Two workers die after falling from 10th floor of building in Delhi

Two workers died Monday allegedly after falling from the tenth floor of Videocon Tower in Central Delhi's Jhandewalan while cleaning the building's glass, police said. The deceased were identified as Raju (24) and Ishtiyaq Khan (25), both residing in a labour colony near Vasant Kunj, they said. Raju and Khan were cleaning the glass when the incident occurred. The right side rope of the crane, in which they were sitting, broke and they fell from the tenth floor of the building, a senior police officer said. The victims were rushed to Lady Hardinge Hospital where they were declared brought dead, police said. Police said those responsible for the safety of the workers will be booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Guj: Vayu to weaken into 'well-marked low pressure area'

Cyclone Vayu, which weakened into a "depression", is likely to weaken further into a "well-marked low pressure area" before crossing the north Gujarat coast, a senior IMD official said Monday. Manorama Mohanty, scientist with India Meteorological Department at Ahmedabad, said Vayu was no longer a danger and would cause rainfall, and winds with a speed of 30-40 kilometres per hour. "The cyclone has weakened and turned into depression, which is going to further weaken and convert into a well- marked low pressure area before it crosses the Gujarat coast," Mohanty said. In its bulletin issued Monday evening, the IMD said "depression" over the Arabian Sea moved east-northeastward with a speed of about 16 kmph during the day, and lay centred around 135 km west-southwest of Naliya in Gujarat, 130 km west-southwest of Dwarka, and 220 km west-southwest of Bhuj. Defence Ministry seeks report on submarine fire from Navy

The Defence Ministry has sought a detailed report from the Indian Navy about a fire incident in Mumbai which caused damage to a Kilo-class submarine INS Sindhukesari."A detailed report has been sought from the Navy about the fire incident in the Naval dockyards in Mumbai," defence sources said.The submarine had recently been upgraded by a Russian shipyard and was being readied for operational roles by the force.Sources said the fire took place within a few days of the submarine returning from Russia after an expensive upgrade.The Kilo class submarines, named the Sindhughosh class by the Indian Navy, were acquired in the 1980s and have been prone to a number of accidents in recent years as their originally planned service life draws to an end.The INS Sindhurakshak was lost with its crew in an explosion in 2013 while torpedoes were being loaded, while a fire onboard INS Sindhuratna in 2014 led to two personnel losing their lives.

8 injured after water tank under construction collapses

Centering of a water tank of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) under construction collapsed at 11 am on Monday here. Eight workers have been injured and are receiving treatment for the same.Krishna Byre Gowda Cabinet Minister of rural development, Karnataka said, "From the eight injured six are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)."Three have succumbed to their injuries. The three that passed away were Prabhuram, a 26-year-old civil engineer from Tamil Nadu, Sumanthkar a supervisor from West Bengal and Krishnayadav, a 25-year-old from Davangere, Karnataka.A signed document by the contractor stated that there were 20 workers present on site. The minister added, "All the 20 workers have been rescued and the dog squad and radar equipment have been put to use to ensure that no one else is left behind."The project was given to a construction company to build it under the guidance of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). "The news of this accident reached the BWSSB offices at 11 am .

The Philippine president has called for calm amid an outcry after a Chinese vessel hit a Philippine fishing boat, which sank and put 22 fishermen in danger in the disputed South China Sea. President Rodrigo Duterte said Monday the June 9 incident at Reed Bank was a "little maritime accident" between two vessels that should be investigated, and that China's side should be heard. 'Explosion' near China-North Korea border causes small quake

A "suspected explosion" near the China-North Korean border caused a small earthquake on Monday, Chinese seismology authorities said, less than an hour after news broke about Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming trip to Pyongyang. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the 1.3-magnitude earthquake with a zero-metre depth occurred at 19:38 pm (1138 GMT) in Hunchun city in northeastern Jilin province. It was unclear what caused the explosion. In the past, nuclear tests by Pyongyang have caused tremors around the northern border China shares with North Korea. But the latest incident occurred more than 200 kilometres (125 miles) from Punggye-ri, the North's nuclear site under Mount Mantap. 4 of family killed in car-truck collision

