In an alleged case of ragging, a class eleven student of a government school here was Tuesday beaten up by his seniors after he complained about it, following which a case was registered, police said. According to the complaint, the boy was "ragged" by the senior students and when he complained about it to a teacher, he was allegedly assaulted, the investigating officer told PTI. An FIR was registered against four boys and investigation was on, police said. The boy was assaulted, leaving him with a broken arm, the complaint forwarded by the school authorities to police alleged.
The CBI has booked noted lawyer Anand Grover and his Mumbai-based voluntary organisation, Lawyers Collective, for alleged violation of rules in receiving foreign aid, officials said on Tuesday. The agency has filed an FIR on the basis of a complaint from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which has alleged several discrepancies in the utilisation of foreign aid received by the group. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked Grover, the president of Lawyers Collective, and unidentified office-bearers of the organisation, besides unidentified officials. A man was arrested for allegedly killing his 60-year-old mother-in-law after hitting her with an iron rod following a heated argument in Rohini area Tuesday, police said. The incident took place when the deceased woman, Ramkali, a domestic help, was going to work. Her son-in-law Rajesh, 44, confronted her about his wife that led to the argument, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) S D Mishra said. Rajesh then hit the woman with the iron rod that was lying on the ground, following which she sustained head injury, he said. A drug smuggling racket was busted here with the arrest of four persons on Tuesday and brown sugar worth Rs 1.5 crore seized from their possession, a police officer said. Acting on a tip-off, a team of officers intercepted a car at Dahapada area near here and recovered brown sugar weighing around 1.6 kg, he said. All four occupants of the car - Sk Maqsood (35), Sk Razu (30), Abusan (28) and Sk Jamsed Ali (53) - have been arrested and another three detained in this connection, the officer said. Sk Maqsood, the leader of the gang, is a resident of Jaleswar area in the district, he said. According to the officer, the gang peddled drugs concealed in fish baskets. After sacking errant income tax officers, the goverment Tuesday dismissed from service 15 senior customs and central excise officials, including one of the rank of principal commissioner, on charges of corruption and bribery. Invoking rule 56(j) of the Fundamental Rules, the government has sacked these Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) officers ranging from the ranks of Principal Commissioner to Assistant Commissioner, some of whom were already under suspension, according to a Finance Ministry order. These officers either had corruption cases registered against them by the CBI or were involved in bribery, extortion and disproportionate assets cases, Finance Ministry sources said. The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday dismissed a CBI plea seeking an urgent hearing in the case relating to former Kolkata Police commissioner Rajeev Kumar's in connection with Saradha Chit Fund scam.The court dismissed the plea saying that the hearing will be held as per the scheduled hearing on July 2 and that there will be no urgent hearing.The court had earlier directed that "no coercive step" be taken against Kumar for a month by the CBI in Saradha chit fund scam case.Kumar, who had earlier headed the West Bengal Police's SIT that probe the case, is accused of tampering with evidence in the multi-crore Saradha scam.
A major terrorist hideout was busted in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, leading to seizure of a huge cache of arms and ammunition, police said. The hideout was unearthed during a joint operation of the Army and police in Gursai area of the district, said Ramesh Kumar Angral, Senior Superintendent of Police, Poonch. Six pistols and an AK assault rifle were seized. Four of the pistols were of Pakistan-make, while two others were made in the US, the officer told PTI. Besides the AK assault rifle and pistols, the other recoveries made include three AK magazines with 90 rounds, 10 pistol magazines, one Chinese grenade and six PIKA rounds, Angral said. He said some Pakistani currency, eatables and clothes, mobile phone with a Pakistan SIM card, a knife and a nail cutter were also recovered. Angral said no one was arrested during the operation. A case has been registered and further investigations are underway, the officer said.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that it will hear in July a plea seeking safety and security of doctors in government hospitals.A vacation bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Surya Kant observed that there was no urgency to hear the public interest litigation (PIL) as the strike by doctors in West Bengal and other states had been called off.Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava, who filed the plea, had on Monday mentioned the matter before the court which had agreed to take it up today. The Maharashtra government will strive to strengthen the Anti-Ragging Act to check harassment of students in academic institutions, a minister said Tuesday. Despite the law already in place, incidents like alleged suicide by junior doctor Payal Tadvi at a hospital here take place, Minister of state for Home Ranjit Patil said in the state Assembly. "We will try to strengthen the Anti-Ragging Act," the minister said in the House. The issue was raised by BJP member Atul Bhatkalkar through a Calling Attention notice. He demanded that the trial of three doctors accused of harassing Tadvi be expedited and that the Indian Penal Code Section 302 (murder) also be invoked against them. A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a driver here, police said Tuesday. The suspect, identified as Ravi Prakash Rai (30), had been arrested, they said. The girl was alone when the accused allegedly took her to an isolated place near Bhagwanpura village around 9 pm on Monday and raped her, police said. According to police, Ravi used to pick labourers from the gate of a labour colony near Bhagwanpur village for a fertiliser factory. He had come to the colony to drop the labourers Monday when he saw the girl and allegedly took her to an isolated place. On hearing the alarm raised by the girl, villagers reached there and handed over the accused to police. The girl is undergoing treatment at a hospital and her condition is stated to be stable. Two people were killed Tuesday when a mound of earth caved in on them at a laterite quarry near here, police said. The deceased Abdul Rahman (48) and Vinu (35) were buried under the mass of mud, which caved in suddenly, they said. "We have registered a case under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code. The case has been registered against the land owner and three persons who runs the quarry. We are looking into the allegations that the quarry was operating illegally," a police official told PTI. Eyewitnesses said the earth caved in due to wet soil. Though they were rushed to the hospital, their lives could not be saved, police said.

CBI has registered a criminal case against a Delhi-based NGO, Lawyers Collective, for alleged violations of the FCRA rules, officials said. They said the FIR names Anand Grover, a trustee and director of the organisation, as an accused. Grover is the husband of noted Supreme Court lawyer Indira Jaising. Unknown officer-bearers and functionaries of the NGO and unknown private persons and public servants have also been made accused in the FIR filed under IPC sections that deal with forgery, cheating and criminal conspiracy.
