Editors Guild condemns arrest of journalists

The Editors Guild Sunday condemned the arrest of a journalist, and the editor and head of a television channel over alleged objectionable content related to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, describing the police actionas an "authoritarian misuse of laws" andan effort to intimidate the press. An FIR was registered against Noida based journalist Prashant Kanojia at Hazratganj police station in Lucknow on Friday night in which it was alleged that the accused made "objectionable comments against the CM and tried to malign his image." Kanojia had shared a video on Twitter and Facebook where a woman is seen speaking to reporters of various media organisations outside the CM office claiming that she had sent a marriage proposal to the CM. Two absconders arrested in Samba

Two absconders, who were wanted in cases of breach of peace and endangering life of others, have been arrested from Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, police said Sunday. Bihari Lal, alias Kaki, and Surinder Kumar, alias Sindha, were evading arrest for the past one year and were nabbed in separate operations by a police team in Vijaypur area on Saturday, they said. The accused were wanted in separate cases registered under sections 504 (breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 336 (endangering life of others) of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) registered with Vijaypur police, officials said.

Tribal woman from Rajasthan raped in MP, dies

A 20-year-old tribal woman, who was allegedly raped and administered a poisonous substance by a youth in Madjya Pradesh, died at a hospital in Rajasthan's Baran district, police said Sunday. Four women from the Rajasthan's Kanjar tribe had gone to Madhya Pradesh's Guna town to perform at a private programme on Friday, they said. Two of them were taken by two youths to a forested area from the bus stand. One of the women was raped, police said. The youths dropped the women at the Ruthiyai railway station near Guna on Friday night and they returned by train to Baran on Saturday morning, they said. The victim was admitted to a hospital in Baran in a semi-unconscious state and she died on Saturday. The body was handed over to her family later that afternoon, police said. Child's murder: 5 detained in Aligarh for flouting prohibitory orders

30-year-old man stabbed to death in Jammu

A 30-year old man has been stabbed to death by unknown persons in the border area of Arnia here, police said Sunday. Moti Lal, alias Toni, son of Bodh Raj from Kather village in Arnia, was stabbed at his shop in Kather on Saturday night, a senior officer said. Lal was shifted to the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital in Jammu where he succumbed to injuries, he said. Bihar passengers beaten up in Bengal over regional identity

One killed as car falls into ditch in UP

A man was killed after his car fell into a 10-foot-deep ditch in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district, police said Sunday. The incident took place on Saturday night, when Rohit Sahu (19), a resident of Jaunpur, was returning after attending a marriage function here, they said. Sahu was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. He lost control over the car at Modh area of the district, following which the vehicle fell into a 10-foot-deep ditch, the police said. Man shot dead in Supaul

Unidentified miscreants have shot dead a man near Gonaha Itwa chowk under Triveniganj police station of Bihar's Supaul district, police said on Sunday. The incident occurred when the person was on his way to his in-law's house at Gajahar village on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Shiv Kumar Mehta (30), a resident of Nonpar Vaisa village, Superintendent of Police Mrityunjay Kumar Choudhary said. Maha: Man killed in clash between two groups in Akola

A man was killed after two groups clashed in Akot File area of Maharashtra's Akola district, police said Sunday. An official said two groups clashed with sharp weapons near Abdul Hamid Chowk at around 10:30 pm Saturday in which Sheikh Sikander Sheikh Yousuf (30) sustained serious injuries and died while undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. "Two persons, identified as Rehan Quereshi and Shaikh Saleem alias Bally, have been arrested and charged with murder. Man held for killing brother in Maharashtra

A 40-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his younger brother in Palghar district of Maharashtra, a police official said on Sunday. The accused, Ravish Sambre, was annoyed with his brother Sharad Sambre (35) over some petty issue, he said. While the victim and his wife were walking towards their home in Wada taluka here on Saturday, the accused, in a fit of anger, hit him with a wooden log, killing him on the spot, the official said. The deceased's wife lodged a complaint following which the accused was arrested and booked under Indian Penal Code Section 302 (murder), he said, adding that a probe was underway into the incident.

Minor girl raped, killed in Bhopal

The body of an eight-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped, was found near a drain here in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, a police official said. Preliminary investigation revealed that she died of strangulation after being raped, he said. The girl had ventured out of her house in Kamla Nagar area of the state capital around 8 pm on Saturday to buy something. Cloth trader shot dead in central Delhi, probe underway

History-sheeter held from Dwarka: Police

A 49-year-old man, allegedly involved in six cases, was arrested from Dwarka, police said on Sunday. The accused, Mukesh Malik, a resident of Palam's Sadh Nagar, was involved in six cases including those of robbery, attempt to commit culpable homicide and related to offences under the Arms Act, they added. Malik was registered as a "Bad Character" at the Palam Village police station and was evading arrest for over six years in a case of robbery, the police said. According to the police, the accused was involved in a case of robbery registered at the Sagar Pur police station. After getting bail, he did not join the trial and hence, was declared a proclaimed offender by the Patiala House court, a senior police officer said. Malik sold his house in Palam in 2013 and abstained himself from facing the trial since then, he added. The accused was arrested from sector 12, Dwarka on Friday, the police said.

7-yr-old boy sodomised by juvenile in UP's Muzaffarnagar
