killing him on the spot, the official at Dahanu police station said. He then tried to throw the body in a nearby creek but the construction site supervisor caught him and alerted the police about the incident, he said. The accused was subsequently arrested and booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), he added.

SC seeks response from Centre, CBSE on plea seeking 10% reservation for EWS in CTET 2019

The Supreme Court Thursday sought responses from the Centre and CBSE on a plea seeking ten per cent reservation for economically weaker sections in Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), 2019. A vacation bench comprising justices Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna issued notices to the Centre and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on the plea and asked them to respond to it by July 1, the next date of hearing. The court was hearing a plea by some petitioners belonging to economically weaker sections and planning to appear in CTET 2019. The petitioners told the apex court that CBSE published an advertisement on January 23, 2019 for conducting CTET in which benefit of ten per cent reservation has not been given to candidates belonging to economically weaker sections of society.

Two accused in killing and kidnapping cases in Madhya Pradesh have been nabbed by the Thane police in Maharashtra, an official said Thursday.
