Painful that some raised concerns when India was battling Covid: Dhankhar

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday said when India was battling the COVID-19 pandemic and helping other nations simultaneously, it was painful to find some "irritating" voices raising concerns and not believing in the country's abilities. Addressing the 48th convocation of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, he said, "As a nation, we need to 'escape' that. That does not help anyone." Dhankhar further said that he comes from the legal profession and understands what professionalism means. "A slight dilution, slight commercialisation, slight ethical deviation can be bad for those we seek to serve," he said. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and his junior minister S P Singh Baghel were present on the occasion. Observing that the convocation was taking place after an interval of three years, the vice president said the gap reminds him of the Covid pandemic. AIIMS doctor provides IVF patient's eggs to two women without consent

A doctor of the AIIMS-Delhi's gynaecology department who provided some eggs from a patient undergoing IVF treatment to two women without her consent in violation of ICMR's guidelines has been let off by the National Medical Commission with a warning almost six years after the incident. Issuing the warning on July 18, the NMC noted the doctor has contributed immensely to the field of reproductive medicine. "In spite of the fact that the act in question was done in good faith to benefit the poor patients without accruing any personal gain, it cannot be denied that prevailing guidelines were violated. So, the doctor is warned to be more careful in future," the order read. The doctor had appealed to the National Medical Commission after the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) in September last year ordered the suspension of her license for one month. According to the complaint received by the DMC in 2017, 30 eggs were retrieved from the patient on August 12 of that year for an IVF procedure.

Centre does 'politics of development': Mandaviya hits back at Tejashwi

Union minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday said the Modi government believes in "politics of development" and not "politics in development" while urging Bihar minister Tejashwi Yadav to provide suitable land for the construction of AIIMS in Darbhanga. The comments come after Yadav, who holds the health portfolio in the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of 'safed jhooth' (blatant lie) in his address earlier in the day when he spoke of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the north Bihar district of Darbhanga. "It is an outright lie on part of the PM to have made a mention of AIIMS at Darbhanga, which is yet to be constructed. He reminds me of Union Home Minister Amit Shah who some time ago boasted of Purnea airport, which is far from functional, as one of the achievements of the government," Yadav told PTI video. "The fact is, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had taken the initiative for AIIMS, Darbhanga and a piece of land, suitab

AIIMS urges DMRC to enhance feeder bus service to hospital campus

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences here has urged the DMRC to augment the feeder bus service to the hospital campus to address the commuting challenges faced by patients, attendants, and staff. Around 40-50 thousand individuals visit AIIMS daily and a majority of them rely on Delhi Metro services. The need for convenient transportation from the metro stations to the AIIMS campus has become evident, AIIMS Director Dr Srinivas said. In a letter to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Managing Director Vikas Kumar, Srinivas said, at present, the hospital is accessible from the AIIMS Metro Station and South Extension Metro Station, both of which are significant entry points for visitors. However, the AIIMS campus is distributed across three different land parcels, namely Masjid Moth, Ansari Nagar, and Raj Nagar. As a result, those arriving via Delhi Metro are faced with a considerable distance to walk or the challenge of finding alternative modes of transport like autorickshaws

38% of Indians have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, says AIIMS study

A recent AIIMS study, which analysed published reports on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in India, states that over one-third (38 per cent) of Indians have fatty liver or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The phenomenon is not restricted to adults, but affects nearly 35 per cent of the children as well, says the study published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology in June 2022. "Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is often unrecognised since it does not cause symptoms in the early stage, but may progress in some patients with severe liver disease. "The cause of 'fatty liver' or 'steatohepatitis' is the recent westernisation of our diets which involves increased intake of fast food, lack of healthy fruits and vegetables on the plate, and an unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle," Dr Anoop Saraya, Head of Department of Gastroenterology, said. He said the ailment is considered the "liver counterpart" of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and hear
