Samsung Electronics reported Wednesday a sharp increase in consolidated revenue for the first quarter thanks to strong sales of its new smartphones, but its semiconductor business suffered a setback. The South Korean semiconductor and smartphone giant said in a statement that it posted 79.14 trillion won ($56 billion) in consolidated revenue for the January-March quarter, calling it an all-time quarterly high. It said its operating profit rose to 6.7 trillion won ($4.7 billion), up from 6.61 trillion won ($4.6 billion) in the same period last year. Samsung attributed the results to strong sales of its flagship Galaxy S25 smartphone and other high-value-added products. However, the operating profit of the company's semiconductor business fell to 1.1 trillion won ($774 million) from 1.91 trillion won ($1.3 billion) in the corresponding quarter last year. The company said its profits were squeezed by falling average sale prices, as well as reduced demand for high-bandwidth memory as .

Government proposal to reduce import duty on several components as well as exemption of capital goods will reduce cost of indigenous mobile manufacturing but consumers are unlikely to get a major relief, according to an industry body. India Cellular and Electronics Association Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said that the removal of 2.5 per cent duty on mobile parts was a "nuisance" tariff which was not doing any value addition in the mobile phone manufacturing ecosystem. "The government has removed the 2.5 per cent import duty across the board. In terms of cost, it is not very significant. It will help the industry save 0.09-0.1 per cent. Overall measures announced in the budget will boost competitiveness in the Indian mobile manufacturing space which is good for attracting investments and enhancing exports," Mohindroo said. Mobile phone players want Indian airports to ramp up their existing cargo handling capacity to support a projected eight-fold increase in device exports to USD 180 billion by 2030, industry body ICEA said. India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo told PTI that the turnaround time at customs is a major hurdle for the electronics industry which delays shipments' processing further. "In China, while the factory to export take-off from the cargo terminal is achieved on Day 1, in India, the export take off happens only by Day 2. This is a glaring chasm especially when seen in the context of the volume of exports which in the case of China is more than 30 times electronics output (USD 959 billion) compared to India (USD 29 billion) in 2023," Mohindroo said. Electronics is already India's largest export in air cargo while it's ranked third overall behind engineering and petrol. "To keep pace with the expected growth in exports, concerted efforts are need

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has shown interest in mobile irradiators developed by India which can be used to prolong the shelf-life of food products, a top official said on Tuesday. An India-made mobile irradiator was demonstrated at the IAEA office in Vienna last month, said Department of Atomic Energy secretary A K Mohanty at an event here. "The IAEA is interested. If India or BRIT (Board for Radiation and Isotope Technology, a wing under the DAE) can make more (mobile irradiators), the IAEA can install them in other countries. The Director General of IAEA has written that he will be visiting (India) and if we can give him a few samples, the IAEA will put these in other countries which they need more," he said. Irradiators are useful for prolonging the shelf-life of food products and minimising crop loss, Mohanty said, adding that the technology would be especially useful in countries like Ghana where ginger is a cash crop (and needs preservation).
