Brett Lee picks top three fast bowlers for World Cup

Former Australia quick Brett Lee, on Thursday, picked Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins as his top three fast-bowlers for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup."What a wonderful bowler. He has got a good record, wonderful yorker, good pace," cricket.com.au quoted Lee, as saying, while commenting on Bumrah, who has 85 wickets under his belt in 49 matches.Ranked as world number one bowler in ODI cricket, Bumrah is potent with new ball. But it is death overs, where the Indian paceman shines as he can produce best yorkers both at top and slower pace.Moving over to his two countrymen, Lee, who is the member of the 2003 World Cup winning team, said that Australia need to stick with Starc."You have to stick with Mitchell Starc. He has still got that quality. When that pace is up he is hard to go past," Lee said. The lethal left-armer Starc was the Player of the Tournament in the 2015 edition for returning with 22 wickets and reached 100 ODI wickets in just 52 matches, becoming the ...

PSG's Al-Khelaifi charged in Qatar athletics graft probe

Paris Saint-Germain chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi was on Thursday charged with corruption in the bidding process for this year's world athletics championships in Doha, judicial sources said. Al-Khelaifi, who is also the boss of Qatari television channel BeIn Sports, has been under investigation since March in connection with the bidding process for the 2017 and the 2019 world championships. Another BeIn executive, Yousef Al-Obaidly, a PSG board member, is also under investigation by French justice over the awarding of the 2019 worlds to Qatar. Doha lost out to London to stage the 2017 worlds but beat off opposition to host this year's event from Eugene in the United States and Barcelona. Al-Khelaifi was informed of his "mis en examen", a French legal term that has no direct equivalent in the American or British legal systems but roughly translates as being charged, by letter. He was unable to attend a May 16 court hearing as he was in Qatar for the Cup final. The French term does not ...

Plan was to bat, bat and bat: Rahane after hundred on County debut

The plan was to just bat, bat and bat," said Ajinkya Rahane after becoming only third Indian to score a hundred on debut in County cricket. Rahane struck a patient 119 off 260 balls for Hampshire on day three of their match against Nottinghamshire here on Wednesday. "I am really happy with my performance. I wanted to make it count. My plan was to bat, bat and bat. I was not thinking about the runs. I just wanted to be in the middle and put my team in a good position and that worked," said Rahane in a video posted by Cricinfo. "It (discipline) is very important here as a batsman. I have been talking to teammates about batting plans, how I need to go on and keep batting. Just had a simple game plan, to try and play as late as possible," said India's Test regular. Piyush Chawla was the first Indian to score a century on debut in County cricket while Murali Vijay was second. Rahane shared a 257-run stand for the third wicket with Sam Northeast who ended with 133. "He batted really well ..

S. Korea scraps joint Olympic hockey team with North

South Korea are dropping their plan for a joint women's field hockey team with the North at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, officials said Thursday, after Pyongyang failed to co-operate. Sporting ties triggered a rapid diplomatic thaw on and around the peninsula last year, but are stagnating with the wider process over the North's nuclear arsenal deadlocked. The two Koreas formed their first-ever unified Olympic team -- a joint women's ice hockey squad -- for the 2018 Winter Games in the South, where they proved a media sensation despite losing all five of their matches by a combined scoreline of 28-2. The two Koreas then formed several joint teams for the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia and in February agreed to send unified basketball, judo, field hockey and rowing squads to Tokyo. But just weeks later a summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump collapsed in disagreement over sanctions relief and what Pyongyang would be willing to give up in return. That ...

IOC decision to strip AIBA right to conduct boxing in Olympics shocks Shiva, Amit sees advantage

Indian pugilists on Thursday gave a mixed reaction to the International Olympic Committee's recommendation to bar AIBA, the world governing body of amateur boxing, from organising the event at the Tokyo Olympics next year. The IOC's Executive Board recommended on Wednesday that AIBA be stripped of its right to organise the event at Tokyo 2020, but said the sport should still feature at the Games. The recommendation, which followed investigations into alleged serious mismanagement at the crisis-riddled AIBA -- is almost certain to be rubber-stamped by the full IOC membership at its Congress in Lausanne next month. The move would mean that the upcoming World Championships in September-October in Russia may not serve as the Olympic qualification event. World Championship bronze medallist Shiva Thapa reacted with "shock and surprise", while reigning Asian Games champion Amit Panghal welcomed the move, saying it would give him more preparation time to assess the international boxers. "I'm .

