Hyderabad: Customs officials seize gold worth Rs 17 lakh, one arrested

Customs officials have seized 538 grams of gold worth Rs 17 lakhs approximately from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport."A passenger arrived at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport from Dubai by flight number AI 952 carrying 720 grams of gold paste in his rectum. After melting the gold paste, 538.090 grams of 24-carat gold has been extracted," the customs officials said on Wednesday.The value of the gold is Rs 17,56,863 in the market. A case has been booked under relevant sections of the law.Further investigation in the matter is underway.

Sister of Saudi crown prince faces Paris trial: legal source

The sister of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is to be put on trial in Paris next month for allegedly ordering her bodyguard to beat up a workman in the French capital, a legal source told AFP on Wednesday. The case against Princess Hassa bint Salman stems from an alleged assault in her apartment on the ultra-expensive Avenue Foch in west Paris in September 2016. The trial is due to be judged on July 9, the source said. The alleged victim has said he was hired to carry out refurbishment work at Princess Hassa's apartment and that she became angry after he took a photograph, accusing him of wanting to sell it to the media. He alleges the princess, said to be in her 40s, then ordered the bodyguard to beat him up. Le Point magazine reported that the princess shouted: "Kill him, the dog, he doesn't deserve to live". 3 held for killing welder, firing at techie in Delhi

Three men were arrested for allegedly killing a 42-year-old welder last month in outer Delhi's Bawana area, police said Wednesday. The police also recovered three pistols, six country-made pistols, 19 live cartridges and one motorcycle from their possession, they added. The accused have been identified as Lakshay Parashar (23) and Nitin Yadav (22), both residents of Bawana and Jatin (19), a resident of Sampla in Haryana, they said. The accused were involved in around a dozen criminal cases registered in Delhi and Haryana. "The police got a tip-off Tuesday evening that some persons involved in several cases of murder, robbery, extortion and arms act would come to Auchandi border near Dariyapur," said Outer-North Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaurav Sharma. Allahabad HC orders state govt to ensure fool proof security in courts

Taking a stern view of the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council Chairperson Darvesh Yadav's murder in Agra court premises, the Allahabad High Court Wednesday directed state government to ensure foolproof security in all court premises in the state. Darvesh Yadav, 38, the first woman chairperson of the UP Bar Council, was allegedly shot dead by her colleague Manish Sharma inside Agra district court premises on Wednesday. "Chief Justice (Govind Mathur of the high court) has taken serious view of the aforesaid incident," said the high court's registrar general in a statement. Woman, her male friend attacked with 'chemical substance' in Vikaspuri

A 19-year-old woman and her male friend were attacked with some "chemical substance" allegedly by unidentified persons when they were on a motorcycle in west Delhi's Vikaspuri area, police said Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday, they said. The victims refused to give any statement after the incident, police said. The man suffered 10 to 15 per cent burn injuries, while the woman discharged after providing first aid, the officer said. Four men were arrested for allegedly killing a person in central Delhi's Karol Bagh area, police said Wednesday. The accused were identified as Akash Kumar (26), Akash (25), Dev Arjun (24) and Mahesh Kumar, they said. Acid attacker's conviction upheld by HC, but spared the noose

The Bombay High Court Wednesday upheld the conviction of a 25-year-old man in the 2013 Preeti Rathi acid attack and murder case here, but commuted his death penalty to life imprisonment saying the trial court erred as he was a young boy and there was no past criminal record. A division bench of justices B P Dharmadhikari and P D Naik partly allowed the appeal filed by the convict, Ankur Panwar, challenging the death penalty awarded to him in 2016 by a special court in the sensational case which was an outcome of jealously and rejection. It was the first instance of death penalty being awarded by a court in the country in a case of acid attack. "The conviction under section 302 (murder) and 326 (b) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid) is upheld. The death sentence is commuted to life imprisonment," the bench said. Woman arrested for pick-pocketing in Delhi metro

A 50-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly robbing female passe ngers in Delhi metro trains and railway stations in the city, police said Wednesday. The woman, a resident of Jahangirpuri, was nabbed from the Karol Bagh metro station on June 10, they said. She used keep a close watch on women passengers at platforms and queues in metro stations. MP minor's rape,murder: Accused sent to judicial custody for another day

A special court here Wednesday extended by a day the judicial custody of a man arrested on the charges of raping and killing an eight-year-old girl. Vishnu Bamora, 35, was produced before special POCSO court judge Kumudini Patel, special public prosecutor Sudha Vijay Singh Bhadoriya said. After the prosecution filed a charge sheet against him in the court Wednesday, Bamora admitted that he had raped and killed the girl living next door last week. He also told the court that he had committed the crime under the influence of liquor. "Bamora told the special court judge to hang him while admitting his crime of raping and smothering the minor on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday when we presented the charge sheet against him," Bhadoriya told PTI. HC directive to TN govt on traffic violations

The Madras High Court Wednesday directed the Tamil Nadu government to issue orders for empowering police officers above sub-inspector rank to impose spot fines and compound offences committed by motorists. A division bench comprising justices S Manikumar and Subramonium Prasad issued the directive while hearing a petition filed by K K Rajendran, seeking to implement the compulsory helmet rule both for rider and pillion. It recorded the steps taken by the police and the transport department for violation of the motor vehicle rules. In view of the increase of traffic by 150 per cent, the government within a week should exercise the powers conferred under sub-section (1) of section 200 of the Motor Vehicles Act and issue appropriate orders empowering all officers not below the rank of SIs to discharge the duties of the sub-inspector of Traffic Police.
