Taliban, Afghan officials to meet in Moscow for peace talks

Eight Gambian soldiers jailed over coup plot

A Gambian military court on Monday sentenced seven soldiers to nine years in jail for plotting to overthrow President Adama Barrow, and handed a three-year prison term to another. The sentences relate to events in 2017 after the ouster of strongman Yahya Jammeh, who ruled the tiny West African country with an iron fist for 22 years. The court in Yundum, about 25 kilometres from the capital Banjul, acquitted four other soldiers arrested along with the eight who got jail terms. Tribunal head Colonel Salifu Bojang said two of the 12 soldiers accused had accepted plotting "how to arrest cabinet ministers, the Chief of Defence Staff and battalion commanders of the Gambia Armed Forces." Hundreds of prisoners start fires, wound staff in Ukraine riot

A major riot involving 500 prisoners broke out at a penitentiary in the Ukrainian city of Odessa on Monday with the inmates setting fire to buildings and wounding seven staff members, officials said. Authorities deployed several hundred National Guard troops and police to help put down the riot, an AFP photographer at the scene said. The violence broke out at the facility in the Black Sea port city as authorities planned to move several convicts to a different prison, officials said, adding that the situation was now under control. Rs 65 lakh looted from milk company staffers, 2 held

In a daylight heist, Rs 65 lakh was looted from two milk company employees at gunpoint by five men in Greater Noida on Friday when they were en route a bank to deposit the money, police said. Two of the accused have been arrested over the incident that took place in the Jarcha police station area in the afternoon, the police said. "The assailants intercepted the car along the NTPC road and overpowered the milk company's cashier and car driver at gunpoint. They were carrying Rs 65 lakh in the car to deposit it in a bank in Ghaziabad," Senior Superintendent of Police, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Vaibhav Krishna said. NIA court convicts four members of Bodo insurgent group for 2014 attack in Kokrajhar

Four members of Bodo insurgent group NDFB(S) were convicted by a special NIA court in Guwahati Monday for a terror attack in Assam's Kokrajhar district in 2014 in which five tribals were killed, officials said. Bina Basumatary, Jayanta Mushahary, Dwithai Basumatary and Khanda Daimary were sentenced to five years imprisonment and a fine was imposed on each of them, an NIA spokesperson said here. "?The case pertains to the terrorist attack on 23.12.2014 by NDFB(S) cadres upon innocent people of Pakiriguri village under Serfanguri Police Station in Kokrajhar district of Assam, in which five adivasis were killed and another five sustained grievous injuries due to indiscriminate firing by the terrorist group," he said. He said one of the accused Gautam Mahalia had earlier pleaded guilty in April 2019. "He was sentenced to 4.5 years. Armed miscreants looted Rs 60 lakh from two persons near the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) here on Monday, a senior police officer said. The two persons, staff of rice businessman were on their way to deposit the money in a bank branch when six miscreants riding three bikes snatched the money from them at gun point, City Superintendent of Police (East) Rajendra Kumar Bheel told PTI. Several Maoist activists were arrested in Nepal as a general strike called by an outlawed communist group on Monday disrupted normal life in the country, a day after a series of explosions rocked the capital Kathmandu, killing at least four people. Educational institutions and business establishments remained shut in major cities while traffic was thin due to the strike called by the Netra Bikram Chand (Biplav)-led Communist Party of Nepal to protest against the killing of its cadre during an encounter a couple of months ago. Begusarai: 3 injured in firing, probe launched to nab miscreants

Three people were injured in separate incidents of firing in Begusarai district of Bihar on Sunday.According to the police, two people, identified as Manish and Sunil Kumar, were shot at by assailants in Dularua Dham area which falls under Phulwaria police station jurisdiction when they were en route to their home after attending an event in a nearby village.As per the police, the firing in Phulwaria took place over distribution of booty which was looted from a train.The condition of both the victims is serious, the police stated.In the second incident, a trader, identified as Mohammed Kasim, was returning home after collecting money when he was shot by a criminal named Rajiv Yadav at Cheria Bariyarpur chawk in the district.All three victims are undergoing treatment in different hospitals.The police have launched an operation to nab the accused.

Four dead in post-election riot in Indonesia's Papua

A 16-year-old boy was one of at least four people shot dead by police during a riot triggered by dissatisfaction over the election result in the restive province of Papua, an official said. More than 300 supporters of a legislative candidate who claimed he should have won the seat in the local council attacked a district office in Asmat district. The candidate, who was not identified, claimed based on the votes he should have won a seat in the city council but his name was replaced with another candidate's name. The protesters, armed with sharp weapons, damaged the district office, local military spokesman Muhammad Aidi said. Four soldiers guarding a nearby military post tried to control the protesters but were outnumbered, and one of the officers tried to control the mob by opening fire into the air, Aidi said. Villagers in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo killed a health worker engaged in the fight against a major Ebola outbreak and looted a treatment centre, according to an official report seen Monday by AFP. 3 injured in powerful blast claimed by Islamic State in Bangladesh

A police officer and two others were injured in a powerful blast claimed by the Islamic State in Bangladesh's capital. The explosives that lead to the blast in a police pick-up van in Dhaka's Malibagh on Sunday night might have been planted, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said on Monday. "We think it (the explosive) was kept in the car and not hurled at the police," he said while talking to reporters after visiting the injured at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. "Based on primary investigation, we think it was an improvised bomb, but it was more powerful than the usual ones used here," he said. A roadside bombing claimed by the Taliban killed 10 Afghan soldiers in the country's west while insurgent attacks on security checkpoints in northern Afghanistan killed four policemen, local officials said Monday.
