Ravindra Jadeja takes four as India manages to restrict Australia to 174/8

Come-back man Ravindra Jadeja (4/45) struck four times as India reduced Australia to 174 for eight at tea on day one of the opening Test here on Thursday. The left-arm spinner, who returned from a knee injury, was the wrecker-in-chief during the second session as he broke the partnership between Steve Smith (37) and Marnus Labuschagne (49) before trapping Matt Renshaw and Todd Murphy. Alex Carrey scored a 33-ball 36 before veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (2/41), who was the other wicket-taker for India in the second session, ended his stay in the middle. Earlier, pacers Mohammed Shami (1/12) and Mohammed Siraj (1/13) dealt early blows to the visitors, removing openers Usman Khwaja (1) and David Warner (1) within the first three overs. Smith and Labuschagne stitched a 82-run partnership for the third wicket.

Australia too produces bouncy tracks; we want to solve problems: McDonald

Australia coach Andrew McDonald has played down the conversation about "doctored pitches" in India, and indicated he wants his team to be problem solvers who can adjust to changes in conditions from one venue to another. The Australian media has gone hammer and tongs over the manner in which the pitch for the opening Test in Nagpur has been prepared, saying it had been tailor-made to assist spinners and trouble the touring party's left-handed batters. However, McDonald, who took over the head coach's job from Justin Langer early last year, said ahead of the start of the match on Thursday that he is "excited by the challenge that confronts us", clearly echoing the sentiments of his captain Pat Cummins. "Our job is to solve the problems that the wicket presents and that's the great part about Test cricket, is the conditions change from country to country and from venue to venue within the country," McDonald told SEN's Whateley on Thursday. The coach added that all along the feeling i

SKY continues to lead T20I ranking chart, Gill achieves career-best rank

India's Suryakumar Yadav remained static at the top spot, while compatriot Shubman Gill shot up to a career-best 30th position in the batting chart of the ICC Men's T20I Player Rankings released on Wednesday. Surya continues to lead the batting list with 906 rating points. Gill achieved a career-best position after smashing a match-winning century against New Zealand in the third and final ODI in Ahmedabad recently. Gill's 126 not out off 63 balls that contributed to India's huge 168-run victory and helped the home team seal the series 2-1, lifted him an incredible 168 slots. The 23-year-old, who has now slammed centuries in all three formats of the game, is ranked sixth in ODIs and 62nd in Tests. Besides, Virat Kohli has dropped a rung to the 15 position among batters, while K L Rahul slid two places (27th) and skipper Rohit Sharma was further behind in the 29th spot. Young left-handed wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan has also dropped three places to 48th. No Indian bowler, ho

Star India asks BCCI for Rs 130-crore discount in the existing deal

India's home season media rights holder Star India has asked the BCCI for a Rs 130 crore discount in the existing deal while jersey sponsor BYJU's, which is on its way out, wants the board to encash bank guarantee worth an estimated Rs 140 crore to honour the current agreement. The BCCI top brass deliberated on the two subjects for more than an hour in the emergent meeting of the Apex Council on Monday. It was a virtual meeting. In November, BYJU's had communicated to the BCCI that it wants to exit as the jersey sponsor of the Indian cricket team but the board asked the ed-tech company to continue until at least March 2023. However, in June, BYJU's had extended its jersey sponsorship agreement with the BCCI until November 2023 for an estimated USD 35 million. While an approximately Rs 140 crore will be paid to the BCCI through bank guarantee, the remaining, around Rs 160 crore, will be paid via installments. "Only BYJU's and Star India issues were discussed in the meeting but that

Rishabh Pant airlifted to Mumbai, set to undergo surgery, says BCCI

Star India batter Rishabh Pant is all set to "undergo surgery for ligament tears", the BCCI stated on Wednesday, effectively ruling him out of competitive cricket for an indefinite period. Pant has been airlifted from a Dehradun hospital to Mumbai where he will undergo extensive treatment for ligament injuries in the knee and ankle which he had sustained during a car crash on December 30, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a press release. The BCCI decided to shift Pant to Mumbai by air ambulance since he is not in a position to fly by a commercial airline. "Rishabh, who is currently receiving treatment for his injuries at Max Hospital, Dehradun following a car accident on 30th December, will be brought to Mumbai in an air ambulance," Shah said in the release. As reported earlier by PTI, Pant will be treated by noted sports orthopaedic surgeon Dinshaw Pardiwala. "He will be admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute and will be under the direct ...

Sourav Ganguly is set to join Delhi Capitals as Director of Cricket

Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly will be returning to the IPL fold as Director of Cricket with the Delhi Capitals during the upcoming edition starting in April, sources close to the development confirmed. The former India captain, who stepped down from the BCCI president's post in October, will also oversee all the cricket verticals of the franchise along with the ILT20 team Dubai Capitals and the SA T230 league side Pretoria Capitals. "Yes, Sourav will be back with Delhi Capitals from this year. The discussions and modalities are over. "He has worked with the franchise, shares a good comfort level with owners and if he would have worked in IPL, it would have always been with DC," an IPL source tracking developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity. Ganguly was the mentor of Delhi Capitals during his stint with the franchise in 2019. It is understood that Delhi Capitals' recent auction picks had both head coach Ricky Ponting and Ganguly's footprints.
