Man kills girlfriend before committing suicide in Jammu

A 24-year-old man allegedly killed his girlfriend before committing suicide inside his house, police said Sunday. Rakesh Kumar (24) and Shalu Devi (25), both neighbours, were found dead inside the house at Bishnah on Saturday, they said. Kumar's body was found hanging from the ceiling of his room, while the body of the woman was lying nearby with stab injuries, police said. Preliminary investigation suggests that the two were in a relationship and had a scuffle over some issue following which Kumar stabbed the woman before hanging himself, police said. The man used to work as a salesman at a shop in the locality. Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.

Couple crushed to death by speeding truck in Munger

A couple was crushed to death by a speeding truck in Bihar's Munger district on Sunday, a senior police officer said. A speeding truck crushed the couple to death near Fajeliganj village while they were on morning walk, Munger, Superintendent of Police, Gaurav Mangla said. The deceased have been identified as Ranjan Kumar (30) and his wife Anju Devi (25), he said. Kumar, a jawan in the Army was posted at Dehradun and had come to his village Fajeliganj on leave, the SP said.

3 arrested after woman alleges gangrape

Police Sunday arrested three persons from the district after a 23-year-old woman alleged they abducted and raped her. The three accused -- Shubam, Gaurav and Atul -- were arrested in connection with the gangrape case at a village under Mansurpur police station in the district. Police said the woman has alleged that she was abducted and gangeraped on February 22.

Businessman shot dead in Patna

A businessman was shot dead by unidentified persons here, a senior police officer said Sunday. Purushottam Kumar, 50, owner of a cake shop was dead by unidentified persons on Saturday evening, Senior Superintendent of Police, Garima Mallik said. The incident happened near Surya apartment on Fraser road at around 7:30 pm when Kumar was on way to his shop located on new Dakbungalow road, Mallik said. Police rushed the businessman to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) where doctors declared him brought dead. Police have recovered a cartridge, an empty cartridge and the deceased's bike from the spot, police said. Police are investigating the matter from all angles, the SSP said adding that prima facie it does not seem to be the case of property offence.

Centre superintendent, 14 invigilators arrested for aiding mass copying during board exam in UP

The superintendent of an exam centre and 14 invigilators are among 17 people arrested here for allegedly aiding mass copying during Class 12th Physics paper, authorities have said. Besides, two private individuals have also been arrested but no student is apprehended, they said. District Magistrate Ajay Shanker Pandey told newsmen Sunday a police case has been registered against the 17 arrested and that a recommendation has been sent to the examination board to cancel Saturday's Physics board paper at the centre. He said an inquiry has been ordered and Chief Development Officer (CDO) Arachna Verma will conduct the probe. He said all the staff deployed at the centre during the Physics exam have been changed. A probe has been ordered against the sector magistrate (an examination officer who looks after multiple centres) and station (or centre) magistrate as well. Muzaffarnagar: Woman allegedly gang-raped, 2 arrested

A woman has been allegedly gang-raped by five men in Mansoorpur area of the district.The 22-year-old victim was going to purchase fertilizers for her farm when she was picked by one of the accused who later allegedly raped her along with his friends in a secluded area.The woman narrated her ordeal to her relatives who registered a case in this regard.SSP Sudhir Kumar Singh said, "An incident of rape was brought to our notice from Mansurpur area. Judge sets R Kelly's bond at $1 million

R&B singer R. Kelly's bond was set at USD 1 million by a Chicago judge on Saturday (local time) after he was arrested and indicted on 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse against four alleged victims.The singer's lawyer, Steve Greenberg, welcomed the judge's decision, noting that it seems "fair and reasonable given the allegations," reports CNN."Right now he's presumed innocent. Singer R Kelly gets USD 1 million bail

A US judge set a USD 1 million bail for R&B superstar R Kelly on Saturday after prosecutors laid out in graphic detail what they said was his long history of sexual abuse of four victims, three of them minors. Kelly, who is known for hits like "I Believe I Can Fly," surrendered to police late Friday. Six of seven girls found hours after fleeing shelter home in Bihar

Seven minor girls escaped from a care unit at Mokama town in rural Patna in the early hours of Saturday following which six of them were found in Darbhanga district, police said. Darbhanga Senior Superintendent of Police Babu Ram said, "Six of the minor girls were found in Gangauli village under the Sakatpur police station area late in the evening". He said a police team had come from Patna district in search of the missing girls based on the inputs they had gathered during investigation. One of the girls belonged to Gangauli village. The girl, along with five others, was found at the village and the visiting police team has taken them into custody for interrogation, the SSP said. Man burnt alive by family of girl he loved

