Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday embarked on a nine-day tour of Singapore and Japan, stating that his visit was aimed at attracting more investments to the state. SC on Jallikattu: TN parties welcomes ruling, animal rights groups see red

The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the validity of the amended act of Tamil Nadu allowing the bull-taming sport Jallikattu, with state political parties welcoming the verdict while animal rights activists expressed disappointment and insisted they will look for legal remedies. The spectacle sport coinciding with the Tamil harvest festival Pongal in January draws national and international audience. The southern town of Madurai hosts jallikattu at Alanganallur, Palamedu and Avaniyapuram, where the raging bulls charge out of 'Vaadivasal' (the entry point) to take on the tamers who invest a lot of pride in subduing the beast. "Jallikattu" is also known as "eruthazhuvuthal". On Thursday, the apex court also showed the green flag to Maharashtra and Karnataka for their bullock-cart races and buffalo racing sport "Kambala", respectively. A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Justice K M Joseph, which delivered a unanimous verdict, dealt with five questions referred to it by a ...

TN tragedy was led by methanol consumption, not hooch, claims police

The tragedy that struck Ekkiyarkuppam and Perunkaranai villages of Tamil Nadu was due to the consumption of methanol, a deadly concoction made by illicit brewers, and not due to spurious liquor, the police claimed on Tuesday. The organic chemical was procured from a man from Puducherry by various persons and it was used to brew the spurious liquor, a release from the DGP C Sylendra Babu said. This light, volatile, colourless and flammable liquid is used for industrial purposes. Methanol has the odour of alcohol. "Due to the effective measures taken to prevent the brewing of illicit liquor in Tamil Nadu, and also the enhanced vigil to curtail the movement of the illicit liquor, resulted in its non-availability in the state. Few persons resorted to selling the chemical substance stolen from industrial units. Hence, this tragedy," the release said. Investigation is on to find out from which industrial unit this methanol was stolen and the nexus between those involved in this nefarious
