The mercury dipped marginally in the national capital due to strong wind activity, the weather office said Friday. The city recorded a high of 40.5 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, and a low of 26.4 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal, a MeT official said. Humidity levels oscillated between 36 and 64 percent, the official said. Strong winds gusting up to 20 kilometers per hour led to a marginal decrease in the temperatures, he said. On Thursday, heat wave conditions prevailed in the city with the maximum temperature touching the 45-degrees Celsius mark at several places. However, a dust storm in the evening brought respite for residents from the scorching heat, with the mercury dropping several notches. On Friday morning, Russia's Pacific Fleet said that the USS Chancellorsville guided-missile cruiser suddenly cut across the course of its Admiral Vinogradov anti-submarine ship, passing in front of it at a distance of just 50 metres (164 feet). The Russian ship had to carry out an emergency manoeuvre to avoid collision, the navy said, adding that it had sent a message of protest to the US cruiser's commanders. Admiral Viktor Kravchenko, Russia's former navy chief of staff, accused the US of "hooliganism" in comments to Interfax news agency. In a later statement, the US seventh fleet attributed the incident to an "unsafe" manoeuvre by the Russian ship, which it said had accelerated from behind to sail within 50 to 100 feet of the Chancellorsville, "putting the safety of her crew and ship at risk." How tides can trigger earthquakes decoded

Scientists Thursday unveiled why there is an uptick in earthquakes during low tides. Years ago, scientists realised that earthquakes along mid-ocean ridges -- underwater mountain ranges at the edges of the tectonic plates -- are linked with the tides. "Everyone was sort of stumped, because according to conventional theory, those earthquakes should occur at high tides," said Christopher Scholz, a seismologist at Columbia University in the US. The study, published in the journal Nature Communications, uncovered the mechanism for this seeming paradox, and it comes down to the magma below the mid-ocean ridges. "It's the magma chamber breathing, expanding and contracting due to the tides, that's making the faults move," said Scholz, who co-led the study along with graduate student Yen Joe Tan. The low tide correlation is surprising because of the way the mid-ocean fault moves. Scholz described the fault as a tilted plane that separates two blocks of earth. During movement, the upper block .
