LS polls: Mehbooba concedes defeat from Anantnag

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti conceded defeat on Thursday in the election to the Anantnag Lok Sabha seat after trailing in the third place, behind the National Conference's (NC) Hasnain Masoodi, who has taken a lead of 7,600 votes over Jammu and Kashmir Congress president G A Mir. Masoodi, a retired high court judge, was leading Mir by 7,600 votes with 18,000 votes to be counted, election officials said. Mehbooba, who had won the Anantnag seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, was at the third spot, 11,700 votes behind Masoodi. "I've been fortunate to get the love & affection of my people. BJP leads on 10 seats in Chhattisgarh

The BJP is maintaining a lead on the 10 out of total 11 Lok Sabha seats in Chhattisgarh while the Congress is leading only in Bastar (ST) constituency, as per the trends available so far. Three out of the four Uttar Pradesh cabinet ministers fielded by the BJP are leading, according to the Election Commission trends. S P Singh Baghel, Rita Bahuguna Joshi and Satyadev Pachauri are leading over their rivals from their respective seats, while Mukut Bihari Verma are trailing in the latest round of counting. LS polls: NCP regrets Cong's performance; BJP leaders laud Modi's leadership

With election trends suggesting the NDA making huge gains, UPA ally Nationalist Congress Party Thursday conceded defeat of the alliance in the Lok Sabha polls, saying "unfortunately" the Congress' performance was not up to the mark. Saffron party leaders have attributed the performance to the "leadership" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah, and termed it "historic". The BJP, on its own, is leading in over 290 seats, while its main rival Congress is ahead in 52 of the 542 Lok Sabha constituencies that went to polls across the country. NDPP wins Aonglenden bypoll in Nagaland

NDPP's Sharingain Longkumer Thursday won the bypoll to the Aonglenden Assembly seat in Nagaland's Mokokchung district by 6,245 votes, officials said. Sharingain polled 8,607 votes, while his nearest candidate Alemjongshi, of the Congress, got 2,362 votes. Total 10,589 votes were cast, Chief Electoral Officer Abhijit Sinha said. The bypoll was necessitated following the death of sitting NDPP MLA Imtikumzuk last September. The elections were held on April 11 along with the first phase of Lok Sabha polls. Aonglenden has a total of 12,436 voters, including 6,146 male and 6,290 female. With Sharingain's win, NDPP has 20 members in the Assembly, BJP has 12, JD(U) 1 and Independent 1.
