Fire breaks out in police lines in Udhampur, no casualty

A fire broke out during unloading of cans of liquid fuel in police lines in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district Wednesday which was doused soon, officials said. There was no casualty, they added. When the CRPF men were unloading the cans of petrol and diesel from a truck at motor transport section, the fire broke out, they said. It suddenly spread to the entire section, but the fire tenders and CRPF personnel doused the fire. Officials further said that there were five incidents of fire in Jammu region but there was no loss of life.

Rescuers airlifted but unable to reach AN-32 plane crash site due to bad weather

A 15-member team of rescuers was airlifted on Wednesday close to the crash site of the IAF's AN-32 aircraft in Arunachal Pradesh to look for possible survivors, but difficult terrain and inclement weather hampered their progress. "They are yet to reach the crash site due to inclement weather and terrain. Team will be camping overnight due to difficult terrain and weather, and will close in to the crash site tomorrow," an IAF spokesperson said. The nine personnel from IAF's mountaineering team, four from the Army and two civilian mountaineers were dispatched a day after the wreckage of the aircraft was located by an IAF Mi-17 helicopter at a height of 12,000 ft near Gatte village on the border of Siang and Shi-Yomi districts in Arunachal Pradesh following an eight-day-long, muti-agency search. Rescuers fail to reach aircraft crash site due to inclement weather

The team of rescuers airlifted to a location close to the crash site of an AN-32 aircraft in Arunachal Pradesh to look for possible survivors could not reach the site on Wednesday due to inclement weather and the difficult terrain, a spokesperson of the Indian Air Force (IAF) said. The team comprising IAF and Army personnel and some civil mountaineers will camp overnight and close in on the crash site on Thursday, Shillong-based IAF spokesperson Wing Commander Ratnakar Singh said. The team of rescuers was airlifted to a location close to the crash site on Wednesday to search for possible survivors. Egypt says 14 killed in road accident

Egypt says a car crash has left 14 people dead and 10 others injured in the capital, Cairo. The county's ambulance authority said in a statement the accident took place Wednesday when two microbuses crashed on a highway in the southern suburb of Helwan. The statement says the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. Road accidents are common in Egypt, often the result of badly maintained roads and the poor enforcement of traffic laws. The country's official statistics agency says more than 8,000 road accidents took place in 2018, that left over 3,000 dead, and around 12,000 wounded.

Cyclone 'Vayu': WR cancels 40 trains to coastal Gujarat

The Western Railway has decided to short-terminate or cancel some of its trains passing through areas of Gujarat that are likely to be affected by cyclone 'Vayu'. All WR passenger and mail trains to Veraval, Okha, Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Bhuj and Gandhidham stations will be short-terminated or cancelled from 6 pm on Wednesday till Friday morning, said WR chief spokesperson Ravinder Bhakar. The WR has decided to cancel operation of 40 mainline trains while 28 similar trains will be short-terminated with partial cancellation as a precautionary measure. The WR has also planned to run a special train each from Gandhidham, Bhavnagar Para, Porbandar, Veraval and Okha to evacuate people from those areas. Special trains with six to 10 coaches each will also be kept ready at the nearest safe location to be moved in emergency conditions, the WR said. Social bodies protest toddler's death in borewell, want officials booked

A day after two-year-old Fatehvir Singh was pulled out dead from a 150-foot-deep borewell shaft here, several social organisations Wednesday protested against the state government and the district authorities for the "failed" rescue operation. Flight operations at the Delhi International Airport were suspended for around 35 minutes as a severe dust storm hit the city Wednesday evening, airport officials said. "The dust storm hit the Delhi airport at 6.39 pm today. The last flight arrival at the Delhi airport was at 6.36 pm. The last departure at the airport was at 6.38 pm," the officials said. Cyclone Vayu: Over 3 lakh people evacuated in Gujarat, Diu, says Amit Shah

As Gujarat and Diu are braving to face "very severe" cyclone Vayu, Home Minister Amit Shah Wednesday said authorities have evacuated about 3.1 lakh people living in the low-lying areas and the NDRF has pre-positioned 52 teams for rescue and relief operations. Singh also said the Indian Coast Guard, Navy, Army and the Air Force units have also been put on standby while aircraft and helicopters are carrying out aerial surveillance. "Gujarat has evacuated about 3 lakh people and Diu has evacuated over 10,000 people from low-lying areas to safer places...(the) MHA is in continuous touch with state govts/UT and central agencies. The NDRF has pre-positioned 52 teams equipped with boats, tree-cutters, telecom equipments etc," Shah tweeted. The home minister said cyclone Vayu is expected to cross the Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Union Territory Diu and he "prays for the safety of the people". Mild tremor in Banaskantha district

A mild tremor was felt Wednesday in Banaskantha district of Gujarat, but no loss to life and property was reported. The tremor was recorded at 4:17 pm with its epicentre located 32 km East-North-East from Palanpur in the district, said the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR). Tremors were also felt in the temple town of Ambaji in Banaskantha district, officials said, adding that no loss to life or damage to property was reported. The same region had experienced an earthquake of 4.3 magnitude a week ago.

Cyclone Vayu: Rly cancels 40 trains, short terminates 28 others

The railways has cancelled 40 trains and it will short terminate 28 others due to Cyclone Vayu, the Western Railways said Wednesday. The IMD said Tuesday Vayu has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and it is nearing the Gujarat coast. "Considering the alertness for Cyclone Vayu over Gujarat, the Western Railway has decided to fully cancel operation of 40 mainline trains, while 28 other mainline trains will be short terminated with partial cancellation as a precautionary measure in the cyclone prone areas. Two dead in storm; Flash floods in Baramulla

Heavy rains have led to flash floods in parts of Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir while a storm in Bandipora district left two women dead, officials said Wednesday. There was also fresh snowfall in Sonamarg and other higher reaches of Kashmir on Wednesday. Shareefa Begum, 33, and 18-year-old Mubeena Bano died after a tree fell on them during a storm Tuesday night at Chandaji in Bandipora district, they said.
