Lifelong obesity linked to physical difficulties during 50's

According to the latest findings, people who are obese from childhood are more than twice as likely to have difficulty with performing daily tasks such as lifting, climbing stairs and shopping by the time they are 50.The study, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, found that those who became obese in early life had more than double the risk of difficulties with such tasks than those who were never obese.Longer duration of obesity had the most impact on risk, the study found, with those becoming obese in middle age having a smaller increase in risk. For example, men who became obese between the ages of 45 and 50 faced an increase in the risk of about 50%, while for women the risk increase was 78%. The authors suggested this was likely because people who were obese for longer were also more likely to have a higher BMI by the age of 50."The prevalence of obesity at younger ages is increasing. Since obesity in childhood often tracks into adulthood, it is likely that ...

Varying brain energy expenditure in childhood associated with weight gain: Study

It is well known that we tend to put on weight when we consume more calories than we spend. It is, however, less known that our brain uses half of the body's energy during early childhood.Research published in the journal of 'Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences' says that variation in the energy needs of brain development across kids -- in terms of the timing, intensity, and duration of energy use -- can influence patterns of energy expenditure and weight gain."We all know that how much energy our bodies burn is an important influence on weight gain. When kids are five, their brains use almost half of their bodies' energy. And yet, we have no idea how much the brain's energy expenditure varies between kids. This is a huge hole in our understanding of energy expenditure," said Christopher Kuzawa, co-author of the study."A major aim of our paper is to bring attention to this gap in understanding and to encourage researchers to measure the brain's energy use in future studies
