Six injured in stone-pelting during clash

At least six persons were injured in stone-pelting during a clash between two groups over a minor dispute at Shernagar village in this district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Sunday. The incident took place on Saturday evening at Shernagar village under the New Mandi police station, they added. Two men -- Rashid and Temur -- got into a confrontation over car parking, which turned into a violent clash after others joined the melee, the police said. The two groups hurled stones at each other, resulting in injuries to at least six persons, they added. A case was registered and five persons were arrested in connection with the incident, the police said.

UP Police arrest Delhi man for 'objectionable' comments against Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Police arrested a man on Saturday for making certain 'objectionable comments' against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on social media and for 'spreading rumours'.The case is registered at Hazratganj Police Station Lucknow. "The arrest was made on the basis of evidence and after strict interrogation, he confessed to his crime," said a press note from the Lucknow Police.He is booked under IPC section 500 (defamation), 505 (statements conducing to public mischief), and section 67 of Information Technology Act (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form).The accused is identified as Prashant Kanojia, who lives in Delhi and had allegedly uploaded a video on Twitter in which a woman is heard making some claims about Adityanath. Russian scribe charged for attempted selling of drugs

A Moscow court on Saturday charged a Russian investigative journalist for attempted large-scale sale of drugs, according to the scribe's lawyer."I did not commit any crimes, and I am ready to help the investigation. I have no relation to drugs and I have never used them," TASS quoted Ivan Golunov, a special correspondent for the independent news site Meduza, as saying during a hearing in Nikulinsky District Court.According to the police, Golunov was detained at his residence in downtown Moscow on June 6. Tanker runs over, kills 2 on Mumbai footpath

Two women were killed while a child sustained grievous injuries after an oil tanker ran over them here in Vikhroli area on Saturday.Police said the women and child were sleeping on the footpath opposite Timbuctoo hotel in the suburb when the incident took place.According to the police, at around 9:30 PM on Saturday, the driver of an oil tanker lost control while parking and collided with another oil tanker parked on the same street, due to which the trio, who was sleeping on the footpath, came under the wheels.The two women died on the spot, police said, and the injured child was taken to a hospital for treatment.The tankers are in possession of the police, and investigation in the matter is underway.

Three quarry labourers dead in Odisha

At least three labourers, including a woman, were killed and another suffered serious injuries in a landslide at a murram quarry in Odisha's Keonjhar district on Saturday, police said. "Four persons were engaged in digging the quarry, and three are dead and one critical," said Keonjhar Town police Inspector-in-Charge, Somanath Jena. The incident took place when a portion of the quarry caved in and fell on the labourers at Tulasichaura village, he said. The injured labourer, also a woman, is undergoing treatment at hospital.

TV channel head, editor arrested for airing defamatory content against UP CM: Police

The head of a private television news channel and its editor were arrested here Saturday for allegedly broadcasting defamatory content against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, police said. During a debate on the channel on June 6, a woman had allegedly made defamatory statements against Adityanath, the police said. Workers affiliated to a political party had approached the police with a complaint against the news channel for broadcasting the claims of the woman without verifying facts, a senior official said. "This could have led to a possible law and order situation," Senior Superintendent of Police, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Vaibhav Krishna said. Bihar engineer caught red-handed while taking bribe, valuables seized in raid at his house

An engineer employed with the Bihar government was on Saturday arrested while taking a bribe of Rs 14 lakh by the vigilance department, which also conducted a raid at his residence from where cash and documents relating to properties owned by him were seized. According to Deputy SP (Vigilance) Gopal Paswan, Suresh Prasad Singh, an executive engineer with the Public Works Department, was caught red-handed along with a clerk of his department, Shashi Bhushan Prasad, in Patna. He said a complaint was received from Akhilesh Prasad Jaiswal, a contractor, that for release of payments for a road construction project the two officials had demanded a bribe of Rs 32 lakh. "We laid a trap as part of which Jaiswal agreed to pay Rs 14 lakh as an instalment of the bribe at the assigned time and place from where the two officials were caught red-handed," the officer said. Scribe arrested for 'objectionable' social media post against UP CM Adityanath

A journalist has been arrested for allegedly sharing an objectionable post against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on social media, police said. An FIR was registered against Prashant Kanojia by sub-inspector Vikas Kumar at Hazratganj police station on Friday night in which it was alleged that the accused made "objectionable comments against the CM and tried to malign his image". When contacted by PTI, a senior police official initially said that the journalist has been arrested. But he later clarified that no arrest has yet taken place. Later, the Lucknow police issued a press release confirming the arrest. He has been charged under IPC sections 500 (defamation), 505 (public mischief) and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. Pak lawyers to hold nationwide agitation on June 14 to protest case against SC judge

Lawyers across Pakistan will hold a country-wide agitation on June 14 to protest against the government's action of filing a case of misconduct against a Supreme Court judge for allegedly hiding information of his wife's foreign properties. Announcing the protest on Saturday, Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) vice chairman Amjad Shah said, "The government should immediately withdraw the case as it has no merit and is based on ill-intention." The PBC also demanded resignation of the law minister and the attorney general. Pakistan President Arif Alvi has moved the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), asking it to take action against Justice Qazi Faez Isa for allegedly hiding information of his wife's benami foreign properties. The five-member SJC is headed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The other members include four seniormost judges -- two from the apex court and two from the high courts. Husband, mother-in-law beaten to death after woman found dead in house