Four members of a family from died on Monday when their car collided head-on with a truck in Rajasthan's Bikaner district, police said. The accident occurred on the Bikaner-Sri Ganganagar national highway when the two vehicles, coming from opposite directions, collided, Lunkaransar police station incharge Boota Singh said. All the four occupants of the car, which was coming from Suratgarh, died on the spot, Singh said. The deceased -- Satish Kumar, his sons Dhruv and Dev, and brother Vikas, -- were from Delhi's Karol Bagh area. Police are trying to trace the truck driver who fled after the accident, the officer added.

While Mohammad Yousuf Mir, a resident of Bakura area of central Kashmir's Ganderbal was struck by lightning while he was working in his field, an official said, adding that he died on the spot.

Operation to retrieve bodies from AN 32 crash site remains suspended due to bad weather

The operation to retrieve bodies of the 13 air warriors onboard the ill-fated AN-32 aircraft that crashed in Arunachal Pradesh remained suspended for the third consecutive day due to bad weather, Air Force officials said Monday. Due to heavy rains and low clouds no helicopter could take off on Monday, an official said. A rescue team had recovered the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR) of the Russian-origin aircraft at the crash site on Friday. Bad weather is hampering helicopters from performing winching operations which are mandatory for all the rescue operations and recovery of mortal remains, the official said. "Heavy rains and dense clouds are hampering the operations. The location of the crash site is in on a hill which is making the retrieving operation more difficult," another official added. 2 houseboats gutted in fire

Two houseboats were gutted in a fire at the Nigeen lake here, officials said on Monday. The fire broke out at one of the boats during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, and immediately spread to another, officials said. Both the houseboats were gutted in the incident. There was no loss of life or injury and no tourist was staying inside the houseboats, the officials added.

Avalanche strands 4 Italian, 3 local climbers in Pakistan

An Italian diplomat and two mountaineering workers in Pakistan say an avalanche has stranded a group of four Italian and three Pakistani climbers on a mountain in the country's north. A tour operator, Ashraf Aman, who arranged the expedition, said the avalanche hit the seven mountaineers when they were descending. He gave no details about their condition. Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo confirmed Monday's incident happened in the district of Ghizar, but gave no further details. Submit fire NOC by Sept or face action: Delhi govt to restro-bars, clubs

The Delhi government has directed restro-bars and night clubs in the city to submit fire safety certificate by September and warned them of strict action in case of non-compliance of the order, an official said Monday. The move came months after a massive fire at a hotel in central Delhi's Karol Bagh area killed 17 people. According to the official, the excise department has issued the order to the city's all restro-bars and night clubs having gross floor area of 90 sq metres or more irrespective of their seating capacity. "Such establishments, which have excise licence, have been directed to submit a Fire Safety Certificate issued by the Delhi Fire Services by September 30 this year. The department has warned them of action as deemed fit under the Delhi Excise Act, 2009, including suspension or cancellation of licence," official also said. Six killed as car falls into gorge in Dehradun district

Six people, including two children, were killed Monday when their car fell into a deep gorge in Tuni area of Dehradun district, police said. While three of those killed were members of a family, the other three were their relatives, they said. The car was going from Banpur to Tuni Bazar when it met with the accident. All occupants of the car died on the spot, they said. The deceased were identified as Pavan Negi (32), who was driving the car, his wife Rashmi (26), their daughter Ishika (4), Sahaspur resident Suman Tomar (33), her son Arambh Tomar (5) and Mastu Devi, 72, from Shimla. Suman Tomar was Pavan Negi's sister and Mastu Devi his aunt. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat expressed grief at the loss of lives in the accident.
