Eight people have been arrested for allegedly selling newborn babies to childless couples, police sources said on Monday. The arrests were made over the last month. The police sources said so far only the couriers, who were involved in delivering the babies, have been arrested and they are looking for others connected with the racket. They said the kingpin of the racket, suspected to be a woman, is yet to be arrested. The racket came to the notice of the Delhi Police Crime Branch last month, following which two police personnel met one of the accused posing as a childless couple, they said. He was arrested after he handed over a newborn baby to the police personnel, they added. A 35-year-old BSP panchayat member from Uttar Pradesh was shot dead allegedly by two unidentified men in southeast Delhi's Batla House Monday, police said. The deceased was identified as Dilshad, who was living in Jogha Bai Extension in Jamia Nagar, they said. Police were informed about the incident at 6.05 pm, following which Dilshad was rushed to Holy Family Hospital where he died during the course of treatment, said Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast). Local enquiry has revealed that two persons, who were wearing helmets and were on foot, fired four rounds at him, he said. Police said a case had been registered and investigation was underway. Dilshad is survived by wife, an eight-year-old daughter, two sons, aged seven years and seven months, respectively. With the arrest of a 23-year-old man, the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Monday claimed to have cracked an alleged case of rape of a minor. The arrested accused is a cousin of the victim, police said. A 19-year-old woman was allegedly raped by four men in front of her male friend in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, the police said Monday. Police have arrested all the accused. The incident occurred near Krishna Nagar village in Chamorshi taluka, around 40 kms from here, on August 29 when the woman and her friend had gone for an outing near Laldongri hills, said Chamorshi police station official Gorakh Gaikwad. The accused stopped the motorcycle, beat her friend and tied him up before dragging the woman to nearby bushes where they raped her, he said. They robbed the man of cash worth Rs 4,000, he said. A special court on Monday gave Vijay Mallya three weeks time to reply to an ED plea seeking that he be declared a fugitive under the newly-introduced Fugitive Economic Offenders Act. Special PMLA judge M S Azmi directed the beleaguered liquor baron, through his counsel, to file his reply on September 24 in response to the application by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED has charged Mallya under the new law in connection with a Rs 9,000 crore alleged bank fraud case and has sought immediate confiscation of assets worth about Rs 12,500 crore belonging to him. The PMLA court had, earlier, issued non-bailable warrants against the businessman in two cases filed by the ED. According to the new law, a fugitive economic offender is any individual against whom warrants for arrest is issued for his involvement in select economic offences involving amount of at least Rs 100 crore or more and has left India so as to avoid criminal prosecution. The Calcutta High Court Monday directed the CID to file a report in a month on the progress of probe into the extortion case against former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh and the alleged involvement of her husband M A V Raju in it. A division bench, comprising justices Joymalyo Bhattacharya and R K Kapoor, directed the CID to file the report on October 1 in connection with a bail prayer moved by Raju, who is in custody for the last 26 days. In a gruesome incident in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district, five members of a family thrashed a man and chopped one of his hands off with a sword, after an argument ensued over his missing cows."The incident happened around 9 pm on Sunday night, when the family of Sattu Yadav attacked the man after he inquired about his missing cows. A fight followed and the family members of Sattu Yadav tied the victim, identified as Prem Narayan Sahu, to a tree and chopped off his right arm with a sword. A city court on Monday granted the custody of arms haul accused Sharad Kalaskar to the CBI for probing his alleged role in the killing of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar. Kalaskar was arrested last month by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in connection with the seizure of arms and ammunition from different parts of the state. A 12-year-old girl inmate of a state-funded shelter home here was hospitalised after she allegedly swallowed glass shards in a bid to commit suicide due to the "torture" inflicted upon her. Hailing from Assam's Kamrup district, the girl was admitted to Sadar hospital by the shelter home staff on Sunday evening after she told them about it, the superintendent of the welfare home Anuja Kumari said.