A 21-year-old man was allegedly burnt alive by the family members of a girl he loved in West Bengal's East Midnapur district, police said Saturday. The family allegedly beat up Ranjit Mondal entire Friday night before pouring petrol on him and setting him on fire, police said. Ranjit had gone to meet the girl when the incident occurred. He was a goldsmith in Delhi. The incident came to light when the local police found out that something was burning in an open space around 3.30 am Saturday. Ranjit's elder brother Surajit lodged an FIR with the Bhupatinagar police station following which the girl, her parents, brother and three others were detained. Police recovered Ranjit's mobile phone from the spot and seized some of his articles from the girl's home. Ranjit used to stay with his maternal uncle nearby for several years after his mother's death and father's remarriage.

Bookie killed for refusing to pay protection money in Haryana

A Gurgaon-based bookie was shot dead allegedly by members of the dreaded Kaushal gang for refusing to pay protection money, police said Saturday. The body of Vijay Batra was found in a car with bullet injuries in his head and abdomen on Friday night, a police officer said. His family alleged that the Kaushal gang had been sending him threatening messages and calls on WhatsApp from the last five months, demanding protection money. DCP (Crime) Himanshu Garg said Batra, a resident of city's upscale Park View residential complex, had gone to Rajiv Chowk for meeting an acquaintance when he was killed. "We have set up five teams to nab the accused," Garg said.

Seven girls flee shelter home in Bihar; oppn cry 'conspiracy'

Seven minor girls - five of them said to be former inmates of the Muzaffarpur shelter home which got embroiled in sex scandal - escaped from a care unit at Mokama town in rural Patna in the early hours of Saturday. Opposition parties flayed the NDA government in Bihar, alleging that five of the girls were "witnesses" in the sex scandal being probed by the CBI under the supervision of the Supreme Court, and claimed their escape was a "conspiracy" hatched by the ruling dispensation to protect "big shots". "Seven girls have escaped from the shelter home. They are said to have fled after cutting the grill of a window at about 3 am. Teenaged boy drowns in swimming pool

A teenaged boy allegedly drowned in a swimming pool at a facility at Rajendranagar area here, police said Saturday. The boy, aged between 15 to 16 years, had gone to the pool with his friends on Friday, but a caretaker told them to leave as it was beyond the stipulated time, police said. His friends then took a shower and left, but came back after they found him missing and found his body in the pool. CCTV footage showed that the boy had ventured into the swimming pool alone and drowned at a spot where the depth was more, police said. A case of negligence was registered against the owner of the swimming pool and the person who took it on lease on a complaint from the boy's father, police said.

Maha professor demands sexual favours from collegian; held

A 30-year-old chemistry professor of a south Mumbai college was arrested for allegedly demanding sexual favours from his student, police said. In her complaint, the 19-year-old collegian has alleged that the accused had said he would pass her in the exams as well as take care of her attendance issues in return for sexual favours, police said. The accused works at the college on a contract basis, police said. The teen approached Gamdevi police station following which the professor was arrested Friday night under section 354 (outraging modesty of woman) of the Indian Penal Code, Inspector Gokulsinh Patil of Gamdevi police station said.

Kushinagar hooch tragedy: Police arrests 4th accused

Another accused in the hooch tragedy in neighbouring Kushinagar district was arrested on Saturday, before he could flee to bordering Nepal, police said. Doodhnath, who had been on the run since nine people died after consuming spurious liquor in Tarya Sujan police station area earlier this month, carried a cash reward of Rs 50,000 and is the fourth accused to be arrested by police in connection with the deaths. SP, Kushinagar, Rajeev Mishra said the arrest was made following a tip off from informers. Locals claimed that Doodhnath was actively involved in supplying spurious liquor, police said. Earlier, police had arrested co-accused Rajendra Jaiswal and Hari Nishad, both from Kushinagar. A third person, Harindra Yadav, was held on February 16 from Rajasthan.

Man arrested for killing wife on suspicion of having extra-marital relationship

A man was arrested for allegedly killing his wife by hitting her on the head with a stone on Saturday following a quarrel as he suspected she was in an extra-marital relationship, police said. Juman Singh, 32, killed his wife Puja, 30, on suspicion of her having an illicit relationship with another man. He hit the wife with a heavy stone outside his house, SHO Kho Nagorian police station Virendra Singh said. The body was handed over to family members after post-mortem. A case of murder has been registered against Singh, he said.