Following the recovery of a woman's body in the toilet of her house, her husband and mother-in-law were allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Shivpur tea garden area of the district.The victim Radhan Tanti was allegedly missing since Wednesday and her body was recovered from a water tank in the toilet on Friday. Delhi: Decapitated body of woman found in a box in Jahangirpuri

A decapitated body of a woman was found inside a box in Jahangirpuri area in the national capital.The body is yet to be identified by the police.The incident come to the fore after Rajeshwar, a guard in a factory, noticed the foul smell from a box which was affixed atop a cycle."Foul smell was emanating from a box so I went to check. RS Jha appointed acting chief justice of Madhya Pradesh HC

Justice RS Jha was appointed as the acting chief justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court on Saturday, a day before incumbent Justice Sanjay Kumar Seth is due to retire. Madhya Pradesh High Court Registrar General RK Vani said Justice Jha will take charge as chief justice on Monday. He is the senior-most judge in the HC after Justice Seth. The registrar general said the Union government's Department of Justice had issued a notification to this effect on Friday. The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi had recommended the name of Justice A A Kureshi, who is currently the senior-most judge of the Gujarat High Court, for the post of the chief justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court. The recommendation is currently pending with the Centre.

Gangster, aide arrested by Delhi Police after brief gunfight in UP

A 31-year-old alleged gangster, wanted in almost two dozen cases, was arrested along with his associate by a joint team of the Delhi Police Crime Branch and UP Police after a brief gunfight in the Baghpat area of Uttar Pradesh, officials said Saturday. The arrested duo were identified as Sonu Thakur (31), a native of Bareilly in UP, and Manoj (32), a resident of Ghaziabad, they said. Thakur was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on information leading to his arrest. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ram Gopal Naik said they received a tip-off following which a trap was laid by the joint team in Baghpat on Friday. Two persons were signalled to stop, but, the pillion rider whipped out a pistol and fired 15 round on police and turned his motorcycle. 3 Nigerians arrested for duping people

Three Nigerians were arrested for allegedly duping people after opening fake profiles on matrimonial websites, police said Saturday. The arrested have been identified as Franklyn Chinedu Uzowuihe (32), Ukegbu Emmawuel Chigozie (40) and Samuel Chizoba (34), they said. The accused had created scores of fake profiles on different matrimonial websites and duped people, police said. "Police received a complaint where the complainant had alleged that he was cheated by a group of unknown persons on the pretext of marriage through matrimonial website," Anyesh Roy, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber), said. 2 arrested, 2 juveniles apprehended for killing man

The body of a man with multiple stab injuries was found in northeast Delhi's Khajuri Khas area Saturday, following which two people were arrested and as many juveniles apprehended, police said. A motorcycle was found near the spot leading to the body being identified as that of Khajuri Khas resident Naeem who was missing since Friday night, they said. Naeem's father and other family members identified his body, police said, adding during investigation, Azeem and Muzammil were arrested and two minors apprehended. Interrogation of the accused revealed that the victim had a relationship with a woman even after her marriage which angered her husband Azeem. Following this, Azeem, his brother-in-law, and two cousins hatched a plan to kill Naeem, a police official said. Naeem was called to DDA ground in Khajuri Khas on Friday night and was stabbed to death following a heated argument, the official said.

Hyderabad: Private courier service manager found dead under suspicious conditions

A private courier service manager was found dead under suspicious conditions at his residence here on Saturday.The deceased was identified as Martin Arogya Das (65)."Martin was staying alone in his home in Tirumalgerry since last week. He was planning to demolish his current house and construct a new one," said Ravi Kumar, Police Inspector Tirumalgerry.Martin had food with his friends on Friday, after which he started feeling uneasy. His friends dropped him home.When he did not turn up in office on Saturday, one of his colleagues, Chiranjeevi, went looking for him in his house and found him dead, the police officer said."There are injury marks on the chest. Over 500 booked for blocking highway over 'murder'

Police have registered an FIR, naming 50 people and mentioning 500 others, a day after they blocked the Delhi-Meerut highway, protesting over an alleged murder. They had placed the body of meat seller Asif on the highway during their protest Friday. Asif had gone with his four friends--Chand, Nanha, Afzal and Javed to the Ganga canal for swimming on Wednesday after the Eid celebration but did not return home. He was found dead in a forest area of Dhoulana town in Hapur district Thursday. The autopsy report is awaited. Tempers had run high when Asif's body was brought to his residence in Murad Nagar. Taiwan hit out at Spain on Saturday for deporting nearly 100 of its citizens accused of telecom fraud to China, following years of legal wrangling over the case. The repatriation of the group -- who are suspected of defrauding Chinese nationals over the phone -- is likely to heighten cross-strait tensions as Taipei maintains its citizens will not receive a fair trial in China.
