A Rouse Avenue court on Thursday reserved till tomorrow its order on an application filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking exemption from personal appearance for recording his statement as an accused in a defamation complaint filed by BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri.Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Samar Vishal was hearing the complaint of Bidhuri, who alleged that Kejriwal made a defamatory statement against him in an interview to a news channel on July 17, 2016.The magistrate said he will pass the order on Kejriwal's application on Friday.Lawyers, appearing for Bidhuri, opposed the Delhi Chief Minister's plea seeking exemption from appearance for recording his statement in the case.Bidhuri had earlier told the court that Kejriwal's remarks had maligned his image.He had claimed that no case was pending against him and added that Kejriwal had defamed him with his statement.
Two persons absconding in separate cases were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district on Thursday, officials said. Sham Lal, evading arrest in a 2009 case of rash driving and causing death, was held in Nagrota area of Jammu, they said. The other accused, Rakesh Kumar alias Soni, was nabbed in Vijaypur area. Kumar was booked for house trespass, breach of peace, and criminal intimidation in 2018, the officials added.
Two men were killed after their motorcycle was hit by a bus near Nariangarh on Thursday, police said. Gurdeep Singh (22) and Gurmeet Singh (23), residents of Ghanour village in Patiala district, were going to pay obeisance at Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand, they said. Their friend Gurpreet Singh, who was on a separate motorcycle, told police that the two were crossing toll tax barrier near Naraingarh when a college bus coming from opposite direction hit their bike. They sustained injuries to head and were rushed to civil hospital at Naraingarh, where the doctors declared them brought dead, police said. A case of rash and negligent driving was registered against the driver of the bus, police added.

The West Bengal Police on Thursday moved the Calcutta High Court seeking cancellation of the bail granted to three persons accused of smuggling a lion cub and three primates - two of them reportedly listed as "critically endangered". The vacation bench of the court directed the prosecution to serve notice on the accused, stating that the plea will appear for hearing before a regular bench three days after the court reopens on June 10. Challenging the bail granted by the additional chief judicial magistrate at Barrackpore court, public prosecutor Saswata Gopal Mukherjee prayed for its cancellation to ensure proper investigation into the case. He submitted that the lower court had granted bail to the three accused on the basis of seizure list, without seeking any report from the authorities. A man accused in a theft case has allegedly died in the custody of Hujurpur Police, officials said Thursday. The Additional Superintendent of Police (rural) has been asked to probe the incident, they added. "Almost 15 days ago, theft was reported in the house of one Keshri Singh in Dhurkhi village (under Hujurpur Police Station). Ashok Soni, 27, the servant, was taken into custody by the police for questioning. On Wednesday, Ashok fell ill. He was taken to a community health centre and subsequently to the district hospital, where he died," said Superintendent of Police Gaurav Grover. Grover said a panel of three doctors conducted the post-mortem, which was entirely videographed. "As per the initial post-mortem report, there are no injury marks on the body of the deceased. A 30-year-old man was injured after three-bike borne men allegedly opened fire at him in outer Delhi's Nihal Vihar area, police said Thursday. Six rounds were fired on the car of the victim. The victim sustained two bullet injuries, they said. The incident took place on Wednesday night. A case was registered Thursday against a Government Medical College and two private hospitals here for allegedly denying admission to a 62-year-old man who died after being turned away by the hospitals, police said. The case was lodged on the basis of the complaint by the relatives of the patient, identified as Jacob Thomas of Kerala's Idukki district, they said. The hospitals were charged under Indian Penal Code Section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder). Kottayam DSP R Sreekumar is probing the case, police said here. A Delhi court has sentenced a man and three of his family members to five years in jail for harassing his wife for demand of dowry and driving her to suicide. Additional Sessions Judge Satinder Kumar Gautam convicted Aditya Bajaj, his brother Abhishek Bajaj, mother Chand Bajaj and father Ashok Bajaj for the offences under Sections 498 A (husband or his relative subjecting wife to cruelty) and 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh on each of the convicts. "It is proved beyond reasonable doubt that there was oral and documentary evidence in order to bring home the guilt of the accused persons for the offence punishable under section 498-A IPC as they harassed and caused cruelty upon the deceased for demand of dowry," the court said. According to the prosecution, relations between the deceased Deepika and her in-laws were not cordial and she was harassed by them over demands of dowry. Deepika and Aditya got married in 2002 .
A suspected drug peddler, who fled from police custody while being taken to court in Kathua district here, was nabbed within 24 hours, police said on Thursday. Sagar Singh and Harjeet Singh, both hailing from Ludhiana, Punjab were arrested on Monday after police recovered 90 kg of poppy from their truck, police said. The duo was on their way to Punjab from Srinagar, they added. While being taken to a court in Hiranagar on Tuesday, Sagar Singh managed to give police the slip, prompting authorities to suspend an officer among two cops, they said. An undertrial allegedly committed suicide at the Jhadol sub-jail of Rajasthan's Udaipur district, police said Thursday. Forty-year-old Amrit Lal, alias Amra, was arrested in a case of murder on April 9 this year. He was found hanging in a cell with a plastic rope, Jhadol DSP Deva Ram said. He said the body was handed over to family members after a post-mortem examination. Proceedings have been initiated under Section 174 of the CrPC.
Two men were arrested for allegedly stealing paper rolls worth Rs 70,000 from a godown in outer Delhi's Alipur, police said Thursday. The accused - Shiv Bahadur (35) and Yogender (28), residents of Khera Kalan were arrested by the police. In his complainant, Ashwani Garg, the owner of the godown said on Wednesday noon, he found 10 paper rolls, kept outside his godown and worth Rs 70,000, stolen. Bahadur and Yogender were nabbed from the Khera colony and the stolen articles were also recovered from them, a senior police officer said. The vehicle used for carrying the stolen materials were also seized, he said. Police said Bahadur used to identify the place from where they could steal articles. On the other hand, Yogender, a driver would arrange the vehicle for carrying the stolen articles, police said, adding the accused are being further interrogated.
