Electricity dept in full preparedness to meet NE monsoon: TN Minister

All preventive measures have been taken in the State to meet the North East Monsoon challenges, Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji said on Tuesday. A total of 1.5 lakh electricity board staff are in preparedness and special officers have been appointed 24X7 to monitor during rains, the minister told reporters here. Senthil Balaji, who was here to participate in the ward committee and area sabha meet as part of celebrating local bodies day, said the grievances of the public will be accepted as petitions and would find solution as soon as possible, since such meetings are being held at 846 places in 100 wards in the city. In the last one-and-half years rule of DMK, Rs 211 crore worth road projects were started and some are in completion stage and others are in progress, he said adding that an additional Rs 200 crore was allotted for the works.

Heavy rainfall recorded in parts of Tamil Nadu, normal life disrupted

Normal life has been disrupted following a spate of heavy rainfall in the state of Tamil Nadu. After recording heavy rainfall in Chennai, schools in certain areas of the city were closed.Following the heavy downpour, the District collector announced holidays for schools and colleges in Mayiladuthurai (Only schools), Thiruvarur, and Nagaipattam due to heavy rain.Today, heavy rainfall was recorded in Nagapattinam district. It was recorded at 45.40 mm of rainfall. Though, no injuries or cattle or human loss was recorded.After heavy rainfall water logging can be seen in parts of Chennai. People can be seen facing trouble while crossing roads. Also, vehicles have been put to a stop between knee-height level water.Chennai is set to have a few more rainy days; the minimum temperature in the city has dipped to 23 degrees Celsius. Tamil Nadu reports 152 new Covid cases, active tally declines to 1,602

Tamil Nadu reported 152 fresh coronavirus cases on Monday, taking the tally to 35,92,043. With no fatalities, the death toll continued to remain at 38,048 today. The active cases declined to 1,602 from 1,732 on Sunday, a bulletin from the health department said. As many as 282 patients were discharged following treatment today, taking the net recoveries to 35,52,393.

Wickremesinghe hopeful of resolving problems faced by ethnic Tamils

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said he is hopeful of resolving the problems faced by ethnic Tamils in the country, as he announced the appointment of a committee to find ways to integrate the Indian-origin workers in the plantation sector into the society. Wickremesinghe's remarks came on Sunday during an event in Colombo to accept a consignment of medicine donated by the Union Territory of Puducherry at the request of Ceylon Worker's Congress (CWC), a leading political party representing the Indian-origin Tamils in the Central Province. While some of the Tamils of Hill Country origin had integrated successfully into the Sri Lankan society, some have failed and measures would be taken to assist them to do so, he said. Tamil Nadu records 183 fresh Covid-19 cases; active tally at 2,533

Tamil Nadu registered 183 fresh Covid-19 infections on Wednesday while the active cases continued to drop. The active cases slipped to 2,533 from 2,736 on Tuesday, according to a bulletin. Both the daily additions and the active cases were on the decline over the past many days. As many as 386 people were cured of the disease today. There was no virus-related death, the bulletin said. As many as 35,91,226 people tested positive so far. The total recoveries stood at 35,50,645. The State recorded 38,048 deaths till date.

Tamil Nadu records 198 fresh Covid-19 cases, active tally at 3,124

Tamil Nadu on Monday recorded 198 new COVID-19 cases, while both the fresh infections as well as the active numbers continued to be on the decline. Recoveries (383) outnumbered new cases, with the active cases being 2,939, according to a government bulletin. The active cases were 3,124 on Sunday. No new virus-related deaths were reported today. With the addition of the new patients, the total positive cases so far mounted to 35,90,856. Total recoveries were 35,49,869, while the toll from the virus stood at 38,048. A couple of districts showed no new infections.

Tamil Nadu's gross state domestic product grew by 5.87% in FY21: CAG report

Tamil Nadu's gross state domestic product GSDP, one of the vital indicators of the state's economy, grew by 5.87 per cent during the period 2020-21 despite the contribution from industries and the services sector between 2016-17 and 2020-21 declining, a report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India said on Thursday. The report which was tabled during the Assembly session said the GSDP grew by 5.87 per cent as compared to 2019-20 which stood at 10.25 per cent. However, the GSDP at 5.87 per cent was against the country's growth rate of a negative 2.97 per cent, the report said. The GSDP is the value of all the goods and services produced within a state and the growth of GSDP is an important indicator of the economy, as it denotes the extent of changes in the level of economic development of the state over a period of time.