'Unprepared' Tokyo 2020 boxing boss vows to put athletes first

The Olympic official hastily put in charge of organising the Tokyo 2020 boxing competition admitted Thursday he was "totally unprepared" for his appointment, but vowed he would put athletes' interests first. The IOC tapped Morinari Watanabe from the Japanese Olympic Committee to run a special taskforce to organise the Tokyo 2020 boxing competition on Wednesday after stripping the world amateur governing body (AIBA) of the right following misconduct allegations. The 60-year-old, currently head of the International Gymnastics Federation, told reporters at a news conference in Tokyo that the call had come out of the blue. "It was two days ago at night. I was having dinner and all of sudden, the (country code) 44 appeared on my phone. I was wondering who it was and it was (IOC) President (Thomas) Bach!" he said. "He told me to become chair of the taskforce. I was happy. I was aware of the challenges and issues and I knew there were athletes who are suffering and if there are athletes ...

Training in Blackburn Rovers' Academy will help Jadhav:Mowbray

Blackburn Rovers head coach Tony Mowbray hopes young footballer Aniket Jadhav's time with the club will have provided him with the 'building blocks' for a future career. But the coach also noticed the youth's shortcomings like lacking in peripheral vision about what teammates were doing without looking at them. Jadhav, who hails from Maharashtra's Kolhapur and plays for Jamshedpur FC, was the first professional Indian player to train in England, after arriving at Rovers' Academy for a three-month spell in early March. To aid his development, he was invited to join in with a first team training session ahead of the season finale against Swansea, and Mowbray believes that Jadhav would have benefited from the experience. "He came up and trained one afternoon and I think that would benefit him playing with experienced professional footballers at Championship level," the manager cum head coach was quoted as saying in a release issued Thursday. "He's only a young boy, but he .

Kedar will play a crucial role for India in World Cup: Pandit

Former India stumper Chandrakant Pandit has backed Kedar Jadhav to play a crucial role in the national team's campaign in the World Cup beginning in the UK on May 30. Pandit has tracked Jadhav's progress since his younger days, having coached the Maharashtra U-23 side. "He (Kedar) has definitely has a lot of talent and what he has proved in the last couple of seasons that he is a utility player and the best part is that Virat Kohli has used him for his all-round ability and not only for batting. You think he is a part-time bowler, but he has been successful," Pandit, who now coaches Vidarbha, told PTI. Pandit said he always knew that Kedar had it in him to play at the highest level. "The good thing is that he has shown a cool temperament. In the middle-order he has the ability to win the game. A player like him would be ideal for 5/6 position. "I am sure that they have a good option if they think about Kedar. I have seen him from beginning and I always found that he was talented. I am

Maxwell opens up about his bowling and batting strategies

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been honing up his skills to bowl as many dot balls as he can and limit to bowl 'boundary balls' to create pressure on the batsman."Try not to get hit for six most of the time. For me, I suppose, a lot of the time that I bowl, I just try to limit the boundary balls. As long as I'm doing that, if they hit some good shots off my bowling, I'm not too fazed," ICC quoted Maxwell, as saying."If I'm limiting the boundary balls and giving myself the best chance to squeeze a few dot balls, bowl a couple of tight overs, it might create a bit of pressure at the other end," he added. After competing with India and Pakistan and registering victory over both, Maxwell decided to go to England instead of participating in the Indian Premier League to tune himself for the World Cup. His county stint included six List A games with Lancashire at the One-Day Cup."I think it's important for me to just bowl in a partnership with someone. That's probably the clarity I ..
